Thread: Did we really want a Smuggler revamp pre-JTL? Its much better post-JTL...

I'm always coming up with stuff to implement in the game all the time, but I could not think of anything good with a pre-JTL Smuggler revamp. Running missions while carrying spice on a swoop? Not much challenge or realism there folks. So honestly, the only way they could have made Smuggler awesome was to base it just like how it is in the movies and books - the heavily modified spaceships. We knew for a while that everything they were promising was post-JTL, the CURB and the GCW revamp. Now that the GCW revamp seems to be underway and the CURB dates nearly announced, the RotW expansion is nothing more than a publicity tie in and a few unfinished items finally finished. While I'm hurt that we get pushed back, and have little communication on the subject, I do like the fact that with everything they are adding so far, the Smuggler Revamp can be so much more awesome than originally planned. I'm about to get one-starred to death, so I better add the flame suit.

I agree that the Smuggler Revamp has the potential to be a lot better post JTL vice pre JTL.

Now the only questions that remain... What do we gain by being post ROTW, and how much do we trust them to incorporate JTL in it?

I really hope they make Smuggling dynamic, involving both JTL and ground game, and make it for Smugglers and not smugglers.

Hopefully my faith will be restored, but it's hanging on by a thread right now.

"Jedi claims of being "broken" are like saying "But my TV isn't widescreen! It's broken! My TV can't show high-def pictures in 1080i, it can only do 720i! It's broken!" Meanwhile, crafters are saying "We'd really like to have a TV that's larger than 12" and gets more than 4 channels and doesn't constantly lose vertical control", and entertainers are saying "Can we get some color instead of this B&W piece of junk?" And smugglers? We're listening to radio programs of "The Shadow" and "The Abbot and Costello Comedy Hour" and hearing FDR's Fireside Chats. We don't even HAVE a damn TV, much less a broken one or a "broken" one by Jedi standards. I'd LOVE to be as "broken" as they are." - The Legendary Solo4114

Sure, JTL offers another dimension to our potential abilities.. but was it really so outrageous to expect smugglers to be able to smuggle at, say, THE START OF THE GAME?

I'm not doggin on anyone here, but sometimes I think we start to take it for granted that the Smuggler profession would be so in name only until we were finally deemed worthy of some attention. Why weren't we able to smuggle from day 1? (I know why, cause we were slapped together in late beta, but bear with me.) Why weren't we addressed in the flurry of profession revamps that came in the first six months of the game? Why were we told to wait until JTL only to find out we'd once again be given nothing? Why are we going to have a second expansion out before any one of us "smugglers," some of whom will rapidly be approaching the start of our third year in the profession, can do a single bit of smuggling?

We wanted a revamp before JTL because we never should have had to ask for one in the first place. A smuggler that can't smuggle? Give me a break.

Lots of great points. 5 stars all around.

I think the only thing offencive in your post RogueCloudWalker is this: "I'm about to get one-starred to death, so I better add the flame suit."

How dare you think we would do that? You could I guess get hit by a 1 star ninja, but it take way worse than your thread to get "one-starred to death" here, I am proud to say.

I love this community.

Yeah! The nerve. I think that, around here, even when we disagree with each other we realize we're all in the same boat. The only time one-starring takes place is when someone asks a slicing question (and I think the responses then do sometimes get a bit overboard--hazing good, abuse bad) or when the Jedi and BHs start waving their cilia around. (Because they're single-celled, you see.) And with the FD nerf, we don't even have to worry about them anymore.

Yep, life is good.

Yeah, I remember when I mentioned something like that last year and when smugglers were coming up with their ideas for GreenMarine. Now that wasn't exactly the best time for me when I was saying hold off on the revamp and make it PC Bounty Hunters to come after us. I figured most of the community was entirely PvE when I took hits on the post. Smugglers did not want there to be seperate PvP missions with more reward. The PvE folks wanted to kill PvP and get all the rewards. That was a pretty contentious time and I remember that my ideas didn't go over to well until GreenMarine bailed me out by saying PvP members deserved their risk and reward strategy.

I assumed that the vast majority of smugglers were anxious for the ground aspects of the revamp only. Most of the people in the post said do not hold offto incorporate JTL. In fact, many said that the revamp should strictly cater to the ground folks and not interface or require the expansion at all. Thats why I assumed that those folks would get back at me for bringing the point back up. I'm glad to see the smuggler community has become much better since then!

Well the only part that bothers me a lot is the fact that our revamp SHOULD have been included with JTL.

They said from the beginning that we were more of a space based profession, but then the only people recognised as Smugglers are SA pilots.

Another point to take into consideration, there will have to be some sort of smuggling system on the ground. It was said before because they didn't want to force long time players to buy an expansion to play their profession. Now if that keeps them from making an in depth space aspect to smuggling, well then waiting until after JTL will be all for not, and I'll be one of the first ones to point out their previous statements about it being viewed as a space based profession.

It's funny that the frustration exists on so many levels that no matter how long you take to make a point, you always remember other details after you post. That's how screwey things have been with this game and this profession. You need some serious notes just to debate it's history and future.

That's one thing that's always really, really worried me, actually: saying smuggler is a JTL profession out one side of their mouths, then stating ground and space are separate games and they won't force anyone to buy the expansion out the other. How do you reconcile that? They can't really, the best they can do is introduce separate smuggling systems for both (gee, that sounds like it's right around the corner) or completely backpedal on one of their stances. In that event, either they leave it out of space, in which case the "wait till JTL" line was a complete and immoral sham, or they make it very space-centric, which DOES seem more appropriate but cuts a lot of players out of the content.

I just don't see a way out. Maybe they'll turn my world upside down by creating a separate system for both--and as long as I'm dreaming, these systems should work on their own but have tie-ins to each other for those who want to do both, and also I'd like a pony--but there's no quick and elegant solution here. It's either a) (continue to) screw someone over or b) commit to a truly enormous amount of work.

Not that we don't deserve it by this point, but thinking realistically and all.

Two things about that:

GM was trying to come up with both, with the high end (in other words bounties as punishmet) being the ones involving space.

The other thing is that Tyrant said not too long ago that they're going to be making changes to the game that make the ground and space more seemless. This came about with the whole Reb pilots becoming Rebels thing.

Now we know the first part is kind of up in the air and that a lot of us hope that they follow the path that GM laid out for them. And I'll tell you one thing, if they try to use the whole seperate items thing when they revamp us... I'll be very quick to point out the seemless post to him.
