Thread: Smuggler State of the profession

Slicing: This is one of our best skill trees most smugglers make good money off this one. The problems with slicing are:
1. it is a bit shallow there are only two kinds of terminals we can slice and both have to do with destroy and delivery missions. What we would like to see is the ability to slice more types of terminals like Travel terminals, Bank Terminals and all mission stype terminals meaning entertainer or scout.
2. The only way for players to know if a weapon or piece of armor has been sliced its to have a smuggler take the item and attempt to slice it. There should be some form of marker on the weapon so that all players can tell if an item has been sliced.
Ok. I am going for smuggler (trying a second time) on the new FarStar server and I would like to comment on this one. I admit, I haven't read the entire thread so forgive me the double post.
There are two problems with starting the slicing.
1. Locked containers are just too hard to come by. Increase their drop rate or add another something we can slice.
2. On bloodfin, more often than not I bought a locked container at bazaar for 3000cr to find out that it was already sliced, but failed. Change the name of such a container. Or add a "sliced yes/no"tag on the items and theBazaar's description window.
3. Slicing droids would be cool ![]()

*faints wow a dev in the smuggler forum, that's twice now.
I am confused though, whats that quote up there mean? guess i am dense tonight, tired...
We can be confused together, Kav...
but I hope it means what I think it means...

That we're gonna bethe next class to get nerf .. er .. "fixed"?
(okay, perhapsthat's a *tad* cynical, but ... ) I'm wary of attention from SOE/Devs. So far, their "love" seems to hurt as much as help the classes they've given attention to.
"Please do not add experamantion to spices... I would hate that."
Yeah god forbid you have to do any actual work finding good resources so we could double the effectivness of our spice. Boggle. I swear some smugglers are real twits.
Tricky
You guys remember that time a month or 2 ago when they said they were going to focus on Smugglers and fix our class? heh... Ohhh... those were the days. They really got us with that one.
Next thing you know they are going to tell us that "gullible" is a filtered word in ingame text... And we are gonna believe them. haha...
I have ZERO respect for TH.
TH didn't have a job with SOE when that happened...it was Holo that said it.

so you went for broke too? I went to Chimera and my starting planet is.. Rion or something, this world was NOT available (at least to start, I've only been to 3 main starter planets) when I began my other character.
locked containers - after 2 months I have looted 3 total and I've been saving
Smugglers should be able to tell on the bazaar wether or not something has been sliced, SMUGGLERS, I haven't decided wether I think all else should be able to tell but Smugglers should definately be able to tell when they look at the item's description.
slicing droids, maybe make a 'DUK' Droid Upgrade Kit for Novice Droid Engineers
question though - Is the ONLY purpose for AUKs and WUKs is for slicing? Though popular with at least Smugglers, if true a very niche market, still better than some markets I've seen
I have a couple of suggestions that I'd like to see that would directly affect Smugglers, but would be a great help to just about everyone.
1) Terminal slicing.
I'm not sure exactly how terminal slicing works internally, but I have a feeling that currently when you slice a terminal YOU get a "flag" of some sort that increases the listed payouts the first time you access that terminal. Once you reload the terminal or refresh the window, your flag is gone, and you get the base payout. Now just about everyone realizes how useless that is, since 80+% of the time that you do missions, you are looking for specific missions, orat least a specific RANGE of missions. And most of the time, you're just not lucky enough to get one of those missions on your first try. I don't even bother slicing terminals anymore, because it's not worth spending 20 minutes just to increase my payout from 10k to 15k, when I could do another 10k mission in those 20minutes.
My suggestion is to move the flag from the user (if that's where it is) and put it on the terminal, and make it a 10-15 second (I'd prefer 30 second, but I have a feeling that'd be too long) timer. The flag timer would start for the first person to access a terminal after the slice was complete (to keep 20 people from getting the bonus at the same time). So that when I slice a terminal, I at least have 10 seconds from the time I open it to find a mission I want. Also, this would allow us to slice terminals for other people. If a group is running 20k missions, they might pay me 2 or 3k per slice to increase a few of those to 30k.
I don't think this would be too unbalancing, since we still have a 2 minute timer between slicing terminals. No group of 10 people is going to wait 40 minutes for me to slice the terminal 20 times for them to each take 2 missions. All it would do would be to make our ability to slice terminals worth something, and let novice Smugglers make some money while they're working up the slicing tree.
2) Underworld faction discount.
I think that one of the things that needs to be done here is to remove the non-human imperial faction penalty for non-human Smugglers. In theory, we are supposed to be going through a shady contact who is giving us a discount. So we're not technically going through the Empire's legal channels in the first place, so why would the penalty apply? Currently, a non-human Master Smuggler STILL pays more for imperial faction perks than a human with no Smuggler skills.
I realize that the Empire is "racist". But the penalty is just silly and doesn't make anything more fun for anyone. I know there have been things that have been changed or removed in the past because they did nothing to add anything to the game. And this is one of those things that needs to go. In fact, I think that the penalty should be reduced or removed across the board. This would help with the problem that the Rebels outnumber the Imperials by 63%.
wohooo ! Go Thunderheart, I was beginning to think smugglers were the class no body talked about. Kudos to our corrospondent for representing us fantastically. Your rock !
-Ceallach master smuggler/novice commando/pistoleer
oh my god! Kav,might TH be doing brawler (unarmed)to get nov. smugler?a dev is going toplay smuggler?!?!
wow, maybe we will get some love
You raise some interesting points, and I agree with most of the assessment. There are several reasons why I am not going to bea Smuggler unless things change...
-- The Underworld skillset is indeed, completely worthless. The things that you can buy with faction points in the first place aren't even worth the discount. This could be fixed by adding a value to faction points for ANY NPC faction, not just the GCW
-- Slicing makes no sense. Slicing is the Star Wars term for hacking. It's short for DATA Slicing. So on principal, I can't take this. What could it even mean to "slice armor"?? ... This is where we should have the ability to smuggle something. If there were active sensors searching for illegal contraband, a smuggler could slice the codes on a container to hide the item from a scan. This is also where I hope the Smuggler will become much more useful once vehicles come out. The SWG definition of "slicing" appears to be hotwiring. By that logic, the Smuggler should have abilities that other professions will not with speeders, etc.
-- I also think he should be able to slice Bounty Hunter missions out of their terminals and have SpyNet access through the Underworld skill. There's no reason why only gun jockeys should get these missions.
-- Dirty Fighting is nice for feign death and the KD attack, but I want unarmed moves as well. In fact, I was under the assumption that "low blow" was an unarmed kick all through beta.
-- The fact that Smuggler can CRAFT Spice is an absolute joke and I have no interest in it. No to mention that the way spice works in the game makes it next to worthless.
If there were content changes made to add value to Underworld or Slicing beyond the commercial aspects, I might care. But for now... it's just not worth the skill points.

