Just reading through the post and their seems to be alot of talk about player bounties and not a single thread i can find about what we wan in smuggler mission and this disturbs me a little because if we cant be bothered to discuss what we want our missions to be like why should the dev.

Ok so what do we want to do on these missions?

What will they consist of?

What type of things will we be smuggling and what will our reward be?

How can we benefit financialy if we choose to only have smuggler as a combat profession how does this effect the mission difficulty?

Should smuggling be a solo activity or could we have friends along helping us?

Where should we get our missions from, a smuggling terminal a npc like Jabba or Lady valerian?

Should to have an option for just ground, just space or both?

Should faction be considered as when taking missionspart of smuggler?

Moving goods from NPC A to NPC B with a chance of imperial patrols scanning and detecting your cargo.

Could be across planets or through space, docking with ships/spacestations.

Could be going to mission generated building A slice terminal to get result X.

Could be factional, rebels need supplies get them thru imp blockade and patrols, imperials need information on rebels slice terminal to locate rebel agent X.

I hope they come in stages and offer faction and action.

My ideal mission?

  1. You go to NPC mission giver (located in cantina- most likely bartender- or starport for space missions).

  2. He offers you a mission- you get the option to take it or ask for something a little riskier(low andhigh end missions)

  3. He tells you of a person needing something smuggled and gives waypoint.

  4. You go to WP where mission giver gives you the goods- an advance- and tells you how long you have to deliver.

  5. As you make your way to the point you are:

  6. Attacked by other thugs who want the stuff.

  7. Offered bribes by those who want the stuff.

  8. Dropped in on by security types who are following the stuff.

  9. Scanned more often with the stuff.

  10. Space Pirates who want to jack the stuff.

It would be cool also if sometimes something happens to your delivery person and you end up having to go somewhere else with the goods.

BUT MOST OF ALL- I want real BHs out to get us when we take those high end missions. If we make the delivery we win if they kill us- we lose. But that's not what this thread is about is it?

I guess we haven't talked about this end of the deal that much because we all pretty much agree on what we want and its kinda obvious what would make a good smuggling adventure. On the other hand, not all of us want real BHs on our tail. Just most of us.

I want player smuggling

NPC smuggling misisons, while a massive step in the right direction, will become as passe and uninteresting as the vast majority of PvE stuff in the game.

As the goal of actual smuggling comes closer and closer, let's not fail ourselves by aiming too low. Let's press for real smuggling - player smuggling.

How should player smuggling work?

I want actual illegal contraband items that other players are going to want to have but they know they'll get caught, killed, and have it confiscated if they tried to transport it themselves, so they will have to come to us. Things like *special* resources only available for sale by low-life NPC's on adventure planets that would maybe add some good stats to armor and weapons. We'd have to smuggle the stuff off-planet, and deliver it to the client. When you buy the resources, your character gets flagged in the system. The system would put high chances of us getting scanned and having rival NPC Smugglers on the ground and in space try and make us fail the run and take our cargo. If we buy over a certain amount of the resources, we'll gain a player bounty on us if we die before delivery. We'd have to reach specific and random checkpoints in space and on planets before the system would let the resources in our packs be tradeable, so we couldn't just make a quick travel in our ship and negate the risk.

That's just an example. Something similar to that would be fun to me. I also want to have skills that would allow me to actively (and not passively) avoid scans, or maybe talk my way out of a tight situation.

How should player smuggling work?

Oh man, you had to ask, didn't you...I've lost count of how many times I seme ot have written this same old mantra heh

Basically

  • Spice is mined in space

  • Smugglers have an 'Available for Work' list, similar mechanism for BH terms, displaying the Smugglers available for hire

  • Starports are patrolled by factional troops

  • These troops scan for spice, factional equipment, faction rank and Jedi

  • Smugglers can avoid scans, through one of various mechanisms - either simple scan evasion roll, use of different starports [my option of choice] etc

  • Therefore

    • Smugglerscarry goods and peopel onto factionally controlled planets

    • Where contraband is limited to spice, faction equipment [like bases, furniture] and Jedi/high ranking officers, the inconvenience of starport scansisn't applied to your average Joe player, it's only the factionally minded [ie the active soldiers] who suffer the inconvenience, which adds value/penalty to being a Colonel or a Jedi, which is a good thing, imo

    • The GCW gets a boost by way of incentive to fight

My choice for the smuggling mechanic at the moment is use of Smuggler-only Starports. Imagine us having access to Outpost Starports, which do not have shuttle facilities. So we land in the arse-end of nowhere, meaning our cargo can be intercepted. Hell, the outpost might even be staked out, and we're able to walk into an ambush. Link that to a Prestige system, which governs our price, our reliability and our success rate on the Available for Hire terminal, and also to our Visibiilty rating, and you have a system that could be amazing.

I see a situaiton where I can sit in a Cantina, tell the terminal or NPC that I'm available for work, and have a space miner come in, read the terminal andcontact me thorugh the Terminal/NPC mechanismthat they need transport to Naboo, but he can't get there as Naboo is Imperially held, and he's scared about having his spice confiscated [or degraded by death]. We agree the contract, we group up andwe hit space [the onyl way to access the Smuggler outpost starports is via space]. So I head over to Naboo, fly past the capitol ship that indicates Naboo is Imperially blockaded, play a little mini-game ala the Lambda Shuttle Tyderium* security'moment' in ROTJ whereby I have to trick [trick, not roll] my way through the blockade and am then free to land at the Naboo Pirate station, which is 15k from the nearest settlement.

Depending on how my security clearance trick went and my Prestige, I might be ambushed in space or on landing, or, I might land and bid my passengers a farewell, and wish them godspeed as they disappear into the Naboo night.

Then, as I turn to head back to my YT, the obattlescarred La Serafina, I hear the familiar laugh of OMGPWNERIZE-JOO, the notorius Bounty Hunter. He's tracked me all this way and I owe someone soem serious money.

Now that, my friend, is how to do smuggling.

* props to Angus heh

DAMN cpz!

The idea of a Smuggler only Starport rocks so hard they can feel it in Cali. THAT is the best idea I have heard in a long, long time.

The idea of having spice mined is pretty fresh too. With this latest release of Space Mining kinda makes you wonder if something is up, no?

I sincerely hope so

Was it the Shuttle Tiberious, in ROTJ, or was it Tyderium? I'm thinking I need an edit
