Thread: Why isn't SL a MELEE Profession?

When was the last time you ever saw a battle scene when the leader/general/commander/king takes his men out to war with a Gun or a Bow?? Leaders grab their sword and go into battle!

Squad Leader needs to be a MELEE based profession. The game is already FULL of elite ranged professions.

DELETE :: Marksman 0004 SL requirement

REPLACE with :: Brawler 4000 orMedic0040

and while you're at it...

remove Multipult Squad Leaders ina group.

I can name multiple movies/situations where the Leader has guns and not swords. Usually the sword ones seem to be in movies that are situated before guns. Most that are based after guns were made, I usually see the hero/leader with a gun.

Back in the pre-CU days of the "defense stacker" I always thought that MSL combined nicely with Pistoleer/Fencertemplates as sort of a Naploeanic-era officer or something like that.

I could see the fencer line (0400) of brawler fitting SL as a better requirement then Brawler 4000. If there was a Melee Support Line that would be a better fit.

Uh... wish it would be friday.... *sigh*

Alas, this can't really be a serious question, right? I mean, oki, thinking it over, yes... now i understand why there is always one guy with a sword and in platemail in all the movies about the second world war, vietnam and all the likes. Also this brings a completely new light on the Star Wars movies. I always thought it would have made sense if the guys, when being captured in ANH and being boarded by stormtroopers would have used carbines or something to defend themselves, instead of charging with swords and maces. But with this knowledge, my view is completely changed. I never realized these things before, but thanks for enlightening me.

Or, uh, could it perhaps be that the thesis is somewhat flawed by only watching movies from times where the bow orcrossbow was the king of ranged combat?

Meh. Besides in Ep 4-6 you didn't see any, but then again, the only time Squad Leader was even mentioned was on the assault on the first DS. Even in Ep 1-3, the only "swords" you saw were lightsabers. With SW, I wouldn't want to be using a sword. No matter how good I was with it, I'd get blasted a thousand times with a blaster at any great distance.

The Current requirements are the most fair I can imagine.

If you want to go Melee you still can go melee with your second profession. Nobody is forcing you to go ranged . Its only a little bit more expensive on skillpoints.

I was one time looking at a MTKM /MSL variant because Im sooooo bored of my Wok on my head. Usefull in the field? Yes it certainly is, never leave home with a Wok, but stylish, no way.

I choosed MTKM because I would be able to fight in "my regular outfit", having inate armore but, I couldnt let go of my MCarb.

Maybe on a different server I would try it out.

And regarding different opinions, yepp everybody has one .

I'm not sure on specifics, but I am pretty sure officers..at least in the American military...have not taken swords into battle in a hundred years.Heck in the 1860s, even when the sword was more common for an officer and worn by most, it was certainly on the way out as the pistol became far more reliable in combat. I'm sure that by the 1880s, the sword, while still worn, was more decoration at that point and the rifle and pistol being more commonly used.

No, the SL of SW is without a doubt much more likley to carry a gun.

Hmm i say a stormtrooper SL or a alliance commando SL should prob use a gun, but how abotu a gungan SL, Nikto SL or gamorean SL.

Star wars got alot of diffrent cultures and some of them still prefere melee weapons over guns. Gungans in EP1 is good exemple with there electropikes and gamoreans in EP6 with there axes is another good exemple.

But the culture or group doesnt need to be primintive to prefere melee weapons, Emperors guard with there pieks is good exemple and so are Greivious body guards with there pikes.

So it may not be to far fetched to make SL open easy for both melee and ranged.

But what do i know i am just a stupid BH that wish the SLs some love in a nice remap, good luck with the upcomming remap guys.

Fein out

Even those pimitive races had ranged weapons.

The gungan battle? The initial wave was an exchange of ranged attacks between lasers and blue balls as gungans used launchers and sling shots to throw them. When the battle was about to engage in close quaters, the order to retreat was given. Certainly, the ranged wepaon triumped and the gungans realized the errors of their ways...as they use ranged weapons in the game now.

Very few Gamorians are seen, and pointing out a couple using pikes...when Lando was as well in the same building, is a bit shortsighted. Gamorians are able to usedranged weapons. The pikes/axes were more for looks.

Even the Ewoks had Bows and threw rocks.

As for the Emperor's guards, Those guys were elite stormtroopers trained in all weapons, the pike was a traditional weapon carried by them for show. They were far more deadly with arifle or carbine. Most of them were not Squad Leaders either.

anyway...have you seen any gungan, gamorian or ewok Squad Leaders in this game?

I don't think any of us here would say thatSquad Leadershould not be allowed to use a melee weapon. The idea put forward is that all SL should be melee, and that I don't agree with. Perhaps the question could be "Why isn't SL an open weapon cert profession?" Well, the answer even then is easy...balance.
