Thread: Time for expansion but no time for Smuggler?

Except for company greed, can anyone explain to me how the poor, overworked Devs have time to develop an entire expansion yet cannot fix the numerous bugs, problems within the live game?

Surely if they can assign a team to develop expansions there must be enough people to revamp Smuggler, Ranger, Squad Leader, etc.

Man, I'm really going to be unpopular by saying this, but here goes.

I think the company probably has a long term outlook on expansions, meaning they look at the next, say, 5 years and plan to put out a certain number of expansions (it keeps the game alive, though if I would have picked an expansion and expansion world, it would have been Hoth or something relating to the actual time of the game, but I'm not a marketer...). They have a team working on that. While they were working on that, they had another team working on the GCW, the Jedi revamp, and the combat revamp. These all came out (or at least the third is currently in the develop and test stage). They have yet another team working on the smuggler (unless I've missed where Greenmarine was reassigned). So, they got out the GCW, Jedi and combat all while the other team was working on the expansion.

I think they are still working on the smuggler, while sticking to their longterm plans and goals. If I hear something contrary after combat revamp comes out, *then* I'd call them liars and such, and either make another character or quit the game entirely. But seeing as how they have to basically redesign the game to accomodate what the smugglers want to do, I personally am giving them a little slack.

Just my two bits.

All of these items for the new expansion have more then likely already been finished just needed a few tweaks.

They had 2 planets they were working on for JTLS but didnt have time to finish them.

Altimor,
All I can say is, they made the mistake in naming the profession "Smuggler". We smuggle nothing. They would have been better off calling it "Scoundrel". As it is now, all we can do is hotwire and sell drugs...
The frustration of the board is that there is no "proof" that the Devs have been working on anything other than the Combat Upgrade, New Expansions that are supposed to leech money from the new movie, and Wallpapers that no one asked for.
I don't think we are out of line to be upset that we keep getting placed on the back burner instead of realizing our profession as it *should* have been implemented. They were the ones that called it "Smuggler". We have all *been* patient, waiting for the class to be fixed after being told over and over again that it would be. I guess the problem is that we believed it??
Don't think that we won't be thrilled when we finally get a fixed profession. We will jump for joy and praise Sony for quite awhile, but so far.... nothing. Oh wait, we got a game to play with Jawas..... *groan*
Sorry I am so negative, but this is depressing. I will continue to play my Smuggler even though there is no demand for his services or any real in-game use for him other than selling faction armor and furniture (remember when Han Solo did that in the movies?) because I, like many others here, like the idea of what they could have done with the Smuggler class, and am holding out for what they... one day.... will do.

I'm with you all the way on this. A new expansion, especially timed to take advantage of Episode III, could be pretty good for the game in terms of drawing new players and increasing the galactic population, and as it and the CURB are coming sooner than I expected, I look at it as a modest positive. (Though the CURB testing WAS most certainly pushed back to provide the time to finish the expansion, so I'm somewhat ambivalent about it all.)

If, however, we are not the A-1 with a bullet priority for new material after May 5--and I don't want any more effing secrecy; the hard fact of progress on our revamp needs to be clear as day--I don't see myself playing past June. At that point it will have been two years, and I have a little too much self-respect to go on paying for a game whose developers would obviously care nothing for the promises they've made to this profession. I love other parts of the game, I love the friends I've made here, and I love its potential, but at that point, it would simply be time to move on.

Tomo, this is not a flame on you at all, but...

How many times are smugglers going to continue to say this? "If we're not next, then..." Reason I ask is that I've been witnessing a lot of people saying that about the revamp, that "if we're not next after the chef revamp" or "If we're not next after JTL" or "If we're not next after the CURB" and finally "If we're not next after the new expansion".

As long as people continue to pay to play the game, they really don't give a damn about what profession you play. Hell they don't care if you even log in. They get their 15 bucks a month, they are happy. Customer satisfaction appears to be a very low priority.

I know there's nothing we can do about it, but - man, I see posts like this from unhappy people and they remain here and remain a smuggler, and all the time feel mistreated and yet continue to pay. I was there myself; I ultimately dropped the class because I still enjoy parts of the game and am not at the point of quitting yet. But I changed my circumstance where I was no longer miserable.

How many others are drawing a line in the sand and will stick to it when the time comes to cancel? Because that's the only way SOE will get the message - a significant loss in subscriptions.

They will always have time for more and more expansions, but i think who said it previously, we are a minoriety, just not vocal enough or enough of us left in live game for them to warrent the time and effort it will take to fix our problems.

