Is it true that you only need chestplate, helmet, pants, and gloves? Not full sets of armor? If so, then what do the other pieces do?

It depends on what you're fighting... as a master swordsman you hardly need armor at all for a lot of mid level things. The arm peices do not get hit as much as the others do but they still definitely do a lot to protect your health pool... im a lizard so I don't know about gloves or boots.

Its Chestplate, Helmet, Boots and Gloves.
The standard 4-piece suit.
I dont know if its intended this way, but the uncovered parts just dont get hit.
If you additionally wear legs and the armpieces the usual 4 pieces wont decay as fast as they do when you only
wear 4 pieces. The damage to the armor is devided among the pieces you wear.
But generally, Chest, Helmet, Boots and Gloves are enough to be fully protected.

oh really? Ive fought a buddy when he had no arm peices on, and occasionally I would nail huge health hits on him.

only in PvP you seem to not be in need of the arm pieces...in PvE you´ll get killed when not wearing them. But in PvP people tend to wear skirts(Style rulet
) or bio engenered pants without the arm pieces and just do fine.

Same here, Iam wearing 4-piece suits in PvE (NS Elders and such)as well as in PvP and I dont have problems. No armor holes.
But it seems to be a little buggy, depending on the things you wear on the uncovered parts.
For example, if I wear the 4-piece suit, and I am wearnig a Two-tone formal skirt on the legs, this
skirt is generating an armor hole on Action armor.
If I switch the skirt with casual pants, everything is fine.
Iam wearing only the 4-pieces mainly due to the cause that Iam a Zabrak. So Iam stuck with my Focus on 500
and I cant tune it higher through stat migration. The encumbrance from the armpieces and legs is simply
too high for me to swing a Scythe at the speed cap.

What do you mean by the skirt is generating an armor hole? I assumed it meant a certain stat wasn't being protected but then you mentioned casual pants and you lost me.
Also a possibly terribly n00b question but I hadn't heard anything about stats affecting swordsman speed, how do stats factor into reaching the speed cap? First I 've heard of it.

"oh really? Ive fought a buddy when he had no arm peices on, and occasionally I would nail huge health hits on him."
Was he a pikeman? With pikeman, arm pieces are a MUST, when I was pikeman twice I needed a full upper body armor set and had to go through a new set every 5-6 days. Not sure of what other combat professions are in need of more armor than just gloves, chest, helmet and boots- but pikeman definately needs the arm pieces.

I tried a friend's toon last week, she wears skirts with the armor and I went to fight Jantas and noticed the composite boots weren't resisting until I switched to paramilitary pants then the boots started working.

Yea its wierd. If Iam wearing chest, gloves, boots and helmet together with the skirt, and I am fighting an enemy,
SOME hits that target the Action pool get through. Maybe each 4th or 5th hit goes throughmy defense untouched.
But if Iam wearing something else on the legs, like the mentioned casual pants or camos, Iam fully protected with 4 pieces again.
I assume this is a bug.
On your second question, maybe I explained something wrong there...
Stats dont affect your speed. But weapons have HAM costs when you do specials having them equipped.
I am swinging my Scythe at the speed cap, which means I get hit by those HAM costs once every second.
Due to me being a Zabrak, I have a very low Focus stat, which I cant do nothing about. So if I would wear
a full composite armor, even with Focus food, the encumbrance of the armor on my Focus stat is so high
that the special costs of the Scythe (every second) pump my Mind bar empty WAY too fast.

Ah, got it. Being Doshan my mind ain't that great either, but I'm prevented from wearing the gloves and boots so comp chestplate, helmet and pants is all I use and I can wear them unbuffed, so the Brandy and Ahrisa just go to protecting my mind. Of course if I'm in a situation that calls for comp armor, then you can bet I'm buffed and guzzling the brandy anyhow, otherwise I'm better off attacking stuff in my skivvies.
