Long time Smuggler here .. VERY pleased with the Posssible future Smuggler changes ... was just curiouse to hear what other Smugglers think of keeping our tools as LEGAL Vendor sales .. kinda like being able to buy "Smoking Paraphenilia" in RL ..
Dont mean to go off topic .. but Slicing and Contriband should be kept Ilicit for sure ... Just curiouse on how our TOOLS would classify ..
thanks for reading .. all responses apreciated.

I believe it already happens in real life, you can buy the gun, buy the mod kit for the gun and then mod it yourself, making the gun illegal. Hmmmm. I usually make my own or find a WS or AS to make me a schem and run them in my factory, but I think our tools should be allowed as legal items.

Tools are tools and not illegal just because they can be used to make/do something illegal.
"Tobacco" pipes area great real world example of this. Nobody in their right mind smokes tobacco from them -- they're obviously for marijuana, but they're legal to sell, because they have a legal purpose.

I could go either way on this from an RP standpoint. On the one hand, they are just tools, and in most enlightened nations such things are not illegal until they're used in the course of a crime. On the other hand, this isn't America or France or Japan we're talking about--it's the Empire. I'm not sure how many rights we have to private property, the presumption of innocence, etc. I really don't know the extent of civil liberties under the Empire, but I would imagine they probably exclude a number of freedoms most of us take for granted.
From a mechanical standpoint, I haven't really thought about it yet, but if AUKs and WUKs were illegalized, I'd imagine there'd be a lot of buddying up with smiths or taking novice AS/WS up on your template. Or perhaps it would encourage smuggling rings--on Starsider we have a modest smuggler-wide chat channel, and I could easily see one or two of the people who hang out in it turning out to be the supplier for a good many smugglers who would find it cheaper or more convenient to go through them. I'm not sure how widespread that kind of network is, however. Furthermore, those handful of suppliers aren't always going to be on line, which could either result in scarce slices or the hoarding of UKs.. hm. A lot to think about.

If they can't be sold as legal items, weaponsmiths and armorsmiths shouldn't be making them.
I already think that it's pretty stupid to have supposedly legitimate crafters make an item used exclusively to make their products illegal.

true, but is there a legal purpose for our tools?

I believe the law on silencers is they're not illegal, but the instant you put them on a gun, it's illegal. In other words, there's no legal way to ever use one. So there is a precedent for items that have no legitimate use remaining legal until they're employed in a criminal act.

Silencer laws vary state by state (they're only illegal in about 13), but that's not what I was getting at.
In SWG are there legal purposes for our tools?
I know there is nothing else they can be used for by the player, but I never really read their descriptions oreven thought aboutthem beyond knowing I needed them to slice stuff ![]()

I've gone back and forth on this issue as well: Should it be legal to make/sell something that's only purpose is to break the law. My ideal solution would be to get rid of upgrade kits all together. Rather than use these kits, sumgglers should mis-use repair kits to slice weapons. I don't, however, have any desire to bring this up to devs because my idea isn't that interesting.

I have no problem with our tools being legal. It's the actions taken with said tools that are illegal.

They are tools. Just because there is no in game "legal" does not mean that they would not have a legal use the players dont have access too. Heck maybe clamps will one day be the key to making repair kits work.
dang typo edit

I think all slicing tools should be considered contraband as well and at the VERY least removed from the bazaar.
And, BTW, these are NOT just generic tools. They have ONE and ONLY one use; slicing. Any supposition that they might have 'other unknown uses' is only an excuse for leaving them on vendors and the bazaar.Selling crack is illegal and SO is selling parephenalia.

Well I think that removing tools will only hurt young smugglers think about your slice grind and how you got your first sets of tool?
Did you go down a back alley and find some grizzled old smugler to teach you the tricks of the trade or did you look on the bazaar to try to find some tools you could work with to slice all those locked containers?
I know some old time smugglers used only the tools they made when they mastered smuggler. But they also walked every place to hunt had no working armor and random buffs. If you take these tools off the market your crippling every young smuggler who comes into the game. Smugglers have a hard enough time getting started with out giving them addtional hurddles to over come.
