Hey Wes... I have a question. Do they have a timeframe for the smuggling changes?I think I'm going to cancel my account and go to guildwars.

Yeah, I've noticed that there's been a bit of a breakdown around here. I've been playing since March 2004, and Smuggler has been pretty much it for me. I like hanging around this forum inparticular, for a laugh and to check on progress to our ultimate goal. We do need to focus on that. But here's my beef:
I've seen many, many threads and post on how to implament the act of smuggling, some sort of criminal element, and all those things that would make us what we should be(and I'm no coder or programmer, but said ideas don't seem so farfeched from a game mechanics point of view). This has been happening since I began lurking around this place. And every time we are up to bat for some attention, it's some askew idea that has little or nothing to do at all with any concept discussed on this forum. I've always tried to be an optimistic, go with the flow kinda guy who loves this game even though the prime profession that I've chosen is "mistreated". But maybe all the "elder smugglers" have brainwashed me in a sense into being a little bitter.
I love what you're saying Wes, but you gotta admit that this community has been throwing ideas out left and right. Hell, I'll go looking for that one that really caught my eye and necro it later.
We've tried waiting. We've tried whining. Anyone got a plan C?

It's good, to an extent, that players can be a part of the developmentprocess ofthis game. But at the end of the day we're just players.
I think one of the main things that hurt SWG is the reliance on players to beta test and bug report. IMO this is how many major pvp bugs get patched into live.
Another thing that hurts the game is expecting people to not get upset by the fact that, after being asked for thier input, the game goes in directions that absolutely nobody asked for. Then, when we relent and stay with the game, old bugs from 2003 show up (for example,I was shot thru a wall by an NPC during CU beta...yes it was beta but how huge is it to have this old bug rear its ugly head again).
As far as Smuggler goes...it's sad but true that the prof has little RP value and almost zero combat value, be it pvp or pve. Yes, the new holy grail of special moves is the area root...but where on these forums have people made a70 page petition for a specialranged move that freezes players?
So in summation, it's a two way street. Yes, it makes goodfiscal sense to cut the testing payroll when you have a gamer population that willpayto test the game, but in the end you get alot of disgruntled people who may or may not be able to post constructively about it
Edit: but I do want to see the prof and the game succeed so I'll try to be less bitter and more constructive!

Wes, your words ring true in these ears (or in this case, eyes). However, a group is nothing without strong leadership. Besides yourself and the godfather(no disrespect if I forgot someone, I apologise), there are no vocal "day one" smugglers lurking around. Where are our Angus's, Veela's, Saarek's. They are gone. Their shoes can never be filled, and their absence has made bitterness all too easy. Gassygunslinger has put together this little gem, trying to eliminate some of the RAMPANT inter-profession conflict created by THIS forum. Check it out. It may be the first step to our salvation (WOW, that was dramatic )

Yeah, I was going to mention my Coalition of the Fubar, but... You know... I'm lazy... (I also suffer from accute clicky retardation)
Lately I've been comming pretty close to breaking some of those rules. I thought it was pretty pointless, but at least Veela supported me!
What was really pissing me off, was a certain person (-NOT- a smuggler, as far as I'm concerned) saying that we really don't need smuggling... That certain person really made me mad. I was close to going, "You know what? Screw you commandos! I hate YOU ALL!!! I hope you never get any more attention other than nerfs! Screw you guys, I'm going home!" ... But then the beer kicked in, and everything was a-okay...

I'm sorry, but Commandos, due to their releasing of a few village idiots into our forums, are like THIS close |----| to going on my "enemies of smugglers" list, along with jedi. I almost never see an SL or Ranger go out of line... (probably because they can't say how great they were pre-CU, and never had "their moment")... I'm not saying all commandos are bad... I'm just suggesting they keep their village idiots locked in cages.

