Impressions from afresh squad leader on the block....

Ive been debating on whether or not going Squad Leader would be a good choice after hearing all the grief from people in this forum. I decided to go through with it, and very happy for doing so!

First of all, this is a selfless profession. It doesnt make anyone a battle god. In fact it gives you hardly any hard stat benefits at all. This profession gives your character actual responsibility andrewards by respect among peers, things that are not measured as some silly Leadership +10 skill. You become the strategist for the party, you know where to go, how to get out of a jam, and how to approach a situation. For group less than 5, the need for one isnt very clear. For groups of 10, 20, 30...PA hunting parties... expeditions... You are a godsend!

As signal to noise ratio increases in Groupchat, Spatial, Guildchat, and Instant Messages... the group's ability to communicate is diminished. You need to know what everyones situation is. Who is being attacked? Who needs immediate support? Where can your group fall back to? You need to make calls during battle and your commands need to be clear and prompt. A Squad Leader's best friend is /sysgroup and CTRL-M map overlay!

This is a Squad Leader, not some spam commanding grunt.

Any additional skill bonus or ability in the SL skill tree is just icing on the cake.

By the way, my other profession is Riflemen. I pity the foo who tries to be SL while being a melee fighter

That's all well and good, but give us abilities that we can use to help the group. As it is now, I help my group more by dealing out raw damage with my pistol and pets. They gave us skills to do so, but they are useless or not worth the mind cost. All you said in your post is that you like leading groups. Good for you, but the profession itself still sucks.

Luke Gameplayer: No. It can't be. That's not true. That's impossible! Darth DEVer: Search your feelings Luke... you know them to be true. Luke Gameplayer: NOOoooo!

You do realize of course that all those wonderful things you mention here have absolutely nothing to do with any of the skills we get? They come from your qualities as a real life human being. What I and many others want to see are benefits to choosing this profession that give us some of that respect but not because we're nice people but because we're powerful.

Well now that droids can permadie along with faction pets SL have just become the most gimped fighting class in the entire game. we could get CH but then that would take away from our weapon. being a rifleman/squad leader isa hardcombo of fighting prof's to try and solo with espessially without the Master Marksman bonus. Not only that but SL/CH's cant use there abilties anyways.

I have been trying to come up with what would be fair. i would say scrap terrian negotiation altogether and let us have one pet per skill box and each pet would have a rank such a pvt. cpl. sgt. anda bonus for having all 3 grouped with u at the same time for the 4th.Or allow faction pets to not be permakilled when owned by SL's or allow us to have them while covert. A SL should be on the side of a faction anyways.

Squad Leader should not be dependant on other players. It should simply give you more SL points then Pet's would.

well everyone been crying about SL XP with petswhich should be the last thing adressed .which means we'll be nerfed and gimped some more before anything cool is added.

We Squad Leaders are caught in a vicious cycle: we don't get any attention from the devs because theres no one playing our profession hardly, and no one wants to spend skill points on a broken profession so they dont pick it up.

Well I guess I can sort of understand where your coming from... Though I really rely on my Riflemen profession for the combat abilities.

I am seeing this profession in a totally different perspective then some of you guys.

I do love the idea of having a squad with faction pets as suggested, itsa neat idea that will probably never happen. Id be happy if my faction rank was displayable to people. Myself included! lol

The comment about anyone being able to lead a group by their human personality alone ignores the need for/sysgroup in a large group.

If the profession needs more skill boosting abilities to make it worthwhile to people, I think it should come in the form of group bonuses including HAM cost reductions for reduced fatigue, increased healing effectiveness, an enhanced volleyfire or damage multiplier perhaps.

These are realistic things to ask for I think. Anything beyond that seems to be really pushing it in my opinion.

Well, I am a new Squad Leader fresh from the Commando fiasco. I see I didn't chose vry wisely this time either. Heh heh.

I am doing this mainly for my PA. I haven't experienced any of the problems yet but I do notice that we have few directly useful skills.

amen shueset, ugly ugly world, it is. That is what makes us special though. The only thing people can call us for being squad leaders is dedicated or retarded. I believe sincerely that one day they will make the squad leaders better. That one day could be distant but i am dedicated to the class.

Aubeck, just out of curiosity, are you a tech controler or in wide band? Your comment on "signal to noise ratio" just reminded me of work. That, and I find the thought of another tech controller running around as a squad leader on this game amusing.

Howdo you keep the faith that this profession is going to be fixed? I'm sick and tired of being a gimp, all my bounty hunter and creature handler friends can go out and kill to their hearts content in PvP while I'm stuck plucking away with my pea shooter and futilely spamming /rally.

I'm losing faith, the only thing that keeps me going is the hope that our failure rate will decrease, we will get some sort of faction perk bonus, and our special abilities will be made more powreful. I'm tired of being a sacrificial lamb.
