Thread: *Smuggling* -vs- smuggling ...why is the Smuggler community misunderstood?

As everyone knows by now (unless you've been hiding under a rock), with the introduction of Jump to Lightspeed, the "Smuggler's Alliance" is now part of the game in the form of one of the Privateer associations. There are also space-based duty missions that clearly indicate "smuggling" in one form or another. However...you don't have to actually participate in the Smuggler PROFESSION to gain access to any of this.


Any time we bring this up, most non-Smugglers are quick to shout us down and tell us to basically f**k off. And the Dev's position (from JFreeman) is that there is in some way a difference between "smuggling" (small "s"), which is what is in JtL, and "Smuggling" (big "S"), which apparently is the Dev's future vision for our profession. Non-Smugglers just seem to lack the understanding to wrap their heads around the concept that this could be a slap in the face to the Smuggler Profession. No matter how many of us there are, and no matter how much we "dumb" it down, they JUST. DON'T. GET IT.


SMUGGLING in any form, wether it's "Smuggling" or "smuggling" should be OFF LIMITS to anyone EXCEPT SMUGGLERS...the guys and girls who have worked and spent skill points to be a part of this profession. The people who have waited since LAUNCH to see some dreams come to fruition.


I'm not able to join the "Bounty Hunter's Guild" and do "bounty hunter" missions unless I decided to spend some skill points and actually BECOME a BH. So, why can a BH freely join the "Smuggler's Alliance" and do "smuggling" missions?


What's that you say? They aren't *really* "smuggling" missions? OK...then change the name! Call them "escort" missions. And what's that? The "Smuggler's Alliance" is only a name? Fine...then you wouldn't have a problem changing it to "Free Trader's Association" or something along those lines.


(Technically, the "Smuggler's Alliance" shouldn't even exist at this point in the time line, since Karrde didn't actually put it together until sometime after Return of the Jedi. I'd have to unpack my books to check exactly when...but I'm pretty sure I'm right on this point.)


Bottom line...if it has even the POSSIBILITY of being associated with "Smuggling" or "smuggling", "Smugglers" or "smugglers", it should be OFF LIMITS to everyone except the SMUGGLER PROFESSION.

I am withyou. Posted a similar rant not long ago. I personally love being in the Smugglers Alliance and some of those missions (where I actually got to smuggle by the way) were exceptionally fun. But my bitterness was not worn away by the good times I had. I feel we got sold down the river too. And what irritates me more are the people (smugglers and nonsmugglers alike) who feel we have no reason to be upset by this. In addition to the way the Smuggler profession has been treated I think it is a travesty. If ANY jedi/BH/chef/DE/SL (add profession here) content was available to the entire population of SWG those professions would be up in arms as well. I don't understand why no one understands?!?! Oh well...it is what it is...

Agreed.

And if we end up with a Smuggler Mission Terminal with missions that send us in space it is gonna get real confusing.

The Dev's silence says volumes, why do they refuse to even talk to us? Ok they wont talk about a re-vamp till its on the table, fine. But not a word about the "Smuggler" JTL missions? Not a word about spice downers and auto pulls? Not a word about missing since launch text in our f*^#*n skill tree's. Nothing andit's really crappy. Our last correspondent quit our current one seems to be on a very tight leash (no disrespect Wes I know your working behind the scenes). We are being told nothing and loosing everything.


"If your not happy just leave" - I hate when people say this.... fact is I like the game SWG and bought it to be a Smuggler, NOT A JEDI. I like most of my smuggler brothers and sisters are peeved because the only profession we want to play in the game has/is and well continue getting nothing but silence.

and Yimaz, too true brother! i bought my game to play a smuggler, paid for it and everything, then paid my monthly fees waiting on the wacky notion that the smuggler content was just around the effing corner, and guess what, it wasnt! Now i'm at the point of being fed up and feeling cheated by SOE.I dont think there are many people out there that after paying for something up front and having it take way longer to arrive than it should, would just give up on the time and money invested without getting to see the final product especially whenyou have no way of getting your money back for the last 18 months. sorry for the lack of eloquence, but i hope you get my point

Grrr. I actually get afraid when people want to make Smuggler's Alliance Smuggler only. ATM I am not a Smuggler, I am going to level it after I master Privateer (a while away, sadly). What happens if they DO make it smugglers only? Would I lose all the work I've done? (4433) Bah, well, I just say make it Smuggler only, but only once I've gotten back to Novice Smuggler at least

you take the wrong side of the problem, we don't want to be a "only smugglers" club, we just want that the name becomes something else, like "transporters union" or "independant freighters" or so on, just to keep the opportunity to have one day some smuggler specific content with an eventual smuggler's alliance.

The best option for continuity and for people in your position is to just rename it. The Smuggler's Alliancewas created 5 years after the Battle of Endor and we can't even get to Hoth yet I mean, it doesn't make sense for the Devs to add it yet. It looks like they are taking what they think are the 'cool bits', regardless of when it happened in the timeline, and throwing it in SWG.


Not all waiting is bad. SOE needs to understand this and that a build upcan bea good thing. For Example:


SOE announces that over the next4 years they will be building up to the battle of Hoth Expansion by introducing small bits along with other content. All players will be able to participate in the events that take place in the galaxy. JTL owners will be able to participate in the battle that takes place over Hoth when it happens.but to actually travel to the planet Hoth and land on it's surface, you will need to purchase the expansion. The actual battle will take place 6 months after the release of the Hoth Expansion and will be a one time special event and usher in the time period of the Rebel defeat...


I think that would be so cool and absolutly rock.

I agree and I also think that if All aces, can fly a firespray a bh ship.. ( ridiculous imho) why is it that Any Ace can fly any ace ship and inparticular a Master Smuggler fly a yt1300??? IM iMperial, but a master smuggler Imean what better cover? so basically why can i fly a bh ship? but not a smugglers one? Soe can smb if they think im gonan regrind all that flying thruogh the smugglers alliance, specially when their ships are all poo, except the yt.

Actually, my position is that I WANT to be part of the Smuggler's Alliance, as a Smuggler, but I'm working on Privateer first because space is so fun
