Thread: Powerhammers are pretty useless
Before you get all riled up, here are my numbers.
I am a master weaponsmith. I made 2-h curved swords and powerhammers with very similar materials. After a 30% damage slice on both, here are the stats:
2-h Curved: 78 - 306 2.7, 31/64/36 +6 +6 +6
Powerhammer: 170 - 610 5.4 116/37/25 -37 -37 -37
So, assuming mob with same resist on kinetic and blast, The 2-h Curved is 71.1 DPS, 11/24/14 ham DPS
The powerhammer is 72.2 DPS, 22/7/5 ham DPS
So essentially the same DPS, with almost negligible lower ham on the power hammer.
Added to the fact that
1) Speed won't cap for special moves even at master for the 2-h sword (75% reduction)
2) Huge delay on the hammer means deaths due to heals not landing in time
3) ******* -43 hitting mod at all ranges means that the hammer misses 40% more. ******
NO ONE IN THEIR RIGHT MINDshould be using the power hammer vs. a non-kinetic resistant mob.
DO NOT BE FOOLED by huge hits. what's the point of hitting for 4k every15 seconds when you can deliver the same damage in half the time using a 2-h curved. The hammer is pretty useless in PvE and only limited use in PvP.
DEVELOPERS please fix the huge negative modifiers on the hammer/
Every 1.0 seconds? I don't see how that's possible.
Speed is +75 at master swords and +80 with master brawler.
If a hammer is speed sliced below 5.0 seconds, AND you're not using specials, you can get to 1.0.
But who doesn't use specials?
The 2-h Sword speed at master swords w/o master brawler with a special move is 2.7 * 2 * 25% = 1.1, still not at the cap. With a speed powerup, maybe.
So we have a hammer that's only marginally useful at master level with speed powerups? And this is supposed to be the swordsman's primary weapon?
I agree with Lilea. As much as I hate to admit it, we only really have one useful weapon in our current arsenal, and despite the fact that I'm sick beyond belief of using it, it really is the only viable option.
The hammer, unless its a heavy kinetic resistant mob with little or no blast resist, will always fall behind on damage dealt in a given ammount of time. The only other thing the hammer is useful for is applying some nasty bleeds. The higher the damage value you score when you hit with a bleed attack, the more damage each tick will do.
It would be a completely different story, not only with the hammer vs the curved sword, but with every weapon we can get (vibro and 2h axes, cleaver) if the curved sword hadn't errorously (we never did hear if that was intentionnal or not...) inherited of a medium armor piercing rating. If that is ever changed (fixed?), THEN, and only then, will the -31 range mod on the hammer at all distances be an acceptable factor.
Until then, the power hammer is only useful for two things: landing powerful bleeds, and killing kinetic-resistant critters.
Rancor teeth. Then see how useless that PH is. You would get those same stats(or close to it) without being sliced. Get it sliced for speed and you got yourself a nice hammer there. Although it would probably just even them out considering hit/miss rate and HAM costs.
But if i buy a couple crates of WUK's and since i'm a doc i can buff myself, i could do extensively more damage.
I don't think rancor teeth will help the powerhammer, because you can just put it on the 2-h sword and get an even more awesome sword.
I mean, it's really sad. People hit for 3k with a PH and they think OMG!! And use it exclusively and gimp themselves for the rest of their career.
Not if the 2h curved sword was sliced for speed. Dont forget, rancor teeth also adjust range modifiers. So it will hit more often, and just as fast as the 2h curved. Or **edit** close to it.
I really beleive the speed caps are fubared. i'm at only novice heavy swordsman, and my 2h curved is 2.6 speed. Without specials i swing at maybe 1.2. With specials i swing at about 2.0.
Saying the PH is useless is silly. You have to take things into account like the HAM costs. The Cleaver and especially the Curved use waaaaay too much mind. Even just looking at health/action usage, the PH is still the most HAM efficient due to its high damage. As you get higher into the swordsman tree, I tend to believe that HAM efficiency quickly surpasses sheer DPS in importance. Also, in a lot of situations just using standard swings with no specials is the best bet (not all, but some).
Finally, don't forget the front loading effect of the Power Hammer. Sure, that Curved may be technically higher DPS, but if you kill someone in two hits it never has time to catch up with the Power Hammers first big hit.
When I got to master I immediately switched to hammer. My hammer has range mods of -29 and with my +105 to accuracy I never miss.
I love that it uses my health because as a wookie I have higher const and strength than I do action.
Mine runs at 3.5 and swings at half that with mind hit 3.
Things you can only do with a power hammer: Hit a nightsister sentry for 10k damge.
Also, I can bleed for in the thousands, 2 hit anyone besides a brawler in PvP. This doesn't just mean prone people or those with rifles, I mean anyone without melee defense.
I won't really go back since I got hooked.
Is the sword AR 2?
The Powe rHammer sure is.
Remember, it's a 50% increase/decrease in damage per AR level.
So, you'd have 71.X DPS against a mob thats AR2. However, against a mob that's AR1, you have 106dps.
Against something thats AR0, you have 159dps.
AR is very powerful, don't discount it

25%. A mob like the AT-ST has AR3 which is a 75% decrease.
