You cannot base your whole belief system on a movie, espeically a Tom Cruise one.
I'll find a website that speaks about the weapon, but as far as I know (I have weilded one in real-life) they are generally single-handed.

From this information we can infer that they used only one hand for the katana. The picture on that site also displays this. http://japanesesamuraiswords.com/ also states that they used a long sword (katana) and a short sword at the same time.(Edited to make the links work)Message Edited by Vshbaa on 03-27-2004 04:03 PM

The movie The Last Samurai was fairly accurate about the history of Japan, and the social structure that existed. Infact, much of the movie was spent on doing research for this movie. The research was so detailed, that the armor itself was crafted by hand and in the same fasion as that of in the past. Quite a bit of detail.
As far as the sword holding, etc, I can't comment too much on that because I simply have not done the research to fully know everything. As far as the two sites that you posted, there are a few problems. The first site is basically a sales site. I did look at some of the articles and found the same problem as the 2nd site that you posted. Both sites lack sources. This may seem not important, but whenever posting information about a subject it's important to do research - even if you know about the subject. Because both of these sites lack any sources what so ever, I dont' classify them as even credible. Until a source is posted that is written correctly in the classical style of papers, I would find it hard to believe anything on the sites that were posted.
To be honest, I haven't read anything on the sites, just checked to see if they are credible...if they were, I would read it - since they are not really credible as far as I'm concerned, I can do my own research if/when I become interested enough to do it.

I agree. I was just trying to make a point, next time I'll check credibility ![]()
If I get a chance I'll find something to prove it, but I'm pretty sure it was a dual weilded weapon.
here here for the the Cryo Mace. Great Idea.
Like the Zankantou also
what onlymaestro is right. katana is a sword aka. weapon. swordsmanship or swordsman style/school. there it's that simple.
now how a katana is used is normally 2 handed because of the weight, but it can be used one handed with a different style.
