Thread: An idea for a more dynamic slicing system
An excellent approach overall. I'd certainly like to see something like this implemented.

The first part is implementation of a slicing window along the lines of the Image Design window. This is to eliminate the headaches, and potential grief/fraud from dishonest players that goes along with having to trade the items to the smuggler. (Admittedly, this is problematic for smugglers that slice in bulk, I welcome thoughts around that)
A split-window for bulk orders would do fine. Basically you'd have a single, ID style window. The top section, which would be about 1/5th of the total window space, would be where the client would place the items they want sliced. The Smuggler would then select which items to be sliced from that window, and use the bottom section (slicing apparatus) to do the job.
To make selection easier, the Smuggler can CTRL-Click to select multiple items of the same type (weapon, armor, etc), which would apply the slicing revisions for one item to all. There could also be selection buttons beneath the item window to further facilitate this: Select Type (selects all items of the same type as the current selected item) and Select Model (selects all items of the same model, i.e. all DX2s or all Composite Chests, etc). Select Material could also be added just for armor slices, so if a Client wants a set of Ubese and a set of Composite sliced (Ubese for Encumberance, Composite for Base Effectiveness), it will be easy for the Smuggler to select each set.
If it's a particularly big order and the Client ends up not wanting to pay for some of the items, the Smuggler can cancel the slices on individual items.
Ignore that last part. I went on a whole diatribe on Grief-Prevention and trying to make the system a bit more robust, but I ended up making more problems and deleted it. Just forgot to snag the last paragraph.

Well that is the bare bones of it. Like it? Dislike it? Questions? Comments? Modifications? Snide remarks?
I personally like it, Dreven came up with an extremely similar idea that many of us have been working towards. We keep forgetting to put in the ID window thing as a formal part of the proposal.
I have no objections at all, this is the general direction I'd love to see slicing move towards.
that sound like a great way to go about it... and wouldn't be too hard, would it? all it seems to be is an extension of the crafting experimentaion...
- Allows customized slicing on different aspects of the object.
- Allows some selectivity, but tradeoffs to excessive focus.
- IF reslicing is allowed, which I feel should be, it gives non-masters a potential market that they lack now.
I can see a wonderful interface... Weapons sliced by condition, minimum damage, maximum damage, speed, HAM costs, range, range mods... Armor sliced by condition, encumbrance, effectiveness, and resistances... Terminals sliced by payout and mission difficulty... Vehicles sliced by condition, speed, cornering, acceleration... I must stop dreaming!
Side thought: A new factor should be added to weapons -- a "condition burn" factor. Weapons already decay based on some internal system; why not have some weapons decay faster than others? It adds another dimension to just "condition" and would wrap nicely with this proposed slicing revamp -- allow slicing overall condition or condition burn ...
I hope we're not all dreaming... Hotrodg's proposal really is exceptional!!!

Not to take anything away from this, but I think it's mostly stuff Dreven and myself have worked on. Dreven had the core stuff, the slicing experimentation thing, and I brought up the ID window as soon as it was placed in game. Interactive slicing process with the customer and all that.
Exactly my point, just going off my memory (which is admittedly suspect) the evolution went something like this:
The smuggler slicing expierimentation skill, I have no idea who orginally posted, it goes as far back as the game as far as I know. Orginally this was largely centered around tool quality and the many debates it spawned. Way back in the fall when promised our first revamp, Ipsecki was the first I remember putting forth the idea of slicing for things other than speed and damage. This was in a discussion that was centered around the personal weapon of a smuggler as an alternative to a new weapon cert that was smuggler specific. Ousely expanded on that idea and came up with the first version I saw of the bars for each attribute and based it off the crafting expierimentation system. Many variations where thrown around after that which resulted in Dreven's system he posted which was the foundation for this one. As I said before this is not a new idea, simply an evolution of others. And yes Caylin, you were the first I remember coming up with the window idea based on the image design one.
My apologies if you feel that you are not being given your due credit, but I was careful to say that what i was posting was a compiled and tweaked version of existing ideas. I pointed that out before one word of the system was typed.
