Thread: In Shug Ninx's hanger, the Smugglers did hang...

If you ever read the Han Solo trilogies, you would know about one of the Smugglers' passtimes when not smuggling.

They would all get together and tweak and trick out their ships, kinda like those kids that hung out in the auto mechanics class in high school.

That being said, and I'm sure this has been proposed before but I think that what Shipwrights do with reverse engineering is more of a smuggler trick.

It falls in the same line as slicing does, you take a component or parts of different components and juryrig them to make them better (Notice the parts are already made, we're not creating anything, just tweaking). So, yes I am suggesting that reverse engineering be a smuggler thing.

Before you flame me, I know that will leave for some pissed off Shipwrights and I'm open to suggestions on how to fill that gap. One suggestion isfor them to be able to make theirparts better because looted parts are usually better than a shipwright's parts. Make the standard looted parts so-so until reverse engineered, then because of the amount of looted parts to reverse engineer the high end stuff, the RE'd parts would be best over all. Shipwrights wouldn't lose money because their parts are still decent. Besides, they are going to make a killing on the chassis anyway.

RE'd parts could be illegal in the same respect that sliced weapons and armor are. (Potential for content)

Anyway, I thought I'd throw out this idea to you guys. Any thoughts or suggestions?

I like the RE system in Shipwright. It adds a bit of spice in to what would otherwise be a dull grind.

A little bit of variety and the chance at rewards in the system as it is are perks to what I would consider just another crafting profession.

Ninx's hanger in Nar Shadaa is also one of the largest things in my mind in regards to smugglers and their ships. I love the idea of the environment involved, yet I don't beleive RE is the answer anymore. Especially now when everything is live.

I would be looking more into how we could go beyond what is already there for our ships. Adding those extra components that set smuggler ships apart... and make them illegally modified.

Smugglers should definitely be able to modify their ships, and smuggle goods, and make worthwhile spice and.....

I don't disagree with you, Caylin, I was just going off of what the game currently capable of.

I'd love it if Smugglers had the ability of adding illegal hardpoints and such but that might change a huge amount in the game structure as to the coding of the ships.

I can't believe that it didn't really Dawn on me In beta, But the Process of RE-ing an Item is Esentialy slicing it. Except it's a Shipwright doing it and not a smuggler (and if a Smuggler were to do it it would only Increase 1 stat and that would be random)

Caylin (Or Wes) was this even thought of / brought up in beta? I know the SW got Re-worked so that RE was not a Full Line in Skills, but I have to wonder cause it seems like Such the Smuggler Thing to do.

Somehow, I think at this point giving us an ability to upgrade our ships in any meaningful way would just bring outrage to all the other professions (particularly the space profs).

That said though, I think I have the answer:

BIG GLOWING NEONS!

They's flashy, they're illegal, they don't impact anyone negatively, and they're so irrelevant as to fit perfectly within our profession (just like Booster Blue!). Ever see the "engines" on the back of the Falcon? Think Han rigged it up to have a gigantic cross-section so that it'd be more efficient in space, or because it had BLING-BLING!!, baby!

I don't think it would be that hard in my opinion.

Where we have ship components modified, have a new category appear for those with smuggler or even bounty hunter. That shouldn't be too difficult...

From there we could add the 'illegal' components or profession extras that could take up mass/energy.

We are more of a space prof according to the developers themselves.

I saw it as tweaking a car without adding some 'questionable' modifications. Taking the best of all things there and putting them together to make something new. We have designers who do that every day throughout the world and there is nothing particularly shady about it.

Removing critical safety components to have the thing exceed it's limitations though is what I would consider a smuggler thing to do.

Well, from the conversations or even hints and rumors, has this even been mentioned from a dev point of view? If this were something that was proposed for the future than I could be happy with the way it is now. This what smugglers are all about, making their ships and weapons stronger and faster , illegally, so they could out-run and out-gun anyone that got in the way of their smuggle mission. (Providing that we get to smuggle)

I like the spirit of it, but we don't have to take RE from Shipwrights to do it. We could have a special kind of experimentation point system that, much like slicing or RE'ing would allow us to FURTHER jury-rig something to push it past its limits. It would wear out or fail more often but with excellent benefits...
