Thread: Is smuggler worth it?

I am a slicer with dirty fighting 1and have 500k pistol xp to put towards smuggler if I so choose, but I am starting to wonder if it is worth it. Is there any real advantage on being a smuggler? There is a cap on faction points I can, from what I understand (correct me if I am wrong), and they are expensive to buy anyway, there are no real combat advantages, spices are useless compared to buffers from a doc - so you cant sell them for anything... so what is the point? I wanted to be a smuggler for the title and I thought it would be cool, but there are no smuggler missions, the only thing I see for smugglers is slicing, but I can just have someone slice my stuff. I guess the faction discount can be one advantage, but have they fixed it so you get the 25% off yet? Just looking for some opinions.

Do you think it is worth it or have you thought about moving onto another profession?

Hello there!

The Smuggler profession is being worked on and many people feel the same way you do. To some us role players out there it's a great profession. I know I've amassed a nice chunk of change so far and it can certainly make you some money. The bonuses that the Smuggler class offer at the moment are rather lacking but are being addressed (albeit slowly).

Anyone else want to add their 2 cents?

You forgot to mention that they are adding Smuggler Missions, which would be pretty sweet.

yeah I thought it would be cool if there were some smuggler missions and I could maybe work for the Hutt's or Jabba, so I have done some missions and gotten into the main room, but man that run out there is a drag. *points mouse* - *gets up goes and watches a movie* - *comes back and hey I can see Jabba's palace in the distance*

I'd love some missions and the ability to RP a little, but right now there is nothing, maybe I'll start new char elsewhere and come back when the have some smuggler stuff...

I wouldn't do it if I were you, I mean I don't have over 600k+ credits in my inv, I don't get /tells like crazy everytime I port into a town, it's really disappointing.

Right now the only real advantage a smuggler has is Slicing. It's not only great for personal use for a solid moneymaker.

Spice continues to be useless and unsellable because doctor buffs and food are far better.

Dirty Fighting is a comparatively useless combat skill tree.

Underworld is strictly useless.

So, right now smuggler trees are one out of four for usefulness. The devs however are promising more smuggler content and a revision of the smuggler skills, so you never know.

Define "worth it"? What do you want this game to be for you?

Smuggler for me is about a few things that I like that make it worth it (I won't go into he many annoying aspects).

1) I like RPing the smuggler

2) Slicing is a VERY effective means for making credits. Hint: don't just sit in the bank spamming for slices if you want to make the big money. Visit parties, cantinas. Talk to weaponsmiths and armorsmiths and ask if they have any work for you. Not only might you land a big contract, but you'll also get recomended.

3) Spice can be lucrative, and it can be fun. I especially enjoy making deliveries to high risk areas. Hint: Ever tried delivering spice to Bestine as an Overt rebel?

4) Smuggling leaves me plenty of skill points to be able to combine another profession and round out my character.

I guess I have to politely disagree with some of the above comments.

Personally, I really enjoy being a smuggler + pistoleer/TKA/medic/scout mix. But it's more about what you would enjoy. Smuggler is a solid fun profession, which leaves room for lots of other secondary professional growth: pistoleer, TKA, chef, medic, etc. Slicing and spicing is fun, guild-friendly, and can also be fairly profitable. Cearly, however, there are better pure combat professions, so if that is what you mean by "is it worth it," then the answer is probably no.

Spice is definitely not "useless" in my opinion. Sure, Doctor buffs are better, but unless you personally are a doctor, you cannot be sure you will always have one around to buff you. I personally love Neutron Pixie. For the low low cost of45 resources I get 800 seconds (~13.5 minutes) of +1000 health, +500 action, +200 strength and constitution, and +50 quickness and stamina followed by a couple minute downer. During the downer I generally meditate (TKA novice), or make camp and heal some wounds, enjoy guildchat, etc. But let me tell you, for those 13.5 minutes when I'm spiced up, I am significantly tougher and can crank through 2 - 4 missions usually. Incidently, doctors love Muon Gold (+500 mind, focus, and willpower) and will often trade metheir buffs for spice. I keep my guildmates spiced and sliced and I make a nice little living off of selling my goods and services to non-guildies for fair prices.

Either way, I hope you find a profession that suits you. Good luck to you.

It depends on your style of play. Smuggler is not a combat profession and shouldn't be considered one. I enjoy Master Smuggler and will never give it up. It allows me to pursue other professions due to the low Skill Point pre-req's. The faction perk benefits alone are worth it to me also being a human character.

I agree there are some holes in this profession, but I am loving what is here. Slicing is a serious cash cow, not to mention a great way to meet people. My spice sales are great, everytime I log on I have a stack of emails reading 'auction complete'. Underworld is certainly broken, but the DF tree is working great for me. Throw in slicing mission terms on the tougher planets for bigger payouts, and I am well on my way to a million creds in the bank. What do I need that for, you ask? Something tells me YT-1000 freighters ain't gonna be cheap when the space expansion drops...

Smuggler is a combat profession. Its a hybrid that uses all combat base classes. Even are crafting skills are related to combat. Spices = HAM buffs, Slicing = permanent damage buff, Underworld needs some work but it is PvP skills and Dirty Fighting combat specials. What about smuggler isnt combat? We need some work to become what we should be but its a very fun profession as far as I'm concerned.

I would recommned it to anyone.

If this was true we wouldn't need Feign Death.
