I disagree, I think Squad Leaders are more useful now than pre-cu.

The main difference is that pre-cu there were certain mobs and enemies that absoultely *needed* a squad leader to take on. A Gorax for example, was damn hard without a SL to remove Dizzy every 5th second.

Still, with everyone beeing overpowered before the cu, there really weren't any need for the puny bonuses a SL gave. Who needed +25 Ranged Defence when you were a walking God to begin with? Who needed Volley Fire when you already killed anything in 5 shots?

After the CU though... mobs are actually more dangerous now so those defence bonuses come in a bit more handy.

Volley Fire now lets the entire group do 15% more damage on all their shot for a bunch of seconds.

PLUS: we ourselves finally got something that make US better, for all the sacrifices and troubles we do for out group. We got +45 ranged and melee defence. I love that.

Also, the very hand /retreat is still there, and we are loved for it. I can't remember how many times I used it when our group was down in the Mythrii Caves and needed to run back up and down.

/retreat is a rip off.

I used that once when grouped with an animal thinking it will let ME get away but no... It sapped me of all my HAM leaving me to die while my "group" gets to get away. Excuse me? I ain't dying for no one!

If you want to run use burstrun

As a SL you are responsible for your Squad.

Maybe MBH is a better place for you? A LEADER shouldn't run away ahead of his group, and say every man for himself.

Besides the description of /retreat says "the Squad Leader sacrifices himself for the good of the team" (or somethin like that...will edit when I get home) So just by taking the box that gives this skill you are saying, "I will fight until my squad gets away or die trying!" So I would suggest either not taking it, (so you can say no when asked if you have retreat...) or as first stated go to the profession where its every BH for himself...

I agree with the fact that a SL is about leading a squad and doing what is best for the squad rather than the captain... But that is all just a fantasy in how it should be.

I agree for one, that SL is more useful now than it was pre-CD... Pre-CD there was no groups so SL was pointless. Now there is grouping so SL has some value to a group. But a great enough value to really take it on as a master? I don't think so. Maybe for some, but for me it doesn't.

However, the fact is SL doesn't give enough benefits to be looked at as it is supposed to be. Neither does BH, Smuggler, Ranger. SL doesn't do enough to make it worth getting for the pure reason of being a leader in a group, or at least no master. Ranger doesn't do anything at all really. Ranger sounds nice and plays an important role in other MMORPGs, but in SWG it's basically useless. Ranger has become less and less useful since launch, the only real benefit to MR is the camps which are impressive to newbs. Otherwise it's like SL.

Smugglers don't really smuggle. People get Smuggler for the specials or for the slicing ability. Just as how people get SL for defenses, accuracy/speed mods and/or specials. They don't get it to lead a squad. Though with Smuggler, imo, it became less useful post-CD. All the specials seem to do the same thing. I tried several templates with MS and all were useless to me.

And BH... People got BH pre-CD to make either Carbineer or Pistoleer worth while. People now get BH for the specials, mods and defense.... Not because they are going to be hunting a bounty. The only real bounty BHs get are Jedi which makes BH more as it should be than Ranger, Smuggler and SL but still. And to get those JEdi bountys one only needs inv 3 rather than Master.

Agreed.

The whole idea of being a squad leader is to improve the performance of the group you are leading. Squad leader isn't about becoming a morel33t k1ller yourself. But we all agree on that I think.

I tried Master SL for a while but have to say it dropped a few boxes in favour of more BH skills. I'm 0/4/4/4 squad leader now, which I think is pretty good. I get the personal bonuses from the 2nd tree, and give my group bonuses from the 3rd and 4th. I didn't feel my group was in big need of more terrain negotiation since most fights are pretty much stand in one spot anyway (doing mostly PvE).

The Intimidator is imho the meanest looking pistol in the game, and I'd love to have one, but it's not *that* good. Being a master rifleman I use an advanced laser rifle instead.

I guess many proffessions lack the final shutzpah at the master box to really make it worth while. Still, I don't think that is to much of an issue. Noone is forcing anyone to spend skillpoints to get the master box. After the CU we are all encouraged to pick and choose this skill and that from various proffessions.

It all comes down to play-style and what you want to do in the game I suppose. I like to hunt in a group, so giving my buddies advantages and help while dishing out heavy damage being a rifleman suits me. If you want to do one-on-one PvP then I'm sure other alternatives are better. The list goes on...

I'm happy with SL. Surprisingly, I've narrowed down my tool bars to 3 rows instead of all 6. Though I may add another one for SL macros and now that I'm running a guild during a friend's inablity to get permission (don't ask) to play, I may add another one, top row for guild and bottom row for city.

Anyways, I have seen myself and a friend kill a level 81 creature 2m from where it was originally standing due to my MSL stats. So I say that SL is not useless, just nobody understands our abilities, they probably only see the Group Terrain Negotiation or when they hear Volley Fire, they think area attack. Which are two of the complaints I had with my old guild.

Maybe the majority of the players don't. I did.

I had some SL prior to the CU, but I didn't bother mastering it. However, after the CU, I have found myself leading most groups, so why not make the most of SL? I haven't mastered it yet. I still need 200k combat xp (like a fool I wasted a lot of the combat xp on Paemos), but I will master it.

Last weekend, my guild went on a base raid. I had to take my BE (we couldn't find another to slice the base) so I had to leave my SL behind. Not having /sysgroupshowed just how difficult it is to coordinate attacks in a large group.

I have a feeling that my template of choice may not be a favored one by the general community (Master Smuggler, SL 4-4-4-4, Medic 0-2-0-0). But I seem to be holding my own. I originally only chose SL for the armor type after the CU. But after playing for a whilewith this particular set of skills I am really starting to appreciate the squad leaders abilities. Of course if any of you should know of a way to make this even better let me know, just keep in mind MS is my chosen profession. I am still fairly new to the game so any advice post CU would be welcomed.
