Here is the PRECISE steps I use to solo elders (non-speedcapped Master swords/Master doc):
1. Pull out powerhammer . . .
2. Approach group so to come closest to elder first . . .
3. Draw elder away . . .
4. Pound away, heal self, clear states . . . for about 10 mins.
5. Watch my health and/or mind stats start to go down. . .
6. Get up off my back after kd . . .
7. Oh, remember that I forgot to keep intimidate on her . .
8. Apply intimidate . . . several times.
9. Shoot! Look at that mind and health . . .
10. Pop muon . . . heal self . . .
11. Get up off my back . . . fall back down - too dizzy
12. spam stand/heal dizzy over and over . .
13. Whew, finally standing again.
14. SHOOT! look at that mind and health again
15. remember I have to clear action queue first . .
16. Clear action queue . .. heal self . . .heal dizzy again
17. Mind is critically low . . .
18. Think about running away. . .
19. Elder down to about 50% mind . . .
20. Can barely see the slice of blue on my mind bar . . . think about what to do as I'm staring up at the sky . . . KD again
21. Try to stand up again . . .
22. Dead
23. Lay there as a rotting corpse, looking up at the lovely lady as she taunts me and dances around. . .
24. Clone . . . go back to science outpost . .. mind buff, self-buff . . .
25. Rinse, repeat.
There you go . . . enjoy!

PS - I did actually get an elder once . . . but the above is an abbreviated version of what usually happens. Of course, when I finally killed the elder, only got a lance with standard dot. I usually just go after spell weavers/protectors/sentinels. Better cost/reward ratio for me.

Yeah, don't take my comments as saying elders aren't worth it - it all depends on what you are after. From everything I've read, you mostly get the same rate of lousy loot drops from elders as you get from other NS types. However, I do believe you have a greater chance of getting an exceptional item such as a premium crystal, outstanding weapon, etc from elders. So, if you are looking for the truly exceptional, and are speedcapped, then elders are the way to go.
However, I am just looking to make a constant stream of credits to support my various habits. In the past 2 weeks or so, I have looted 14 clear crystals, a bandolier and a clothing attachment. These have sold for a total of over 17 million (and I gave away two other clear crystals to friends).
I know not everyone buys my approach, but it takes ME a very long time to solo an elder. This is on top of the time it takes to find an elder spawn - with the crowds lately, this is no easy matter. However, even if the stronghold is camped, I can always find several spawns of spell weavers/protectors/sentinals. No matter what your speed, you can take out a boatload of these lesser NS in the same time it takes you to kill a single elder. I actually prefer spell weavers and sentinels over protectors as they die much quicker and yield comparable loot.
This strategy is especially nice when you have nights like last night - no one at the stronghold, just lots of red dots. Run to entrance, kill a few sentries and sentinals. Kill NS/rancors milling about yard, go to first cluster of buildings, kill 7-10 or so initiates/spellweavers, go to next cluster, kill same, go to other entrance and kill protectors/sentinals/sentries, go around to other side and do the same. In 15-20 mins or so, probably got 40-50 kills spamming area hit 3. In that time, looted 3 clear crystals, 1 gold crystal (lighter color than the yellows I've gotten in past), a clothing attachment, a bunch of lances/LVAs (most junk, some decent), a few treasure maps (Yea for the CDEFs!) and several locked containers. All in all, not a bad night. To each his own, I guess!

I killed an observer outside the mountain squill cave. Lots of warcry2. Used the warcry, burst run ploy when I had to break out a need stimpack from the crate lol. U need to time it so ur not dizzied or stuned.
Master Swords +12 fs +1 tape/Master Brawler/novice medic/CH 4044. Warcry was the only reason i didnt get too badly hurt to heal, with 300 stims.
Atm the time I was only 80 melee speed. Intimidate2, warcry2, mind bleed 1+2, headhit3, and try a lunge2. Ill try a area3 next time for a dizzy state. I've got some spare hotkeys now, which I'll fill with taunt and Ill use a clear combat queue for ctrl.
However I got some decent loot.Tusken observer mask with 3 skill mods around +15. Shame I cant wear it.

I have done that guide many times even though its annoying when you die you feel good coming back and killing the NS Elder and getting no loot

I designed a template specifically for N.S. Hunting and other high-end PVE.
I'm M. Swords/TKM/Medic 4040/Scout 4020/Combat Prowess 0004. I use 40 med use Stim E packs. The toughest battle is an Elder with a Stun Baton, as I only havea Stun Helmet lol.
But soloing an Elder isn't my best achievement with this toon. That would have to be fighting 5 N.S. Stalkers at once and coming out on top.
