Squad Leader Archive
Thread: Volley Fire Use
Hello fellow SL's. I have an idea. For the crazy amout of unhealable mind drain and extensive skill points to get to SL, why not get the devs to make this class do something besides bestore explore I on your squad. Just a thought. I don't want a super hero class, just one that I want to keep instead of surrender the skills to get, well anything that works. Being basically taken out of the fight due to mind drains is beat but if it was worth it, say like being a doctor, it may warrent the amout of skill points needed, even just to get to SL let alone climb up the ladder. I was so excited for steady aim, bah. No problem volley fire will rock bah! Is there an up side other than skill surrender is instant and free?
Dissapointed and incapped due to mind drain

In regards to mind drain: 1) The SL cannot be treated like the rest of the group. If you fight, and have a little medic skill, you're useless as a squad leader with the current HAM costs. The DEVs are treating the SL's special moves as if they were a weapon. Sure if they worked all the time. But SL's are more of a support class. If you have let's say a carbineer/medic/squad leader/CH (that's me, /shurg) In the middle of a huge fight My carb drains my mind HAM's, problem already since that class's HAM's need fixing, then my buddy here flops over with an aggro about to DB him so I run over to apply a stim, luckily he lives, but now there's 4 more aggros so I rally the group, it fails, so I do it again (still firing away with my carb) this time it works yay!. A dwarf nuna sneaks up on me a nips my butt, I'm dead. Hurrah! for Squad Leader! Yeah you know what you may not like it, but what I'm saying is that there should be little or no HAM cost for Squad Leader Special Abilities. Why? Because we're still hunters/soldiers and there's plenty of things reducing our HAMs already. unless you find a way to make mind stimpacks (hey pets get'em) lay off us. We're screwed as it is already. Squad Leaders are a walking bonus that's what should make us appealing to groups. Yes we can make your group better, not become another liability. What good is your squad leader against a PvP group of Riflemen? Try it, it's fun. Try boosting the HAMs of SL not reducing them.
hi, i just got SL a few days ago. So far i got 1/1/0/1. I have several things i do to try to help my squad. As of now (this will change due to skill point limits) i am a pistoleer, medic, scout, squad leader, and creature handler. alot of professions i know. but my stratigy goes a little like this (provided the peeps i am leading know how to hunt)
1) i id the target to the group
2) pets first (there are always pets)
3) if i havent rallied the squad yet i give up (sad but true)
4) then everyone finds there own target
5) i watch the medic and the mob, i have the medic watch the fighters HAM's. thats there job
6) if anything gets close i cant handle, i either stop it by sending in a pet or pulling it away from the medic
7) if all else fails (medic dies or incapped or not avalible) i heal what i can and replace them till they are good to get back and fight
Now like i said i am a new SL so some of these tactics my seem bad or something, but thats what i got down so far. works pretty good. if you can give me any tips i'm all ears. i dont have volley fire yet but i fell like it should be used to quickly eliminate a big threat right away. it is a hybrid profession 3 lvl skill, if it only does a single shot i am very disappointed. i dont think i should have control of the squad, i dont need that (like i said provided they can hunt
) but it was said earlier in this forum some screw up or most importantly, don't have the interest of the squad first. a 'squad' is meant to complete a task efficently. you can do this with ease of comunication (thats why they carry walkie talkies, lol). i guess the point i am trying to make is it is very hard to take a group and make them a 'squad' with the tools given. i am sticking with it becuase it fits my character and its fun sometimes. hopefully something in the future will come and help us out. take this for what its worth, just my 2 creds
*cough cough*... Dictatorships are based on military control. Use Military to get rid of Dictatorships ? I'd say get rid of military and you'll get rid of the other, too
In XvT it's that easy: select your target, press CTRL-A and your squad will be prompted with your request to target your chosen target. If you want to do it, you press spacebar and there you go, you've got a new target. Without a switch back which I think makes no sense. What sentient creature would follow the order to attack a target with just one shot, only to then switch back to his previous one ? You either follow the order or not.
This command would not mean to control other players, IMHO. It would just help cooperation. If your group was connected on a program like TeamSpeak you wouldn't even need it, but since this can't always happen, there must be something like that... to simulate an order that needs a fast reaction... sometimes you don't have time to type it. In a RPG, in a party, there must be cooperation. If you don't want to cooperate, then you shouldn't group. And anyhow, as it is now, this ability is already really controlling another's player charachter. Every time I hit the Volley Fire button, I make all chars in my group do what I want. Which I think has little to do with roleplay and cooperation. So the objections I've read in this thread make really little to no sense to me.
Ahh, an idealist, how refreshing.
In SWG Factions are Military Ranks. You can use faction points to buy Military Structures or Combatants. Your objective is often to blow up the enemy or kill its soldiers. It is the Galactic Cold War. Lucas obviously had strong influences from WWII (Check the weapons models).
Human nature is violent, greedy and opportunistic. Given the opportunity there will always be someone with the ambition to grab for power and oppress those who may stand in the way. An unfortunate fact is that the only way to put down a force of arms is to use a force of arms.
Squad Leaders can be of the Empire (Where a lack of absolute control would be inappropriate), the Rebellian (Where total control would be inappropriate) and Neutral (Which can swing either way). While it would be inappropriate to give Squad Leaders absolute power it is totally appropriate to give them the tools to contribute to the squad, through their skills, the same amount as if they had mastered a different combat profession.

I think there is a thought on this issue that some people are missing.
When I am in a hunting group, I alway assign someone to watch for adds. If there is one, they take the add and mange it while the group deals with the primary pull. Now, if I use Volley Fire and I am the one handling the adds, I get one shot from the team and everyone reverts. If it is changed so that every member of the team has their target shifted, then they are no long concentrating on the mob I want them on.
The short of it is that you would not be able to use Volley Fire if you have taken steps and precautions in your group to handle the adds. This makes the proposed change to Volley Fire useless if you are actually doing your job as a good group leader.
Thoughts?
I'm a 4/4/4/3 SL by now .. and still the only things I really need for my daily work are sysgroup, the title of Field Commander and a FormUp or two per evening.
I chatted with another SL on our server back yesterday about the schedule for upcoming changes.. I never experienced a situation that made so much use of /mood
