Thread: Why do you enjoy Squad Leader?

No, I'm not trying to be negative.

I'm considering creating a carbineer/squad leader character, and the SL profession seems like a very fun and unique choice, even if a lot of the profession is not working correctly at the moment. (That's just the impression I get from these forums, not sure if that's actually the case)

So my question is: If you were talking to someone considering the profession (me), would you suggest they become a Squad Leader? Why and why not? Is it really enjoyable if you get into the roleplay of the character?

I'm trying to decide between a fun crafting profession (like DE) and a fun combat profession (like SL), so that's why I ask. Thanks for your time!

Roleplay, that's the key (right now). The combat abilities & such aren't terribly useful (although they do have their moments), but the roleplay capabilities are endless. I still get warm fuzzies everytime I start a great Military Speech before leading my troops into battle.

Plus, the SL title commands a little respect, given our reputation. Combined with Carbineer (like myself) you can do a pretty good job of tanking in a tight spot, and leading from the thick otherwise. And the badass titles.. I mean, "Field Commander"... Doesn't get any cooler than that... And if your carbineer also, you get "Mercenary", "Infiltrator", etc..

I was a master SL a long time ago, and have since come back to it post-CU and /respec. I'm enjoying both my E5 carb, and my intimidator pistol. I've tied it with M.Marksman and M.Carbineer, so I do reasonable DPS.

I enjoy leading groups and have followed the path of assisting the group as a whole, compared to maxxing my stats for DPS.

Once they fix the SL commands, it'll be even better. With the Assualt Armor cert's you get with M.SL, I enjoy the added resistance to kinetic damage (as I PvE more than PvP) and with a good PSG, it adds more energy protection which brings me damn near on par with my kinetic on my armor.

Just my thoughts.

iused respec to finishout the last two boxes for MSL, then joined my guildies on hunting parties. this was during Bugfin's 4x xp week and everyone was out hunting rantos and banthas. itold themi'm a MSL and if they make me group leader i can do some cool stuff. hardly anyone in the group, or even the guild, knew much about our profession but they agreed. after a couple days, as soon asi logged on i would get some tells giving me the waypoint of the group. they were begging me to come out there with them, all because of the way i handled communication (Jedi A, heal these guys; Jedi B, tank the lair, combat guy C, watch your health) and the use of my specials.they all said they noticed some benefitfromme being in the group.

that's the positive; if you do it right, your friends will love that you're a SL.

the negative is that if you dont do it right, they wont care you're a SL. the profession offers little to you and much to your friends. but you have to able to handle it as such. if you cant handle SL and manage your specials correctly your just a mediocre combat profession. play the prof as its designed and you'll turn your group into a killing machine.

that's why i enjoy being a Master Squad Leader

oh, and a bad ass looking pistol, rifle, and carbine dont hurt either.

I play a MCarb /MSL and those are the only two profession I Mastered

Check this link in this post
Do you talk like a squad leader

They Key to enjoying your profession is RPing and those quotes do a lot of bring RP to the grinders.
They will certainly love you for that, give them targets divided them into a seperate firing teams, since the usualy grind is just boring.

The one thing that makes SL great in my eyes is that we are a social combat professions.

I am a MSL/MPist and I like the Squad Leader profession. For combat, it gives nice general ranged accuracy, speed, defense, as well as melee defense. Match that with Pistoleer mods and with any pistol I pick up I have speed of over 100 and Acc/Def of over 200. The defense sticks with any weapon I am able to pick up. In a group, the rally command boosts my accuracy up to about 250. Sure I miss. Just not very often.

RP - Being the combat leader regardless of faction and rank is nice. Not because of the power trip, but because I am doing what I can to help the fight. I can help the fight in ways no one else in the group can. I am our guild's squad leader. I get a /tell everytime a hunt starts. You can be very active as a SL... never a dull moment.

Personally, I think the Weapons the MSL got with the CU rock. I have a hard time putting down my intimidator, even for the reward pistols (except maybe the Kashyykian Stalker...dang nice gun). I have my E-5 when I need a little extra range. The Tchotee(sp?) flare gun is not bad at all. If I can ever get my hads on a Dawnsorrow Rifle, I can hang my DC-15 on the wall.

Sure our job could be better, and I will accept any improvements, but I like SL whether things change or not.

I first picked it up almost 2 years ago along with ranger so I could provide some group bonuses and camps. I love the RP aspect of the profession, and when you combine it with carbineer it can create the ultimate support template. Once suppression fire works you'll be able to rally your troops, stay back and area snare then just full auto them.

On my server i'm one of the top rebel pvpers, belonging to this organzation known as the Rebel Strike Force which is pretty much a huge mailing list of rebel guilds. We have taken down more then 150 imperial installations and I have been involved in some of the biggest and bloodiest battles on my server. I played an SL long before many realized it did have benefits, i'm probably the last remaining original SL left, have beennominated SL of the year for some player event.

Combining the skills like rally, retreat and volleyfire you can do some excellent tactics, along with your /sys messages. Steady aim right now to me is useless, you don't know what bonus it grants and the warm up timer is longer then rally.

PS: Field Commander is the best title in the game.

I enjoy being a Squad Leader because it suits my RP. I enjoy being a guild leader, master poltician, and master Squad Leader. Although, the uselessness of Squad Leader in many situations pains me.

I've gone squad leader for the simple reason that it's the closest thing to how I play on all other games and leagues.

For me, why I like Squad Leader, is in many other games, I've played a squad leader in one form or another. I've played a gang leader and a wizard guild leader in charge of several underlings. I just end up having a lot of grand ideas that I can and try to incorporate. For me, it just fits. I enjoy the leadership that is involved. It gives me a sort of power, the funny thing is, I'm not a power player or power hungry person. I get a good feeling when I incorporate something and seeing it work. Plus, I'm a gamer, I never had a chance to run any games the way I saw them in my mind. Now that that's got off on some weird path...lol

Despite my messy nature, structure and organization with something that I like is a big thing and will always try to rearrange something to work best. Plus, I most of the times pick the weirdest things. Like a vampiric archaeologist.

Dunno if that makes sense to anyone or not, but other than that, I just like the roll.

tbh, i dont like SL at all after the CU. The skills seems more useless now then ever.

Sure some skills got fixed and made more usefull, but it just doesnt cut it for me. im gonna keep the prof, because i used to love SL inspite of all its flaws. But the CU just killed it for me. i dont enjoy it at all anymore.
Thank god for my second account

It's quite simple for me, I RP, I'm a guild leader, and it suits my personality.
