Thread: Why do you enjoy Squad Leader?

I originally took up novice squad leader in order to take down bases. During CU respec I ditched Master Merchant in favour of Master Squad Leader. Since then I'm liking the group aspect, giving bonuses to group members and generally the rpg element that has been mentioned above. Always something nice about telling groupmates who to fire and when. That and the MSL weapons are good fun.

I love it because its the most selfless profession in the game. The whole point to squad leader is to help others. In a game where everyone strives to be the most uber player, its nice to bring some group bonuses to others. Half of my friends that play the game dont even know what squad leader does...they say "why the hell are u going squad leader?"...and i say "Do u want plus 30 ranged and melee defenses? Do u want accuracy bonuses and terrain negot?...then shut up and let me help you. They now understand my goal and appreciate me going SL to help the group. Plus post CU the group is everything! why not make it stronger?!

I love my MCarb / MSL

The E5 looks great, and performs -very- nicely. (I swap that back and forth w/ my E11 mkII)

Everyone that ends up grouping with me, ends up looking for me everytime they hunt / do a new dungeon (avatar, myydral, etc). And in group PvP - melee players will flat out /worship you for lending your /retreat skill to them. Seriously, if you haveparticularly large group of people (to where there will be more than enough to fill the 8 man limit) - try to get all of the melee'ers/jedi in your group and keep feeding them /retreat. You may not be doing all of the damage, but you'll be the hero.

Additionally, on regular hunts I tend to be an aggromagnet with my carbine. MSL is great because after you drop some damage with your carbine, you can renew /rally or give updated /sys orders. It helps thin out the hate generated from the fast carbine dmg, and thus keeps the critters aggro'd on your actual tanks. With a bit of practice, you can manage to deal respectable damage while keeping the party buffed, and never draw unwanted aggro.

Jedi will love grouping with you since LS accuracy tends to not be that great. Feeding them /rally and /volleyfire helps them to tank better and hit more often. Especially those Jedi with incomplete templates. And NOTHING is more fun than grouping with a bunch of Jedi in someplace like Myydral caves - make sure they all have some degree of /forcerun or another, toss a /retreat on top of it - and you have instant Jedi Special Olympics.

Very useful combination, MCarb / MSL. I personally tossed in BH carbine line as well for a bit more punch with Improved Crit shot as well. This template can hold its own in PvP, help your side dominate in group PvP, keep it organized in PvE, and you get Assault and Battle armor certs. (Regular ST armor and Assault trooper armor for the win!)

***EDIT: Addtionally - (Commissar) is by far the best title

No, I'm not trying to be negative.

I'm considering creating a carbineer/squad leader character, and the SL profession seems like a very fun and unique choice, even if a lot of the profession is not working correctly at the moment. (That's just the impression I get from these forums, not sure if that's actually the case)

So my question is: If you were talking to someone considering the profession (me), would you suggest they become a Squad Leader? Why and why not? Is it really enjoyable if you get into the roleplay of the character?

I'm trying to decide between a fun crafting profession (like DE) and a fun combat profession (like SL), so that's why I ask. Thanks for your time!

I totally would recommend becoming a SL if you love group play. Our group enhancements rock, our command and control is great. Of course they could be better yet but they do work. It is really enjoyable if you a have a good group to work with that is willing to listen to direction if they are not then your being grouped with them is pointless.

Roleplaying wise it is probably the best 2nd best combat profession (after smuggler(I don't count jedi as no one roleplays them)). You get to say things like "alright you maggots we have to take this hill", "we're in this thing together", etc and if you are a madman bent on world domination you can even say things like "To crush your enemies, see them driven before you and hear the lamentations of their women."

otoh as a crafter you might find smuggler more to your liking as they actually have personal abilities that make you more useful as a single combatent in combat. SL has no attacks currently and so would not be a great profession to try and hunt alone with.

Yet another reason to love SL.

We had a big PvP event on Tarquinas last night. Probably 40 to a side.

Divided up our assaulting Imperial forces into groups - pistols/rooters in a group with one MSL leading, melee/jedi in another with an MSL leading (me in this case, keeping /retreat going continually so they never get kited), long range rifle types with another SL, etc, etc.

Any time the objective changed or someone needed reinforcements, command/request was relayed to the SL of each group - which they relay to their entire group with /sys. Made it quite efficient and a lot of fun.

The lag sucked with that many people battling, but a big 3 hour + group PvP event was a blast. And the SLs were right up front.

Special thanks to Yny (antother Tarq Imperial MSL) for organizing this one, if you read this forum at all.

I didn't bother reading the posts, I'm kind of tired.

I picked Squad Leader because I thought I would be useful for friends and other people. It turns out, people thought I wasa natural leader and, as I roleplay, it became a part of me. While I have since dropped it, I am picking it up as we speak. It has been my favorite profession, and I really worked hard to make it a profession everyone could be proud to have. Then I just got tired.

Anyway, I love it because I am a good leader and it gives me a good opportunity to group with people.