Hi my brothers and sisters of the smuggler community.
This is the state of the profession thread that I have been asked to put together for Thunderheart and the developers. Below I will list the state of the profession as I see it and think most of you see it. Please feel free to let me know if im base or not. Dont feel shy in sharing your feelings.
Master Smuggler: We have the least amount of improvement of any profession when we reach master level.
General smuggler problems: Content, Content, Content. We are smugglers in name only we do not get to smuggle anything. The overwelming majority of smugglers feel that content is seriously lacking for our profession. We are the only profession that doesnt do wnat its name indicates.
Conclussions: The smuggler profession is a fun and well rounded profession the major problems lie in the the 2 skill trees spices and underworld as well as master smuggler not having much to show for it. The third and most bothersome problem is that we have no smuggler content to mention.
We want to be the criminal underbelly of the galaxies and right now we are spice monkeys who can fight pretty well. The addition of smuggler specific missions that allowed us to smuggle would go along way to making the players feel more like smugglers and less like support staff.
Well thats about it for now. Please give me and SOE all the feedback you can think of So that the smuggler profession can be made the best and funnest profession in the game.
Ok, my two creds worth, I think it would be much better if slicing terminals let you refresh and pick a mission, also slicing for someone else would be great "Think of the percentage you could get from high level Bounty Hunters" simply alow that the next person using a sliced terminal, whether the smuggler or not, is the one that gets the benifit. A good balance for this would be to only allow one mission picked to gain the benifit, then the terminal would automaticaly close and have to be re initialized, unsliced. Though I don't neccesarily think it needs to be balanced, we realy aren't an overpowered class (stacked up beside, ummmm any CH) In fact we are quite broken.
Also I would love to be able to experiment spice, I know that you have to spend more time getting better resources, but, better quality resources, should get you a better grade of product, just makes sense, of course the higher you climb, the further you fall, but you wanna dance, you gotta pay the piper.
Last, Underworld sucks, we all agree and the primary gain for Master Smuggler is an Underworld bonus, umm Ok, my Slicer/Spicer/Pistoleer/TKA, will do much better than a (snicker) Master Smuggler? (you didn't realy spend all those pistol xp there did you? You did? and Your a Rebel? in a Group that is trying to destroy a player base? Oh, you need to slice the term, umm I can do that as well or better than you, It's called a Mol Clamp, oh and you havea TEF from your group, umm BANG, your dead, LOL) ok, I digress, but you get the point. I would love to be a Master Smuggler and have it be cool and mean something, but curently it just doesn't. Hmmm, Smuggler? Maybe I could smuggle something? Nah, ok maybe when ships get here, but that's a Looong wait for us to be viable as a class.
