Thread: So, is 'guarantee' the new key word for 'power-up slice my weapon'?

someguy:"do you guarntee a better product when your done slicing?"
me: "Yep, between an 11% and 35% improvement... What I improve is random"
sg: "My buddy wants a gun sliced but he wants to be guarnteed a better gun when your done"
me: "It will be better, how much I can't say"

Off he runs, never to be heard from again probably to drop off the comp armor he was wearing in his primary character's home and delete the character.

I mean, how many times must I say it's random andabout 11%to 35% improvement?

Oh, and it's your buddy who wants this 'guarantee' and obviously not you. Why ask for a sliced wepon and then qualify it with the fact that it's not you who wants this 'guarantee' but some vague friend? Why start shifting responsibility to some 3rd party right from start?

For a while afterwards, I thought that this guy was just role-playing it out, or at least trying to. But he didn't even argue about price or act like he was unsatisfied with the transaction, as soon as it was clear that I wasn't going to do anything 'special' with the slice, he was gone and gone fast.

One thing I noticed,it looked like he was intentionally slow on the replys and questions. We were in a high spam area. /report onlysends the last 100 lines (I think). So if I did a /report on him, most likley the CSRs would only get a load of spam and 1 or 2 lines of his. Not really enough to nail him for anything since he did not come directly out and say anything. Only with the entire conversation could you see what he was asking for.

1st violations tend to get 1-2 week suspensions (from the people that I have reported).

Seems kinda wierd... All this doubletalk and caution. Its almost what Smuggler RP should be... Except that it should be the smuggler trying to cover himself more than the customer.. and IT SHOULDN'T BE BECAUSE OF AN EXPLOIT!

Someone needs to fix this darn exploit, and maybe someday this kind of cool RPish Interaction will happen with stuff thats SUPPOSED to be part of the game.

Well, you could give him the bennefit of the doubt. I've (and I'm sure most smugglers have) had a few people asking the usual "what will a slice do" and "will it break my XYZ", to those I've offer guarantees I can only improve their gear, and I'll never break, degrade, steal or make it blow up and kill them later. So, this means as a smuggler slicing I do put up such a guarentee, maybe that was what he meant?

Dude: Hey can you slice something for me?

Smuggler: I have no clue what you mean.

Dude: You have Master Smuggler over your head, what are you talking about?

Smuggler: I'm telling you I don't know what your talking about. Only thing I can do is slight "repairs".

Dude: Ahh I get ya.

Smuggler: Get my drift.

Dude: Yeah, can you get me a 30%+ Damage slice too?

Smuggler: *head explodes*

I did give him the benifit of the doubt by not reporting him. Some issue (RL or otherwise) may have come up that caused him to scoot. He may have been a pawn with someone sending tells as to what to ask and that may have been the reason for his slow responses. Then ran like hell once it was made known to him that what he was being coached to ask for was an exploit and could get him banned.

He could have also found another smuggler who was willing to do something 'special' for him and there was no need to continue with me. As we've seen, there are smugglers willing to do so.

There is one bit of information that I forgot to mention. I sent a tell much later asking directly if he wanted a power-up slice (then sent in a CSR ticket stating that I had no intention of doing so). No reply. He wasn't AFK, no 'Huh? what's that?' or 'I'm sorry, that is an exploit... '.

In the end though, my gut feeling is that he was asking me to exploit. I really hope I'm wrong though.

All I can say is….wow. Holy witch hunt, Batman. Some noob who doesn’t understand how slicing works asks you to slice his weapon, and you’re all ready to form a lynch mob and drop an “exploiter” label on him. Back away from the paranoia pipe, put down the noose, and go on about your business. How you can get that he wanted you to use an exploit for him from what you posted is beyond me.

Most players do not ever read or post on these boards, and many really don’t know how slicing (or other game mechanics) work. I’ve had lots of conversations with people like that one, it just means they don’t know how the system works.

I've had lots of people ask me if I could guarantee the slice. Alot of times, they just want to make sure you're not going to failthe slice.

Now, though, the only time I ever do any public slicing is while I'm standing in line for buffs at the C-net starport...depending on the length of the line. If I stroll up and there's 10-15 people in front of me, I'll display my tag and see what happens. I very rarely get asked, and when I do, I often get turned down because of my price (10k per slice)...but almost always, if they do decide it's worth 10k creds for me to slice their stuff, the next question I get is, "Can you guarantee success?". Asking for a guarantee isn't asking for an exploit.

And, as far as him ignoring the inquiry about wanting a P-up slice, he could have been busy doing something else...like killing Jantas or Mokks, or Rancors or Baz, or whatever his personal cred / XP collecting target of the day was...and he just totally missed your /tell. If I'm in the middle of killing something, I'm not going to stop to answer some random /tell...(though I do have a funny story that happened while I was actually killing Jantas the other night)...so I doubt he would either.

That's why the entire post is phrased as a question. That's why I posted the the situation and that's why I didn't report the guy. I also acknowledge that he may have just been busy when I sent the tell. I'm fairly new at this profession, hence why I asked. I've tried to stay neutral in this and maybe I've failed at doing so but I'm looking for opinions, not a lynch mob. If I wanted that, I would have included the guy's name.

That being said, for those smugglers out there that have been asked to p-up slice, how did they go about it? I've read one account where they say nothing and hand the weapon over and a p-up.

And please DrevenStrobe, post the story in the "Chuckle" thread if you haven't already done so, I need to feed the lunch hour addiction.

when people ask me if i guarantee the results of a slice, i go on the assumption that they don't understand that its random. so they get my "its random" speech. most people take that and life is good.

generally, when dealing with newbie players, there isa big gap in tells so i don't even take that to mean will i do the pup exploit thing, and they get my speech.

but that doesn't mean that this person you dealt with wasn't looking for the exploit so maybe a better way to handle it is to use /log and maybe roleplay it a bit just to see if they ask for it outright...then /report them

i would say you can't know for sure until someone does ask for it in blatant terms just because it can just be ignorance making them look suspicious
