Thread: Hammer's: Speed vs. Power and Slicing.

I've been using a damage sliced Power Hammer for about a month and a half, I really love it. That being said I am wondering if I would be better off going for a Hammer with a speed slice instead. Being that they seem to do great damage from base stats would I be doing more damage cumulative?

My other question is where can I find some good sliced weapons? Ive been searching Corellia, Naboo and Tatooine (On Ahazi) and have had piss poor luck finding places with good or ANY stock at all.

I look forward to hearing some advice and gettting WP's.

Have you tried buying them and then finding a Smuggler to slice them for you instead?

I've used both speed and damage sliced hammers. If you are a master and have some speed SEAs, you would be better off going with a damage sliced hammer. If you're not master or have no SEAs, speed may be a better option and use some powerups with a damage mod.

It all depends on whether you want to hit more often or hit harder with each hit. If I get a 25% damage slice, my average damage goes up 25%. If, instead, I get a speed slice, I hit for my average damage 25% more often. So over a given time frame whether I hit for 25% more average damage or hit for my average damage 25% more often, either way I am doing 25% more damage. Thus, it becomes a matter of preference.

The only caveat to that rule is that, once I hit the speed cap, no matter how much faster my weapon is, I will still hit no faster than 1 hit per second. Thus, at or near the speed cap, damage slices become more important.

The average unsliced PH comes in at around 5.4 speed. Even with a 35% speed slice and a 33% speed power up, the best I can get that wepon's speed to is about 3.0 seconds. At Master Swordsman with a personal speed mod of 75, I do not speed cap with our longest delay special (2.5x delay) until I get a weapon speed of around 1.6. Thus, you can safely assume that, at just Master Swordsman, I will never hit the speed cap with a PH for our longest delay special, and I can always choose which I like more, hitting harder or hitting faster.

As mentioned, if you have speed tapes and armor attachments, you can boost your speed. You will need about 18 in speed enhancements for Master Swordman to cap with a Power Hammer. That is, for a 5.4 weapon, you need about 93 as your personal speed mod.

For other weapons, you can cap with a 2.5 speed weapon at about 85 in personal speed mods, and a Master Swordman/Master Brawler, with its 80 to speed, will cap with a 2.0 speed weapon.

To figure out what weapon speed you need to cap with, use the following formula:

ws = 1 / (specialdelay *((100 - personalspeedmod) * 0.01))

As I said, our longest special is 2.5x and Master Swordsman is a personal speed mod of 75, so:

ws = 1 / (2.5 *((100 - 75) * 0.01)) = 1 / (2.5 * .25) = 1 / .625 = 1.6

So a Master Swordsman needs a 1.6 second weapon to speed cap using any special we have.

For a normal attack, substitute 1 for the 2.5:

ws = 1 / (2.5 *((100 - 75) * 0.01)) = 1 / (1 * ..25) = 1 / .25 = 4

So a Master Swordsman can normal attack at the speed cap with a 4.0 second weapon.

I hope this helps.

You need to get yourself up to around speed 95. I actually have 105 at the moment.

Try and get some Two-Handed speed tapes m8y.

I'm 0/3/2/2 and my 2 Handed Melee speed is +50 right now. I guess that doesnt cut it? Also I made an error in the damage of my Hammer, its 171-582 5.3 speed. So perhaps I could get some more advice now that Ive given more accurate details on my character.

Thanx

I always go for damage. You do about the same amount of dmg with a speed or dmg slice if you aren't speed capped, but the big difference is in HAM cost and Decay rate. I'm already eating through weapons as is, using powerups every now and then I wasted a Scythe in 3days of Geno hunting. From my experiance as a TKA, speed isn't always great. The HAM cost are insane if you're spamming specials. As a Zab, all mind stats maxed with 2 brandies I still take a little bit of mind damage using a hammer at 25Mind cost. I can't spam specials with my Scythe unless I have a musician buff or rest every now and then.

So I say Damage all the way. Its just better to keep your weapons around longer and better on the HAM.

most smugglers aren't that bad... though I have heard tales of smugglers keeping things when someone tried to scam them for a free slice...

Its all about trust I guess, but its a common occurrence (at least on my server), and I'm sure 99.x% of the time most people are honest. You get a slice they get paid. If you are worried try getting a recommendation from someone you know, or test them out with a cheaper weapon first.

your 596 hammer is a decent damage slice, ~27%

I suggest emailing Anja (her shop is near Coronet) and asking her torestockher sliced wpn. vendor. That's where I have been getting most of my hammers lately (not to mention a couple really nice high dmg sliced axes)

Thanx for the advice, I will contact her tonight.

What about the speed factor? Has anyone had experience with both? Which do you find is more effective, speed or damage on a Hammer? I was also thinking about going the Cleaver route but never see any good ones sliced or unsliced...

I have a 470 damage 3.0 speed hammer that I bought at a vendor pre-sliced(don't know how he managed 3.0 speed though) and I find that because of the high negative range modifiers on them that I would usually rather use that hammer then one of my 600+ damage 5.4 speed hammers - the faster I swing the more times I get a chance to hit is the way I look at it. Besides, when I do hit, the damage on speed sliced hammers are still pretty high considering that the base is usually 470 and all hammers have medium AP which equates to around 2-3000 damage hits on your normal creature in the wilds.
