Thread: To be or not to be squad leader...
Don't!
When I am leading a squad, one of the most frustrating things is seeing another SL show up. It's such a pain in the ass. The less squad leaders the better, because it means more xp for me.
Plus, we really don't want Imp SLs, due to the fact that a good squad leader makes ten fight like twenty, especially after the proposed changes come out.
Please, don't.
It's pretty bad when all of us are telling people not to be squad leaders. I'm gonna be upset when I surrender all my squad leader skills and start in on Ranger.
Bah.
I want to say yes, but I don't know if this guy wants to lead people or wants to have things in game that would seemingly aid in leading people.
If you want to lead, be a Squad Leader. You can lead regardless of what abilities or sparklies you are given.
I am going to pick Squad Leader up as soon as I log in tonight.
I am currently a Ranger/Pistoleer/Creature Handler. I also have Novice Medic and Artisan. I have ZERO skill points right now, but I am going to drop Novice Medic to pick up Squad Leader, with the eventual dropping of Creature Handler.
I am reading a lot in this specific forum, and I realize that I will play yet another busted profession, so hey!How bad could it be? I hunt a lot on the harder planets, and I truly think there is where the benefit lies. If I can solo Bols on Dantooine, and have the ability to instruct a group on how to take down really tough mombs, why not?
It will be cool enough to use the sysgroup command to instruct everyone on when and how to effextively use /suppression and /warningshot in combat, as well as which specials to use and when. Especially when fighting something like Crystal Snakes on Yavin IV.
Is it really that bad? Is it really that useless? I know people have been able to acquire XP in it, and some haven't. What's the best size group? I am usually in 4 to 8 person groups, not including pets. We take down some good stuff, so I think that alone should serve me well. Right?
I'm sorry. I actually laughed.
Giving up novice medic for Novice squad leader would be the worst decision you ever made. You can duplicate /sys with regular chat modes and that is all you get at novice. If you take one skill box after that then take mobility I. That does help your group a little bit.
If you are serious about doing this then your SL xp is bases on group size. The larger the group the more xp you get. Its based on your personal xp also so the more damage you do, the more weapon xp you get, the more SL xp you get.
My suggestion: Don't do it!

So if on average I hunt in 5 PC groups, this may not be worth it? I just wanted to try it out. I mean, what's the worst that happens? They are only skill points. If I realize SL isn't what it's cracked up to be after a few weeks, I can simply drop SL and pick Novice Medic back up. I just thought it would be fun.
I see your point though, and appreciate the advice. It would seem I would have to find the best group every time out to get anything satisfactory, and as we all know, there are glory-seekers, killhogs and harvest hogs in every group. Not to mention those folks who don't have /maskscent (not like that works anyway) and have them lead us all into a big group of aggro reds (let's say... Voritor Lizards?).. and then say "oops" when the group perishes..
Hmm.. Maybe I need to re-think this.
Here is the truth, squad leader may very well be the most worthless gimp class ever created for any game. There is nothing much more to the title than the title right now.
HOWEVER if you have a ton of skill points you dont need right now, spend the combat points and jump into SL. It's not going to hurt you if you have the points. The exp SL uses is an extra exp that doesnt apply to any other class, you just have to be leading. Not so hard just ask to lead the group.
If you are running tight on skill points and this class is still a gimp class with no future than just surrender the skill points, the only exp you lost was worthless Squad Experience. This is what Im doing right now, Im advancing ina few career fields until I get tight on skill points. Then I make the decisicon based on DEV comments and what has already been done, whether I will surrender SL.
The decision to become a SL, can be decisive for the proposed changes. As we all know, the Devs are just looking at sheets, charts and numbers. The more people become SL now, the more likely theDevs will think, that the changes they proposed are accepted by those people. And that these changes get more people in the SL profession.
Ikeep my Novice SL (could train it right now) pending right now, tillican see where the journey goes.
So if you are against the proposed changes, it could be, imho, the wrong step training Novice SL right now. If you support the changes, it would be wise to train it now.
