Any of you seen the trailer for 'Serenity'?
I consider Mal Reynolds as a great 'Smuggler' prototype. Even though firefly only made it 9 episodes, I think Whedon nailed the concept. If you haven't seen them, go rent the only season's dvd. They rob a train, they steal medicine, they try to give it back, they smuggle a naked girl and a dead(ish) guy...
And they shoot a whole lot of people.
Good dialogue, great plots, and an utterly irascible Smuggler (or 3). Worth your time. Serenity opens in September.

Bad guy: I'm not threatening you. I am unarmed. *Bad guy sits down, all conceited.*
Mal: Good. *Pulls six-shooter out and fires.*
I saw it on the apple trailer site, but I see the clicky's up above. I can't wait. One of my all-time favorite scifi scenes is in that series. Mal's about to let Jane (a guy, don't ask) suffocate in the airlock, and Jane says: Don't tell them how I died. Make something up. (Jane had betrayed the crew)
I'm still ticked that I only ever got to see that AFTER it cancelled. That and Farscape... what nimrods control the media?

They're making a Firefly movie? That's awesome. It was a great show, too bad it was cancelled.

Firefly's a great series. Definitely find it if you can. I can think of no better cast of characters to model a smuggler after, and I'm actually counting Star Wars in that. :>
Dang it, now I'm trying to figure out how to recreate Zoe's outfit with in-game clothes. Curse you, Whedon!

I'm a Browncoat, as it happens(meaning I subscribe to the official newsletter and so on), and I've got all the episodes they made tucked away. It's easily the best of Joss Whedon's work, by his own statement, and some of the best scifi out there, period. Very happy the movie's looking so good and so true to the show. Very unhappy the advance screening here in Atlanta sold out in less than seven hours after we got the email about it, though.
Yes, Mal's a GREAT smuggler-character, as is his crew. It's just fantastic, really. And I think part of what I've always liked about the show is that Mal in particular is a lot like the way I write Kaitlin/Kaytlin in RP. Or how I am her to be, anyway. And it's hard to pick out one Mal line to quote above all the really good ones in the show's 15 or so episodes.
"See the gentleman up there with the big gun? Now, I'm not saying you weren't easy to find... but it was a bit out of our way, and he didn't wanna come in the first place. He's lookin' t' shoot some folk."

I borrowed the DVD's from a friend. I was hooked instantly. By the time I started getting to what I knew were the last 2 episodes and knew there were no more, I had a massive wave of dissapointment and anger. TV execs are absolutely unabashed idiots. This show was awesome and had so much damn potential its not even funny. It should have been given a chance. I have honestly never seen a show where the characters were as well developed and deep in just the first season alone. There are so many plotlines that could have happened / should have been seen. ARGH! really bugs me. I asked on the FireFly boards if there were a chance that if the DVD sales and the movie did well there might be a chance the show could come back. Someone responded saying that the question was posed to the cast and Joss at a convention Q&A. The response was 'not likely'. Because of the ego of the people that took it off the air, if it ever came back it would show what a moron they were. But, it was on Fox and they brought back Family Guy, so I personally hope they wise up. I'm really getting sick of good shows getting cancelled. Every time I like a damn show it gets tanked.