They will continue to work on the cash cow crops "most bang for the buck" and smugglers will yell ,ran,t rave, and no changes come in the foreseeable future............

Just wanted to reiterate a small part of the above post I made. I'm cutting them some slack because they haven't deviated from the "smuggler after CURB" course yet, but I'm not one of the above mentioned people, Schrendyc. I'm playing a character who's whole concept is doing shady deals, so if this doesn't show progress after CURB, I willbe making another character (least drastic response) or quitting the game entirely (most drastic response). So far, my main is the only character I've found interesting, and I'd be hard pressed to find something else ingame that I'd want to ernestly shoot for. I want more than just combat. I want missions and content, but I don't have the patience for a Jedi. *Shrugs and grins*

If I had to guess (and I DO, I don't know anything)...here is what I think went down:

SOE has a plan to release an expansion on a yearly basis (I think I read this somewhere).

The first was JTL of course and if you will remember- for the longest time they wouldn't tell us how many

planets there were going to add. I think this was because they didn't know how many they could finish any in time for the release date.

One could say that the Wookie Planet was asked for by the masses and that is why they started working on it but my guess would be that- yeah, they saw the requests but it was some marketing "genius" that decided it would be great to have it in game before the movie release.

I'm also going to go as far as to say they have started work on HOTH- not only because it was the natural choice and the most requested choice but also because- and some of you may remember this- they tested ATATs on test center around the time the were working on JTL.

Another thing that was supposed to go into JTL that I'm sure is setting half complete on a number of desks is Jabba's Casino.

Alas, There were a crop of other problems that were getting out of control:

The falloutfrom the Holo system, Jedi (end game) problems, Combat imbalances, the standing fixes professions have needed since the game began (like us) and the fact that the GCW was slowly dying. All of this was bleeding the game.

SOE decided to cut bait on the worlds (casino) as they would not be done on time without sacraficing the actual game itself.

(I also say this because- and tell me if I am wrong because I was not there- most of what we know now as JTL wascomplete by Fan Fest, no?)

So they redistributed duties to address some of the other issues better/sooner. The timeline for publishes was switched around and it was in this vein that greenmarine was "allowed" to work with us in his "spare" time.

This would also make them look good- as compared to the heated law suits they hadover not fixing EQ but adding expansions to it-

As things came down to the wirewith therelease date looming in the not too distant future- again, I am just guessing here- LA begins to put a closer eye on SWG. With a movie coming out- and a game with hundreds of thousands of subscribers- you do not want to miss an opportunity of free cross promotion.

We will all remember that LA was not pleased with what they saw- there was an outbreak in all the mags for a while and even a rumor that they were going to take over the game. I imagine that it was at this time the pressure was put on to complete Kashyyk before the May release and a lot of things (positions) changed about this time.

It was here when GM disappeared- I bet it was hard to explain a Dev working on a future revamp in the DISTANT(at least a year- but now I'm starting to feel 2 years) future in his spare time when it should be devoted to the more pressing things at hand.

With the release of JTL- SOME Devs were- well not freed up but redirected to finish the Wookie world. The New devs were brought on to help with the everyday problems but all the other Devs continued to work on what they've been working on for a while the CURB/GCW.

I think we are in the mix- but WAAAAAAAY after they untie the knots they have before them.

I just wish they would tell us what they INTENDED but I know they probably can't.

SOE has GOT to be fearing a recap of the suits they had with EQ a little bit anyways. Better to say nothing than be wrong or outright lie about what they want/can/will do.

The problem with the Devs are is that they keep getting side-tracked. They don't sit their asses down and fix something. They plan to do it, I'm sure they do. But then they go "oh, look at this..." and fix something else. Then they either forget about the first thing, or go back to starting to fix the first and get side-tracked again.
If they'd just sit their ass down and get to work, while ignoring other newer bugs, revamps, ect, and fix the older problems this would be a very good game.
Of course... all this excludes Jedi. They'll put anything aside to give more loving to the baby Jedi.

If work on our revamp isn't obvious by this summer, I'll be quitting then--probably in July, just so I can say I made the two-year mark. There are other things about this game I enjoy other than being a smuggler and the possibility of what we might become, but that's my personal deadline for when too much becomes too much. The only reason I'm not outraged about this expansion is because I don't think it played any part in pushing us back.

But it's the last time. I want to smuggle. If it's not obvious by July that I'm gonna be doing so soon--or heaven forbid, that I already can--I'm hanging up my clamps and my subscription and walking into the Eisley sunset.
