Thread: What is up with Squad Leader?

Squad Leader doesn't make sense at all. I was a Squad Leader a long time ago when the profession had basicly no purpose and it was just noted as a waste of skill points. Sure they gave group defense bonuses but on the combat side there was nothing. Now the CU and RotW comes out and Squad Leader now has some defense adding to it which is pretty cool but now I am competely blown away because at Master Squad Leader the Squad Leader gets some of the best weapons in the game. What?! Okay wait hold on... they get the DawnSorrow Rifle, the E5 Carbine, the Intimidator Pistol, and another pistol at Squad Leader Ofense III known as the Tchotchee Pistol, the Bounty Hunter varient of the Flare Pistol (Which makes no sense at all because its description says that it was first used by some hip Bounty Hunter from Talus yet it is a Master Squad Leader cert) . Those are all the weapons that I know about and there might very well be more, but a Squad Leader has no use with these weapons -they have no skills or abilities and I dont even think they give skill mods for ranged weaponry (but I could be wrong) But still why give Squad Leader, a profession that has no real combat value instead of just enhancing the group's performance makes no sense. These weapons sould be a cert for a ranged prossion and I don't think that Squad Leader is considered a ranged profession.

Aside from the following group enhancements:

  • Group Burst Run Efficiency +60

  • Group Terrain Negotiation +60

  • Group Melee Defense +30

  • Group Ranged Defense +30

  • Steady Aim (Bonus +10)

  • Volley Fire (Bonus +10)

  • Rally

  • Boost Morale

  • Retreat

  • Form Up

The Master Squad Leader also gets these "solo" benefits (at thebare minimum):

  • General Ranged Accuracy +60

  • General Ranged Speed +20

  • Melee Defense +65

  • Ranged Defense +80

Along with the Dive Shot, Roll Shot, Kip Up Shotand Overcharge Shot specials from the Ranged Support IV pre-requisite branch. We can also wear Mandalorian armor, and we pull the overload switch to blow up GCW bases. Not bad for "no real combat value" - especially if stacked with any other ranged profession. Probably even good enough to justify a couple wicked new weapon certs.

It requires millions of pistol xp and hundreds of thousands of combat xp. Like it or not, SL is now a honest to goodness ranged profession.

It seems you are a little off with your mods Darth... these are the "solo" mods for a Master Squad Leader:

  • General Ranged Accuracy +30

  • General Ranged Speed +15

  • Melee Defense +55

  • Ranged Defense +55

This was taken from the CU combat calculator on Bloodfin.org

The mods above cleary do not make a very effective ranged profession. This is all the Squad Leader gets.. not much. And why do they have some of the best weapons in the game?

Before someone said oh so you want the Squad Leader profession nerfed? No I don't want it nerfed, I want it to be better. Right now they havetriedto imake it intoa ranged profession and it is a bad ranged profession. A Squad Leader gets some of the rarest and most powerful weapons in the galaxy yet their limited mods and abilites reduce their overall potential. I really think a Squad Leader should have some of his own ranged abilites and his mods should be enhanced.

It should look more like this:

  • General Ranged Accuracy +60

  • General Ranged Speed +20

  • Melee Defense +60

  • Ranged Defense +60

  • Carbine Defense +20

  • Carbine Speed +15

  • Pistol Defense +20

  • Pistol Speed +15

  • Rifle Defense +20

  • Rifle Speed +15

I mean those mods fit a Squad Leader more and they would actually be able to put their weapons to use and if a Squad Leader had some of their own uniqe ranged abilites then we could actually call it a "ranged profession".

Kodan's ProfCalc for the CU is broken. Your numbers were generated from selecting Master Squad Leader without taking into account that Novice Squad Leader also requires Marksman Ranged Support IV. When you add in the pre-reqs you get my higher numbers.

HEY!!! Interior decorating ISN'T knitting mailboxhead! It is knowing which artwork belongs where, how to angle a couch for optimal Feng Shui and knowing what an accent wall is. I suggest you learn a little about it befor you mock it!!!

Absolutely none of those weapons are particularly uber. Some can be crafted amazing, but on the other hand I spent 3 mil to get a crafted E-5 that beat my crafted MkII carbine. The intimidator I have is horrible for ham cost and does nothing but restrict my range. I have a large amount of skill points soaked up into a profession that is group oriented so I can be of benifit to them. In doing so I restrict my template options and limit my skill spread. My pre-req, along with every other ranged fighter includes RANGED SUPPORT.

I fail to see the purpose of this thread.

SL has always required Ranged IV. Post CU it still did but now that so many profs require range IV the box wasn't displaying that you needed it for SL. They fixedthe displayand had a patch note about it around 2 weeks ago now.
