I've seen this arguement alot Wes and it just seems so silly to me. The Shipwrights can Reverse Engineer items which if done in the right combinations can result in far enhanced components. The catch is that it takes as many components to do as the RE level and you only end up with one at the end. So RE'ing ten L10 blasters to get one in return is tough to convince yourself of until you see how far superior the final product is. The RE process takes the best stat from all of the components and gives them to the final along with a bonus based on the RE level. An RE'd item can't be RE'd again.
So why not allow us to slice items that can be RE'd but only need the one item. The bonuses could be lower in general and for most folks this would enhance their ships nicely without the need to either collect or lose as many parts in the bargin. Having the option of having 10 marginally better guns or one exceptional one would be a very positive change. Of course sliced items wouldn't be able to be RE'd after they are sliced and to avoid crazy issues crafted items shouldn't be sliceable. With those constraints there is no way it would unbalance the system since by definition the RE process currently generates far superior parts with a similar process.

Well the nose of my B22 is pretty big and I imagine (cuz thats the only thing we can smuggle is our imagination) that I'm smuggling small but pricey goods (ie gems, weapons prototypes, Information etc) rather than bulk supplies of explosives, food, spice etc.

On the other hand, the slicing system we were supposed to get (somewhat different to the one we got) was intended to have POB slicing, which as Tomo said would help POBs reach the potential they should be at now. This would also be the perfect solution in my mind as well, as not only would it not involve a large balancing act, but it's also very Smugglerish to improve a POB size ship, rather than a snub-fighter (what the heck're you gonna Smuggle in one of those anyway right?).
All this is academic however, until we get some sign from the developers on anything development wise for Smugglers and indeed JTL.

I would also think since there is a type of slicing already in place for ship components. It's called "Revese engineering", you can get some very very nice components from the RD process. If you were allowed to slice them further, it wouldcause serious balance issues.

Rather than slicing components then why not a 1 time buff modification? Jump on board yours or a friends POB and wander round to all the component panels and get a hotwire option. This could include upping the regen rates of shields, cap regen, refire rate on weapons and so on. A bit like droid programs this could be used to enhance the ship in combat as a 1 off buff but not be permanant.

That is a great idea. I love it. However since devs ignore us....it will happen when we can smuggle

As a Shipwright and Pilot (Smuggler's Alliance Ace) I would like to see Smugglers able to slice their own POB's beyond even what REing can do to improve equipment. Right now POB's are just target practice items against snub fighters.
Smugglers should be able to slice their own POB ships on a recurring basis just like droid programs. I think the shields should be able to be "tuned" to deflect incoming attacks (with little to no damage to the shields) a certain percentage of the time, and armor should be "coated" with an ablative layer that absorbs a certain amount of damage. Anything that makes the ship harder to defeat. The Falcon was "the fastest ship in the fleet", and in TESB it had more moves than Ex-Lax. The ability to make the current YT-1300's zip around like that is needed.
But most of all, Smugglers should be able to smuggle. They made holds for mining ore in space, now they need to make holds to store contraband, and smugglers need to be able to slice in shields to protect them from scans. So much potential to be added to the game. *sighs*
If it improves Smugglers, it would improve the game. (That said, I could slap the Smuggler community around for some of their more recent "un-Smugglerish" behavior, but I won't.)

Chimaeran minds think alike.
