Thread: I don't think we should settle.
I'm seeing a lot of "I'm dissapointed but I'll live with it if it's a little better than the last system" posts. SCREW THAT. What is this place, a slave camp? "Well, I was going to escape, but the new whip doesn't hurt as bad as the old whip"
What I think slicing should be:
An ongoing thing. You're resting between hunts, your sitting in a cantina, you're relaxing in your YT's lounge... you break out your gun and your tools and start fiddling. you tweak this, add some insulation to your power handler, replace the cheap copper wires with some superconducting silicon wires, adjust the damage range up a bit...
basically something a smuggler type would be doing in his spare time. Making the tools he uses work better, in whatever way he can at the moment. Like souping up a car, or Overclocking and modding a computer.
We should have a a graphical interface, like ID's, we should have a variety of parts craftable by Smugglers, Artisans, Weaponsmiths, Armorsmiths, hell, even DE's and Architects. And some lootable and Smuggling quest reward parts.
And the mods should show up on the guns when/if they fix weapon appearances. (I'm picturing a goldplated, pearl-handled FWG5 with a ported marksman barrel, silencer, and some doodads to make it look beefier.)
Long story short, the Devs haven't given us anything. They've made us MORE appealing as sliceWHORES. We shouldn't settle for dog meat when we were promised Angus Beef.
OK, I'll play along...
What about slicing being something similar to how Docs/CMs work these days.
I may be able to slice bare handed, but I can do better when I use better tools.
In other words, as something that could be added instead of trashing the system, make tools enhance points. Instead of capping at 100 for MS, cap at 80. You get 0-20 points from using tools. The better the tools, the more points. This would bring in a sort of 10 point MS similar to the 12 point crafter, but it would not be from loot. It would be from a MS taking the time to do a better job.
I agree with you that the system is in a way too simplistic. It makes one MS just like any other. In my other in game ventures I strive to provide the highest quality of product. Why wouldn't I want my slicing to be the same.

Very good post. I heartily agree - the current model on TC looks nothing like what was proposed. What a bait and switch. I'm getting a little tired of looking over documents that get me all excited to be a smuggler, then get a watered down version dumped on me that is nothing like the proposal docs.
We just keep getting worse with no light at the end of the tunnel.

Pimped out blasters would rule. But they probably don't want to be troubled with the extra art they'd have to put in game. I like your idea though, and agree with you
Yeah, now that the honeymoon is over... I'm gonna have to /sign this one.
We got ripped. What's on TC is a very, very pale shadow of what they've been leading us to believe would be something wonderful.
The pistol wouldn't be able to be traded, though, so it would belong only to the Smuggler... and be a one-of-a-kind pistol.

Another thing I'd rather have is different upgrades from WSs. Removable upgrades actually.
In other words, take Keck's ported barrel. A WS doesn't make an upgrade kit, he makes a ported barrel, and a Smuggler makes the upgrade since it's illegal. Or a nickel plating kit. Or anything along those lines. This would kind of fold in with what I was talking about where one of two things could happen.
The higher quality the part, the less expensive the modification points would be. or Something more along the lines of what I said before where the weapon/Smuggler gets more points so more modifications could be done.
Allow some, not all, modifications to be replaced. Have the modification actually break, not the weapon, so that the Smuggler has to replace the ported barrel or something along those lines.
Simply put, this is nowhere near the system that was proposed, and they SHOULD be taking input like this for improving the much less desirable one they now have.

umm.... what, exactly, is the alternative you're proposing? That they shouldn't release the slicing system? They should pull it out of this release and take it back to development for another 3-6 months?
Sure, I'm a little disappointed as well. I do think that slicing at least needs a new interface if not the mini-game that was in the concept forum. I also think that the whole slave-whip-wh0re thing is a little over the top. Have a beer and relax a bit.
Just like the pre-CU system... if you don't want to slice, then don't.
