Link.
The combat upgrade testing is nigh! In a few weeks apparently.
The former combat balance/rebalance is now being called the combat upgrade and will involve a closed beta phase that is open to more than just the sandbox team. You still have "several weeks" at the very least but do go get signed up so we can have as much Swordsmen representation as possible. I believe that the standard beta restrictions apply (probably have to be at least 18 and I'm not sure if there is anything else for that phase).
I guess the "combat docs" will not be available until we're further in to things (which is too bad as I think you guys will be happy with what you see and I'd like to get feedback). I'll let you know more about that when there's more to tell.
Gabe.

Cos looked to the west as the sun set behind the purple mountains of northern Dantooine. The shape of a distant Star Destroyer caught his eye. Today had been a good day, his hammer had gathered several new notches. As he finished cleaning the weapon a smile cracked his lips. Tomorrow would be a good day too, perhaps better than today had been.
---
I hope everyone is as excited as I, SWG has a bright future to be sure.

This will defenently not be an "Upgrade". Players are too amazingly good right now. The devs already tried to make Elders, Dark Jedi and Krayts untoutchable. They failed. Players are smart, and the devs don't seem to grasp that. Players will figure out a way to work the system. Back in the day, it was a graul mauler and a Krayt FWG5. Now it is a 80-90% suit of armor, amazing doc buffs and food, and a devoted template.
Here is how i envision the process going:
Realistic Dev: Shouldn't we make the crafting process a little more limited so that armor and weapons don't get too good?
All the other Devs: Why, they will use average resources, and if good resources do spawn, they won't collect enough of them to balance out the crappy resources. Rare resources will stay rare.
Realistic Dev: Don't you think players will horde the good resources and try to make Uber items?
All the other Devs: Here is your pink slip. Players will be to star struck by the starwarsyness to worry about collecting and hording good resources and loots. When will you have time to do that between visiting OB1's house, and saving faction points to get storm trooper armor? Storm trooper armor is so good that armorsmiths will probably go out of buiseness. Larry, why don't you up the base on advanced composite a little?
The devs have been consistently out of toutch with the players and their abilities and methods. If you have hope invested in the combat rebalance, i hope you can deal with disapointment well. If you can't, you might want to remove all sharp objects and rope from your house.

It's an upgrade, not in the sense that the player becomes better, but in the sense that the game becomes more fun and challenging overall.

I have very little confidence. So far the devs have not been able to put out a publish without screwing something up, and they seem to have a severe blind spot to bugs and things not working properly.
Examples:
Remember when armor didn't work for a couple of days?
Remember when mobs stoped droping loot (yesterday)
Remember crafting day, when experimentation got screwed up, and amazing schematics could be made?
Remember vendors deleted all of our items, and they were returned in bags?
Remember when some crazy thing or another happened with the bags where you would be unable to shuttle (don't recall the exact problem, i just remember that they needed to give people teleport tickets that would get them off the planet)
The devs have been very, very slow to fix things that are not on the front burner.
Examples:
Multi target shot, point blank area2, disarming shot (you can't tell me that 2x damage to lairs is a fix), and pistolwhip2 have not worked at all, or shortly after launch
Anyone looted any rifle crawl speed SEA's lately? Honestly, how hard can the loot tables be to edit?
Carbineer has several attacks that do nothing (not a carbineer, so i dont know them off the top of my head)
Factory time was nerfed in publish 11, while a bug that makes the hopper half fill then stop still remains
Squad leader...ummm...does that profession even do anything besides occupy skill points?
Injury treatment speed only effects the speed you heal other's damage, not your own.
BE code was "fixed" so that rediculous level 10 pets could be made
Despite repeated attempts by the devs, i can still pull my level 10 60% kenetic resist 10k/8k/6k gurcat (Nerf-Me)
The health version of brandy is unexperimental because it requires resources that have no PE (bone and something else)
The Powerup/Slice Exploit just barely got fixed
The borgle cave is heavily camped because the devs can't a) randomize the drop time and b) randomize other POI's so that they are worth visiting
FRS is poorly conceived, and leads to jedi kill squads that deter non jedi pvp
(its fun to gank jedi

but it sucks to be overt and ganked by4 jedi yourself

)
Basically, i have very low hopes for the "Upgrade." I think upgrade is the same as nerf, and all it will produce is the need for more patience and hotfixes.

Riflemen were once able to crawl faster than normal in the prone position. The devs decided to get rid of the rifle crawl speed. +100 rifle crawl speed gets you nothing. When you go over 50 negotiation, you crawl faster now. Even though rifle speed was purposely taken out of the game, the devs did not take 5 mins to remove the skill from the loot tables. I know a guy who quit the game because he looted a +25 cammo/+20 polearm speedAA off a night sister elder. He was soooo pissed when he found out that he would need a +26 cammo AA to be able to get the +20 polearm speed to stick. The funny thing is, cammo actually works, though it doen't do much. He probably would have gone Unabomber style on SOE if he would have looted a +25 grenade experimentation or something equaly crappy like that.