Idunno.
You get kicked in the mouth enough times- you lose a few teeth.
I think what happend here is obvious. We got tired of being given the run around about smuggling for so damn long.
People deal with that different ways and that's where the conflict came from.
It seems to be a steady circle that most follow...You remain hopeful as long as you can- post ideas- read others ideas- get hopeful when you see a red name- then as time goes by you slowly begin to lose that optimisim and lash out. As time goes by- the lashing gets worse- some quit. some post elsewhere. some stay and just raise hell 'til they get what they deserve and some just raise hell for the time and money they spent waiting.
No wrong or rights with the people posting. They are just trying to deal.
The problem comes from the treatment that made them that way- but that's another thread.
I hear what you are sayin' Wes, it IS childish to cry about what others are getting and so forth- that's why I never participated in that behavior. However- I could not bear to talk about or read about anyone else's idea on how to implement smuggling.
I couldn't stomach another promise.
I couldn't think of anything else to write about and what I had to say about not being able to smuggle was vile.
So...I stopped writing.
And I feel pretty good.
My game time has also cut back to like once a week or less...and I feel pretty good about that, too.
Maybe all those who feel like I felt should leave the boards for a week or so. Or boycott them altogether.
I don't think SOE will notice really but we would all FEEL a lot better.
and there is always those OTHER boards.

Was good to read this post Wes. I've been a player since launch day and a smuggler since 11/03. Once I got my master title I never dropped it. The rest of my template shifts constantly but always a Master Smuggler.
I post now and again but primarily lurk on these forums. The community has had good reason to end up where it is now it seems to me. I remember the heady days back when I was first a Master Smuggler/Master Commando. My flamethrower could kill 5 npcs in one cone attack and if I wore my Master Smuggler title I'd get so many tells asking for slices that I could never respond fast enough to all of them.
The forums were filled with dreams of smuggling and flying YT-1300's. Evading star destroyers... running blockades... cheating customs inspections... bribing clerks to get our cargo through... taking jobs from other players to move their "hot" items... doing the kessel run in less than 12 parsecs... all the while getting the girl, winning planets at high stakes sabaac games and looking good and being cool as ice doing it.
There was a game where major features were at our grasp, speeders and player cities and starship combat and imperial crackdowns.... where our iconic Star Wars profession would be turned to by the dev team and implemented to its fullest glory. We talked and talked and talked and documented and documented and when we were done and had agreed with ourselves what was needed we started to discuss what the devs were actually doing and even documented what they said about us.
Almost none of it ever came. There wasn't any point in dreaming anymore now that the reality of what we could expect had sunk in. So we waited. There were months on these forums where the posts are primarily just folks hanging out and waiting... but having a good time and appreciating each other in the process. We got a rep amongst the galaxies as the folks to go to if you want to add some coolness to your life. Occasionally a dev would post a "umm... what's up with you guys?" thread. We'd reply with "yo jack... read the stickies and leave us alone till you are ready to actually implement something." Rough yet good natured.
Then we got the motherload. Greenmarine posted ideas for our revamp that could have been pulled right out of our stickied hopes and dreams. And we talked again... it was like the old days... anything was possible again... we came so close to getting it and then like poo charile brown our football was pulled out from under us before we could play. Then in short order the dreamers abandoned the dream and we are where we are today.
No dream left... just a vague yet heartfelt desire to Smuggle (Big S). The old sarcasm was replaced with anger and the good naturedness was replaced with meanness.
The dream isn't coming back as far as I can see. All the infinite promise of the game has been implemented in a way that is a shadow of what we all hoped for on that day when we bought the game cd and installed. After one disappointment after another how can we expect that when our revamp finally hits it will be even close to what we want?
What is there left to talk about that hasn't been said in the several thousand posts to this board? All the questions a newb needs answered is in the stickies. Until we get a real change or even an honest "In Development" thread going I fear its anger and meanness from here on out.

Im used to waiting. No need to tell everyone how I cant stand it any more. Plus, the Devs never said "We now have time to work on Smuggler" then starting adding it stuff for other profession. They gave us another In Concept. That means we have no idea when it could happen.

See, the thing that really rubs me raw is that some of you insist that you are better than the rest of us just because you started before us. I have news for you, people come and go all the time in MMO's, so get used to older smugglers leaving. It happens, and it's going to continue happening. The sooner you embrace the newer smugglers, the sooner you will be able to relax a little. It's quite clear that whining and complaining, acting like two year olds isn't working. It's time to move on and try a different approach again IMO.
