I ran into two elite novatroopers and one of their commanders yesterday. They were spread apart by about 90m, so I figured I would try one of the novatroopers on. He was in the middle of a river and swimming but could still shoot, so I ran from him, and moved onto the elite novatrooper commander. Now, following the cardinal rule of swords I tried to get this commander to drop from ranged to melee, but try as I might he would not.
He too ended up on the river, so I burst ran from him to try the third elite novatrooper. I drew this guy away from the river, then turned him around so that when he retreated he would be running away from the river. Again, I tried to get him to drop to a melee attack, but he would not. He would retreat to 14m from me, drop to a knee, shoot again, when I had him in range again, he would get up, run 14m away and shoot. I had him intimidated and bleeding, but I could not land a lunge2 on him. This process went on for about ten or fifteen minutes before he finally died.
Anybody have any suggestions for getting these guys to drop to a melee attack? Do they ever even drop to a melee attack?

They don't ever drop to melee, they're like the ones on the Corvette - armed always with a rifle/carbine.

The novatroopers will never drop to melee. The best way to beat them is with a set of energy armor and keep them intimidated. Same principle applies to soloing AT-STs, energy armor cuts their attacks down to around 250 a hit instead of the 500+ with standard kinetic armor.
good luck.
good luck.

I was having the sneaking suspicion that they would not drop to melee, thanks for the replies, they confirmed it for me. Has anyone had any luck looting these things? I thought I saw somewhere they drop nothing.

Is there a way to get them to hold still? They'd be an easy kill for me if they'd stop running around madly. THe only time one held still was when I had a rifleman friend start shooting at him before I attacked.

whats the rebel equivalent of these guys? Imps seem to be getting no love when it comes to factional loot drops. I ran circles around Tyrena and Kor Vella and the best mod I pulled all day was a Carbine Acc 11...on a 68 max damage carbine G_G

I have had several troopers run up on me and shoot me at point blank range, but they never sit still, always running circles around me and at burst run type speed. They never have dropped anything either, 1k of credits. On a similar note has anyone ever run into the black and blue dark troopers? I saw one on endor with about 250k of HAM

I have follow target on my toolbar for situations like these... if I can get the lunge in, I will, but they tend to run 15m, kneel, I get in several hits, they stand, run 15m... rinse, repeat.

The blue super-butch looking evil troopers are immune to Intimidate, so if you're planning on taking them on be damn careful!

Yeah I noticed that about the blue supertroopers....I thought I read somewhere they are actually robots, so in that case I guess they would be like the SBDs and immune to intimidate.

Not exactly sure how much ham the novatroopers have but rebel commodores sound like this. They don't drop to melee, strong damage, lots of ham, and good loot. I looted a +20 food experimentation belt and a +17 carbine speed bando off of them in one buff session. I found them at a rebel base(pve or pvp I'm not sure). And also, rebel ensigns drop decent attachments, up to +12 is what I have found off of them, and commandants dropped me a +15. But good luck with that with the new patch, there areinsane rebel npcs that are immune to intimidate spawning at some of those bases.
