Thread: Just me, or is SL pretty much Useless post-CU?

I remember pre-CU we LOVED having an SL with us. Easy for them to do their specials. We were always in Burst Run mode, and etc...but now everything has a 'cast time' and a long cooldown...and drains your stats. And isn't all that useful. Sad to see such a nice profession wasted.

i made the joke recently on my guild's forums that SL is possibly the profession that is now the most broken. the joke was that half of us are convinced we're borked while the other half still isnt sure. (btw, the response that came back was "so there 8 of you? 4 to a side?") personally, i was in the second group; i really thought that some of our stuff didnt work period.

while taking advantage of the bonus xp the other night i tried running some of our specials to test them out. Rally wouldshow an icon under our HAM bars, and while i didnt compute the numbers, it did seem as if i were dealing more damage. Steady Aim also showed an icon and seemed to produce more damage. a couple of players were blinded and Form Up removed the blind icon. Volley fire paints the target for everyone to see which guy i want them to hit, the only problem here is it pulls agro onto me. Boost Morale even worked to remove one guys 200 points of wounds (i dont think anyone else noticed *whew*)

the only thing i havent verified is the addition of the passive mods, but i do know they show up in my skills window. so now, i'm starting to come around to think we're not as messed up as we were when CU first launched. at least we got somenice weapons out of it!

Well, we're definately not useless. the group I've been fighting with has greatly appreciated my presence. The passive bonuses, unlike pre-CU, are actually very noticable. As are /rally and /volleyfire's benefits.

Perhaps instead of saying we're useless, we should be focusing on the fact that we're not as useful as we should/can be.

I agree, post CU we are more useful but still far away from being where we need to.

At first, I was pretty disappointed with how we ended up post-CU. Sure, FormUp is no longer useful, and Retreat can't be spammed like before. But VolleyFire is nice and actually requires we act with some leadership, picking out important targets and making sure our group is aware of the volley. And Rally isn't so bad either, and does make a difference over its 30 second timer. Our Mobility and Leadership lines are still sorely lacking... but we aren't completely useless.

The size of the Volley Fire effect scales with the size of the target you're using it on. Try it on a Krayt Ancient... it'll be larger than your screen!

I'm finding the new SL system les than I want, but it does have some use. First IYmy intimidator pistol and my e5 carbine. I'm liking /volleyfire and rally is sometimes cool. I'm holding onto MSL becaus eI believe it has lots of potential and can still play a role (while gimped) in an effective group. But without my MBH 0440 Cabs I wouldn't be nearly as effective.

My advice for anyone getting it, is master somethign else first and then come back to MSL second. I wish it wasn't that way, but those are the breaks ATM.

I concur that Squad Leader is still far from where it needs to be, but it's not nearly as broke as it could be. While I dig the Intimidator and E5, I find that my new Proton Carbine and converted FWG5 out-DPS both of them - and DPS seems to be the name of the game in the CU. Our TN still works fine, as do the passive defense bonuses. As far as group specials go, we seem to have traded the mind-buffed looping macro-utility of Steady Aim and Retreatfor thenew functionality ofRally and Volley Fire's target painting ability, so I'll call that a wash. Boost Morale seems as useful as it ever was.

The actual combat effectiveness of the Squad Leader is still largely tied to whatever other ranged combat profession(s) round out the template. This is by design and is favorable, IMHO - even though I'm not jazzed about marrying us to Pistol XP. On the other hand, I've been a Master for quite some time. Still, we desperately need some distinct form of profession-defining Squad Leader XP. Much workremains, but wedo serve a purpose at the center of a well-rounded group - and I won't be giving up Master Squad Leader for quite some time.

I just got some SL skills last night, I tried using volleyfire, but noticed nothing.....do the other group members see the "painting" of the target, and not I?

You should see it also.. it'll be a very large, very faint 3d red crosshair, one of the many new particle effects. It'll float around the target's head, providing a damage & accuracy bonus to your entire group.

Of course, you have to be Group Leader for it to work.

Hello all! I have been a Ranger for a while, and TKM pre-CU. I changed over to pikes when I could not "Tank" with TK, and then found out that Pikes didn't work for me either. I then played with a character builder and decided that I would try SL and see how it meshed with Ranger. I honestly think I have found my comfort zone with Master Ranger/Master SL. I tested this the first time by, after spending a few moments on the FAQs, grouping with some Jedi who were grinding. I bought an E5 Carbine, since I also have the basic Carbine tree, and proceeded to Dant where this group was. Having never done this before I wasn't sure how well it would go, but not long after I was given the lead one of the Jedi said he loved the SL bonuses. I continued to ask the group what they liked the most and the replies were "just give us what you got!" So I did, rally then volley the steadyaim for accuracy.

So as for being useless, I don't quite see it, but I am still new to SL. I do know that I will not be changing anytime soon, as now I can bring alot more to groups than just a harvest bonus. I can also do a pretty fair amount of damage with my newest E5 a guildmate made for me at 400ish DPS and approx 966 max dmg. While I don't have many specials to 'spam' I think I should be able to hold my own.

Welcome to the ranks. Glad to see somebody find the bright side of being a Squad Leader all on their own.

I agree...

SL is useless.

Post-CD, all professians on their own are useless. MRM, MP, Mcarb... To have one of them doesn't give you that great of defense, accuracy, speed or even specials. With everything being versatile you almost need to double master.

Any Master ranged professian will benefit from MSL, that is given. But more beneficial would be to get MBH or just another master ranged professian. SL is, imo, a third choice.

My template is MBH/MP/0404 SL... SL comes third. And a good substitue for that SL would be 0440 Carbineer which would get me more useful specials AND more accuracy. But I am prefering to stick with the extra defense, though I notice little difference, and the extra 15 speed.
