Meaningful content-revisionsare beyond the scope of SWG. To address this, we've planned a "Meaningful Content Revamp." We can totally fit it into the jammed-to-erupting 2005 development schedule.
In the meantime, we're very excited to bring you BIG GLOWING NEONS!Ask your local Image Designer for details!!
(we've assigned GreenMarine to work on the Neons project until further notice)

I saw it as tweaking a car without adding some 'questionable' modifications. Taking the best of all things there and putting them together to make something new. We have designers who do that every day throughout the world and there is nothing particularly shady about it.
Removing critical safety components to have the thing exceed it's limitations though is what I would consider a smuggler thing to do.
Well, from the conversations or even hints and rumors, has this even been mentioned from a dev point of view? If this were something that was proposed for the future than I could be happy with the way it is now. This what smugglers are all about, making their ships and weapons stronger and faster , illegally, so they could out-run and out-gun anyone that got in the way of their smuggle mission. (Providing that we get to smuggle)
I base the engine comment off of how they have handled the matter thus far. I could easily see such a system being given to all of the other crafters.
What they intend to do with smugglers and our abilities though is completely up in the air. Modifying these things will be something we will have to push for if we want to have a prayer in getting it. I don't consider reverse engineering though to be something we should do. Tinkering is one thing, making illegal modifications or adding illegal parts to a vessel is another that I hope we can get.
The thing is though, that different companies' components are being broken down and remanufactured could be considered illegal. (At least if you wanted to put a real world spin to it) You are breaking down that company's propriatary component and rigging it with components from other companies. Since they did bother to put the different companies' manufactured parts out there, the corporate illegalities would hold water. Shipwrights breaking down corporate designs to make their own part for resale would be considered illegal. And I'm sure the empire has far more strict laws than we do.

Perhaps, but I'm not going to get into business law on this. It's just the concept of tinkering with different parts from different manufacturers to make something new is not something that rings as wrong as someone who removed the safeguards on the various mechanical parts to make something with absurd power that could possibly blow up underneath you.

Agreed. Again, we don't need Reverse Engineering as we know it, but you ARE right that we should get some sort of illegal moding ability.

Well, I'm certainly interested in JtL Smuggler content revolving around some illegal addition to our craft. RE really is the domain of the shipwright however and as Caylin says, it'd be removing a chunk of that profession's flavour and fun factor. As for the possability of slicing components in ships, I'm open minded about it, but as has been pointed out to me, at the moment things are set up and balanced in JtL, so our slicing and improving things could cause a real headache for the balance boys; having said that, it's not to be ruled out, but I know I'd prefer them to concentrate on actual Smuggling, with illegal devices that aid us in that available to us.
Edit: Small typo
