i have been told that there is a secret handshake emote for smugglers, how have i been a smuggler for a year and not known about this
please tell me if there is
actually pm me it if it exists please as we dont want everyone knowing now do we.

Well, I won't PM it just in case others may want to know. What people are using is an emote. It shows as a thought bubble to you but shows as an "action" bubble to others.
%NT - token used for first name
%TT - token used for first and last name
Target the person with whom you want to shake and...
/emote gives %NT the Secret Smuggler Handshake;
The %NT will be replaced with your target's first name. If you use %TT, it will be replaced with first and last. I put this in a macro and hotkeyed it. When I see a smuggler title or even someone I know is a smuggler but wearing a different title, I will target and hit my hot key.

I always thought the "secret smuggler's handshake" was making like you were going to shake their hand, then whipping out your blaster and shooting them in the groin.

First target the smuggler you wish to do this to.
/shakehand;
/emote gives %NT the Secret Smuggler Handshake;
/pause03;
/evilgrin;
If you add the shakehand emote you will have a hand shake animation as well, the /evilgrin is just for fun.

The handshake is one of the funniest things about the smuggler profession to me. I always feel corny when I do it, but I get such a sense of gleeful pride I can't help myself the next time I'm interacting with a fellow rogue.

I can't get the %nt thing to work - it actually puts into the text "%nt". And I do have someone targetted - fiddled with this for a long while the other night and just gave up in frustration. What am I doing wrong?

Did You try caps? I always use %TT as caps. Mine are usually typed -
: performs secret handshake with %TT;/shakehand
/shakehand;:gives %TT a secret handshake
: performs secret handshake with %TT;/shakehand
/shakehand;:gives %TT a secret handshake
