I was looking for some resources when I received a tell to do a few slices.
I said "Sure, come on out to XXXX, YYYY. 5k per item"
The customer gets out there and says to me: "I'll pay you an extra 10k if you change your title to something else and then back to Master Smuggler"
"Why?" I ask him.
"Because people get Master Smuggler, drop the skills, but keep the title. I want you to prove you are a Master Smuggler."
"Oh, alright," I say, and change my title and then back to Master Smuggler.
"Thank you!" the customer says and gives me an extra 10k.
I didn't know this was an issue nowadays. Has anyone else been asked to prove you are really a Master Smuggler?

Nope, never not once have I been asked to prove I was a master, perhaps you look like a "shady" individual.
Now that I think about it I wish I was asked more, maybe I look too innocent and nice.

The first title I ever had was (Rogue) since I got Master Smuggler never taken it down, and I have NEVER been asked to prove I was a master Smuggler.

Actually yeah, my character is pretty shady-looking. I do not wear the normal style of clothing I see most smugglers wear. Maybe I'll take a screenshot and show ya.

Once long ago I was wearing my Rogueand a guywas spamming for a slicer, so I told him I'd do it just so he'd shut up. He asked if I was a Master and I said I was. He said "Your title's Rogue." I flashed the Master tag and weproceeded with business.

In my days before being a smuggler, I often thought about asking people to do the same. There are a LOT of scamming douchebags in this game. Most of us smugglers are just honest criminals, though.

Never been asked to change tags but I have had 'trouble' with two people saying they don't trust me to give the sliced stuff back - c'mon guys, you travelled 2km to get me to slice that CDEF

I think this request originates from a not unusual bluff where you keep your Master tag (much more common on Master Docs than Master Smugglers) and steal items and tipped cash from players. The fake docs shout in Coronet or Theed that they will buff people if tipped first .. after they get tipped they claim to not have received the tip ... or simply run way. The fake Master Smugglers keep the items ... and a stolen PvP suit for a few 100 k is not a bad haul.
have fun

Just for info, I droped master commando the other day with that being my current tag. As soon as I droped the master box, it warned me that I could no longer use the title and set me with a blank title. I think thats always been the way, but you used to be able to simply set you title with /ui (i think)
Fenris.

Loooong ago also you used to be able to use a command line string to change your title to something you were not and there were people out there scamming being master smugglers. That got fixed way way back though so I'd bet this is because of a few jerks that took master smuggler while doing the holo quest stuff and decided to keep the title and screw others.
I just love how the anonymity of the internet and mmorpgs bring out peoples true nature sometimes...

it's true, you get that message when you drop a titled skill. And it goes away. But if you log off and log back on it reappears.

I've had this happen once...
I was hanging out in Moenia and got a /tell from a guy. It seems one of my other customers had referred me to this guy, since, at the time, I was going about my business as a "Novice Scout".
Anyway, this guy wants his stuff sliced and his friend gave him my name, so I arranged to meet him behind the cantina. He gets there, takes one look at my title, and politely asks me to show my Master Smuggler tag. I /shrug, flash Master Smuggler, and we go on with business.
