Hey guys, I was trying the slicing bit on armor and was noticing the same thing about slicing for effectiveness yet nothing happend to the armor.
Anyways I checked the ubese armor that I sliced for 32% effectiveness allegadely a week lately and low and behold the effectiveness was actually up on the armor by quite abit, did not know the encumbrance though to see if it changed.
I then sliced a imperial scout helm for 8% effectiveness, its base special resists were 5730 but after I sliced it, AND WAITED FOR SERVER RESET (which seems to be the factor of slicing armor and seeing the results), I got the armor's special resists up to 6189 which calculated to be just a hair over 8% making the game right for once on what it said. My encumbrances also went up and alas I didn't look at what they were at before I sliced but I know have a small encumbrance on the helm even though I'm Master Pistol/Master Smuggler but the energy resist is now 7189 and Kinetic is 5189.
Story is armor slicing works but the drawback seems to be worse encumbrance on a effectiveness slice. The other problem is you have to wait for server reset before you can see the fruit of your labors. I'll try to figure out on my next slice what the percent decrease is on encumbrance in relation to a percent increase on effectiveness.
Cheers

Had my tag up and this guy asks me to slice for him...so I agreed to. Got a negative speed slice that should have upped the dps and he says "Oh the smuggler boards say damage slices are better then speed". Someone please edit the first post of this, I am sure that is what he looked at. From what I have seen if a gun is close to the damage cap anegative speed slice atm is better bringing up dps. Obviously the guy didnt read the entire thread here or he would have seen that speed slices are good too. Or maybe people are still in the "Only damage slices are good"precu mantra.
So until slicing is a bit more stable and easier to others to understand I will NOT slice for people I dont know who dont believe me when I say yes you did get a decent slice.

Obviously you've never been a weaponsmith. Pre-CU, a lot of the time a weapon was worth less speed sliced than unsliced. Then factor in krayt or acklay stuff and if you got a speed slice you would probably lose credits based on what you had to pay for the tissues and/or bones. IE, a speed sliced acklay hammer worth less than the bone that went into it. Getting a 30% damage slice was getting the stars to line up and you wonder why they're expensive. Supply and demand, if customers only want high damage slices and you get a handful out of a crate of weapons, then yeah, it's gonna cost you.

Its about time. Finally having a dangerous and controlled substance has meaning and value again.
And I'm not too concerned about the slicing thing. Face it, any serious weaponsmith will have a smuggler buddy or alt to be a slice monkey for him. However, now with these soft caps, I think it may improve things for us. Nolonger will the greedy weaponsmith with the smuggler alt be able to sell 30% damage sliced t21s for 3 million credits.

Oh man, if you brought me your unsliced 6 mill acklay hammer Pre-CU , I would almost guarantee a 19% speed slice. But it was that once in a great while awesome slice on a hi-dollar item that the good weaponsmiths and customers remember you for.
Now it's all spice and no slice for me at the moment. I have my laser knives, clamps, wuk's and auk'son me but I don't take on expensive weapons unless i explain to them my feelings on the slicing atm and how I would wait to see how things are going to balance out, then if they want it sliced anyways I say it will be my pleasure, mostly they thank me and say they will wait (they probably go to somesane smuggler who will glady take their money)

ReSpec'd to M Smug last night and thought I was going fricken crazy until I stumbled upon this thread.
Thing that bothers me the most is that until there is at least an acknowlegement regarding the issue from someone of authority, even if it's to verify 'slicing is functioning as intended', no one that knows about the problem is going to want to slice anything until something until its confirmed or fixed. Meanwhile, my factory and house is going to fill to the brim with weapons that won't sell because there is nothing separating the good from the bad... its just all the same.
Haven't played in months and I was hoping to come back to some awesome customizable slicing capabilities... instead I find this : (
Hope someone acknowledges that there is a problem before another few months passes, no one can do respecs, and everyone drops smuggler and has to re-do the skills in another profession...
tis life i guess.

So far on all master level weapons i get 8% across the board and on all Battle Armor i get 12%. This is never reflected in the Item inormation screen though. So far any slice i have done does nto show in the Item screen.

"Update: Slicing calculations are completely wrong. A supposed 16% damage slice on a 387-775 dmg weapon resulted in a 416-824 dmg weapon = a 6% increase"
Just an FYI:
The slicing percentage you see on weapons IS correct (as of yesterday) BUT the increase in damage is only increasing minimum and maximum damages by the percentage amount applied to the minimum damage though! I'm not sure if this was the intended effect, but what's happening is this:
Weapon X
Min Damage 300
Max Damage 600
Sliced for 10% damage slice
300 x 10% = 30
so final product ends up being
Min Damage 330
Max Damage 630
This may not be the 'intended' effect, but that's what appears to be happening according the the tests i've done. Kinda lame and makes slicing for damage very irritating, but the percentage increase applied is correctly displayed.

I retract my above statement at which point i say 'the percentages are correct'. I have encountered some variances since those tests.. actually had a 0% speed slice that lowered the speed .05

If you ADK an unsliced item, does that prevent you from slicing it in the future? I've actually never tried to slice an ADK'd item.

What would make you thin kthat adding an ADK would have anything to do with modifying the slicing properties of a weapon or piece of armor?
ADKs are Anti Decay Kits. Have nothing to do with slicing.
Thats like asking if a range weapon pup will make a weapon unsliceable.

Respec'd back to Smuggler again (for some RP) and did a -4% damage slice on someone's Blaster fist. So, that would actually decrease the damage on the weapon? Yay.

But damage slices are better compared to their speed counterpart on the same weapon. If the statement I made was wrong, I'd be more than happy to change it, but its not wrong.
I am also refraining from slicing untill our revamp.

Just wanted to toss in my say on this. I just recently came back to SWG after awhile, transfered severs and found out I coulld slice a gun for -1%, -5%, -16%. Alot of other low numbers popped up and from slicing about 50 or so guns (which I bought because I thought my character was bugged) found my highest slice to be 16% speed. Im relieved to know its NOT JUST ME. Woo, bu hopefully its fixed soon.
