I'm sure Han and Lando had rigged the hell out of the Falcon, so one must wonder, why slicers, er.. smugglers, can't fiddle with the components of our ships?

True. Nor a bounty hunter. And thus I must accept my unworthiness for in game content! How could I have been so presumptuous. Too much beer, not enough pie.

something to do with starship componets already being capped and the devs not wanting to redo the entire starship components in order for smugglers to actualy do some good for a change

It's been stated that we can't slice components because they're already in a state of balance and slicing them would screw that state up.
On the other hand, the slicing system we were supposed to get (somewhat different to the one we got) was intended to have POB slicing, which as Tomo said would help POBs reach the potential they should be at now. This would also be the perfect solution in my mind as well, as not only would it not involve a large balancing act, but it's also very Smugglerish to improve a POB size ship, rather than a snub-fighter (what the heck're you gonna Smuggle in one of those anyway right?).
All this is academic however, until we get some sign from the developers on anything development wise for Smugglers and indeed JTL.

That's really hideous, and I guess, sadly emblematic of the lack of vision in design (or at least in final implementation) of things in this game. Smugglers don't smuggle, can't tweak up (through any means necessary, especially illegal!) their ships... I know it's been said time and again, but what the hell movies were the developers of this game watching when they designed it? Do the films ever even cross their minds when it actually come times to implement anything?
The more I think about it, the more a frothing at the mouth rant wants to crawl out of my butt, but alas, what's the point? I mean, the game was built from the beginning as one of Koster's fantasy MUDs with a Star Wars skin, with smugglers being naught more than standard MUD rogues, most definitely not smugglers. However, with his ouster, and the situation with subscriptions prior to JTL, one would think that maybe things would change, that they would try to capitalize on the themes that have made the Star Wars universe so popular, but again, in JTL, the whole smuggler archetype from the movies was just utterly, completely missed, ignored. It's a vicious wound to the "Star Warsiness" of the game, and one that continues to be left to bleed (as more are added, too, with each publish..)
What can we do? We can fume and froth at the mouth about it, and maybe when things reach a boiling point, we'll get platitudes whispered in our ears, and smoke blown up our arses, as has been the case with the mythical... no, I'm not going to be generous here, the in all likelihood, nonexistant smuggler upgrade that was supposedly being worked on, even getting its own in-concept entry. But in the end, given the skeleton crew of developers, and the half-arsed way in which any coding in the game actually gets done, it's just doesn't look promising. Not just for smugglers, but for almost any profession outside of the BH/Jedi universe (well, and combat medics, but I'm convinced that they're essentially in the same shoes as creature handlers at release, a profession that benefits largely from a symbiotic relationship between it's prerequisites and those of the dominant professions).

I hear we'll be allowed to slice ship components next patch, and by that, I mean they're removing spice from the game.

RIXEN! Welcome to our forum, short stuff. You a smuggler now?
(For those who don't know, Rixen is a legend on the Starsider forums, and a true master of Paint.)

Obviously not a big enough legend if you don't know I've been one for two years

I tend to hear more about your buffun-ness than you uber non-smuggling skills.

please don't bring starships into this, the less jtls is mentioned the better
at this moment you can still play in space without being a **expletive** jedi or a bh...
