Thread: Squad Leader Fortifications 1.0

before i start i just want to say that i would like this thread to be a discussion of ideas, so please dont just read its a post a "/agree" or "i like this idea!!!" or "please DEVs add this into the game" or whatever. if you like the idea post your own ideas or if you dont like something say what you dont like and sugguest changes.


Brief Over view:
a fortification would be a temporary stucture similar to scout camps that DOES NOT preofrom any of the functions that camps provide (this include healing bonuses, wound healing, entertaner allowances, crafting station, ect) but instead would provide a powerful boost to melee and/or ranged defences for large scale combat. Fortification could include such scrtuctures as a Bunker, a sand bag wall, barrior wall, trenches, ect. in addition to increasing the deffences of a group, higher level fortifications could also provide bonuses to SL abilities like steady aim and volly fire (this is assuming that the DEVs fix these skills sometime in the near future). a fortification could also have the ability to be set up around or combined with ranger camps, wich would create a termporay comand station that can be used for both combat and healing.


i wanted to wait until i could compline all of the ideas that have been posted on other threads, but this is the general idea of what we have come up with so far. ill try to write up a complet overview of all ideas in the next couple days, which will include all opposing arguments to the idea and the counter arguments ive come up with. just wanted to get this thread open so we could continue the disscution and keep the ideas coming.

I LOVE the bunker idea, as I think it would help keep groups together. I would like to see some sort of "tower" at the Master level. something almost exactly like the Imperial tower already in the game, that could have a an elevator to the top, and give the snipers something to shoot from. Just a thought, but I thought it would be cool

thats not entirely a bad idea but its a good start. constructing a tower with an elevator in the middle of the wilderness probabaly wouldnt be posiible unless it was crafted and deployed by an archetect. but making a small raised platform could be a posibility..... it would probably only be able to hold one or two players and would increaed ranged weapon range and accuracy. but probably woundnt provide any defencive bonuses. not sure.... well any way it is an interesting idea, ill play around with it and see if i think of anything else

the defensive bonuses should be equal (or just a little better)to the bonuses you get from being prone... but in the SL base, you don't have to BE prone. You are provided with "cover" to hide behind which allows you the benefits of being prone but allows you the mobility of not laying down on the ground.

I don't like the bunker idea because I prefer to be mobile. You generate your best defenses by moving.


I also don't like it for PVE purposes. A bunker like this would make you impervious to most mobs. i.e. they could not get to you to melee you.


I agree that the firebase or bunker idea fits the idea of a Squad Leader. But, within the current combat mechanics of the game, it does not fit SWG.

I think this would be a great asset to a whole new profession: Combat engineer.


(When the devs said that turrets and stuff could be built in the field this is the kind of thing I envisioned. But alas.)

It's been posted that the bunker walls would not be collideable, meaning that you could run through them. The bonus would be like eariler stated, like being prone without BEING prone. Also, the tower, or platform could give a bonus to range for riflemen.

I think this idea has promise in the game but I do not think it should be in the hands of the Squad Leaders. It is our job to organize the troops and their efforts. Creating structures will lead to the need for crafting and while this may be a nice thing for the economy of the game to have another crafting class, I am not interested.


This would be a 'cheap' way to deal with what you are discussing but what ifthere were no graphics associated with the 'bunkers'. You now have a defense buff. It would be just as easy to just grant us the bonuses without the added graphics.


Just my thought.

But the bunker would give the group a rallying point. a way to stay a squad, not a bunch of people running around like it usually is.

I look forward to reading it. I do not think that handing the schematics to someone else to make and have an SL deploy gets into a lot of problems. If you are going to do this, it would need to be an extension of our harvesting abilities to make like sandbag bunkers.

I rather have the squad leader bea reason of unlocking this ability from a architect. Let only the architech build fortifications but he can only do it under a squad leader. let the leader bring out the best of other classes.

that is one of the issues i was going to bring up in my offical report on the idea that hopefuly i will be able to write up tonight. there are several ways to go about the crafting issue, either we craft the bunker ourselfs, or the sckematicscan be given to an other class most likely either ranger or architect, or combate engineer, BUT, only a SL can deploy them. but like i said i will try to dig into this issue deeper in my offical report
