Thread: Defenses??

My son is making a Master Swordsman, but he wanted to add in some better defenses from Fencer. Will that work or will he need to have a 1 handed weapon weilded to take advantage of the defenses of Fencer?

Common defenses stack regardless of weapon in hand. Only things like dodge, counter-attack, block etc... require certain weapons to be held. So things like melee defense, ranged defense, defense vs ....(a big variety) will stack.

2 questions


1) are you sure? I thought they changed this or maybe put a cap on it. For example if I was TKM and Fencer 4/0/0/0 then my melee Defense is +131 and Ranged Defense is +114. Is that really what I'm going to end up with? Cause that sounds damn nigh invulnerable and I thought they changed things to prevent that.


2) How about melee Damage mitigation? If I get melee damage mitigation 2 on two different trees, would those stack?

they stack but all cap at 125, forget fencer id get some pistolier lol, have you ever tried to kd a pistolier its nigh impossible even when i was a tka

you are hard capped at +125 for all defenses and weapon-specific mods such as block and counter-attack.

any foods, clothing, attachments, SL bonuses, anything.... can add a MAX of +25 addt'l, making the final cap +150.

damage mitigations stack on each other from the same profession, but does not stack with others.

you can get melee damage mitigation 1, 2, and 3 from the same profession. that puts you at melee damage mitigation 3 for everything, and you can not stack anything further.

oh and i was sick of hearing all sorts of stuff about caps, so i asked a GCW Correspondant a few weeks back:

"I was informed ALL defense stat skill mods are hard capped at 125, not counting Skill enhancing attachments, BE clothing, or say Squad leader bonuses bestowed upon the group which could push the values past 125."

there you have it. out of all ive heard, my money is on this.

oh and now that i think about it, i guess im not 100% positive on the "extended" cap being limited to only +25...
hmmmmmmmmmm

OK,I "think" I understand. If I do then I'd have to say the plan my son and I had, to compensate for low defenses of the Swordsman with Fencer defenses, is... well ... wrong?


That dodge ability is only given when a Fencer weapon is weilded. So, the Counterattack of Swordsman and the Dodge of Fencer are NOT active at the same time...reguardless of weapon weilded?


What defense skills ARE dependent on the weapon weilded between the Fencer and Swordsman?


Im a BH ... my son wants to beour Tank ( hence Swordsman ). We're looking to set him up as a strong tank for our duo. He has his Heart set on helping me fight Black Sun NPC's, and he likes the look of Swordsman. Any suggestions are welcome.

block, counterattack, and dodge

block is only used when a polearm is equipped
counterattack is only used when a 2H sword is used
dodge is only used when a 1H sword is used.

there are of course ranged counterparts that also utilize the aforementioned mods, one per profession.

Defenses that do stack, are: Melee Defense,Ranged Defense and all of the ones that say Defense Vs ........


There are probably others also, but I haven't really looked at the rest.
