Your son has the right idea! 
I'm master fencer + master swordsman and I can tank till the cows come home! Just make sure he's got plenty of brandy and canape to keep his mind up. He might also want to master brawler, you get intimidate 2 which lasts a lot longer than intimidate 1 and it's really helpful since itcuts amob's damage in half. Oh, and lunge 2 is great as well since neither fencer nor swordsman get kd.
