Smuggler Archive
Thread: My simple, honest, and heartfelt question for any DEV willing to answer.
After slicing my 150th crystal ball to complete a little force sensitivity expfor my smuggler i get "future 4 years", wow this is the first future i've received!
The message reads.
The Dev Team here;
Well everyone it has been a fun ride, and i would like to congradulat all the players who became part of the Jedi Council. But with SWG II coming out next quarter we will no longer be working on the development of SWG, JTL, and JEDI expansions 1 through 9. Don't worry 10 through 15 will be part of SWG II. Oh smugglers we have not forgotten you, you will be our first priority in SWG II, but as you know GreenMachine has been promoted so as soon as we find a developer who wants to lead the smuggler revamp we will get back to you requesting your ideas on what the smuggler profession should look like.
Alright Green.
As one of the Horsemen of the Smuggling Apocolypse, I hereby grant you my trust on this. IF you DO break faith on this one, I'm taking as many player accounts with me when I quit. You just made a promise. I'm gonna hold you to it.
GreenMarine wrote:Why should I, or anyone else in the Smuggler community, continue to pay for this game?
Because:
- At its core, SWG is still a fun game. The next few publishes are focused on fixing major elements of what makes the game frustrating. Eliminating hologrinding, improving the Jedi experience, balancing combat, and introducing new GCW features. All of this promises to improve the overall SWG experience.
The core of this game is not what most of us who've made it through the first year are doing at this time. Masters of professions are removed from the joy of "oooh it's a star wars world to wander around in." That was the fun part of the game that is only fun for a finite period of time. The people you are talking to have been here months and months and need an "end game" that is still fun months in. I suppose you'll just tell us about the GCW revamp. The long term success of this game is directly linked to keeping as many elder players in game as possible, and not forcing them to be online, but creating content that pulls them into contact with new players starting out.
- JTL is coming. Jump to Lightspeed is adding a completely new experience to the game. It's a lot of fun and its very different.
Jump to Lightspeed costs more money. We're paying for every ounce of that new experience. The question is about the game in the current state, and your response doesn't provide much for those of us playing for the next three-six months other than bug fixing/balancing which is already needed, and would be the nature of MMO development anyway. You now have to compete with "all about fun" City of Heros, soon Blizzard "King of Gameplay" will offer World of Warcraft, and within the next year 3-6 more MMO's that have learned the "make it fun" lesson that SWG had to learn the hard way. These poor devs are already pushing a sisyphusian boulder up a mountain, and now we're being told that they just need more time to move that boulder. If we have passionate, hard working folk and we're told time and time again, "We need more time to unload the already full plates of these over-worked devs!" we need more Devs cuz the pace of development is going to quickly be eaten up by alternative MMO's and I hate to see the MMO with backstory and fandom unmatched, save Tolkien, fail because the demand wasn't met by SOE/Lucasarts. More DEVS, More Hardware, More instancing of key locations, more fun, NOW!
I'm not a smuggler but I was in the hybrid discussion and I, for one, believe GreenMarine. This man was in nearly every discussion I attended, even if just in the room rather than leading the discussion from the front table. Other devs looked to him for opinions and information. He's smart, he's dedicated, and I believe that this isn't "just a job" to him. It seems like he loves what he does for a living, and he's doing the best he can with the time and resources that he can get to make everything he designs that much cooler.
I'm really looking forward to what you guys are getting. Why? Because smugglers are cool! And because I am a Ranger and we are getting love after you guys... and wow! do we need it. We have almost as many broken boxes as you guys. But I still think you guys need the attention first.
Keep your chins up, keep the faith, and may the fo... oh wait. May you always have a blaster at your side.

I suppose time will tell on this one.
I, for one have no confidence in this statement, but we will see... Kind of hard to keep coming back when you keep getting kicked in the balls.

- Because we will do a lot of stuff you asked for. Better spices. Spice experimentation. No more pistol requirement. A lot more new stuff as well.
I would personally rather get rid of the unarmed requirement than the pistol requirement. I use pistols far more than fists - and I dont see us fighting anywhere near the level of a TK artist while we should have a decent ranged combat. I am all for a conditional prereq that allows for combat + any 1 combat line.
My ideal version would be throwing engineering back in, or giving 4 or 5 lines as options, and then allowing the smuggler to pick any 2 or any 3 - then at least not all smugglers would not be travelling the same path to get to smuggler. (similar to the new FS/Jedi progression - now that its done there we know they are capable of it).
This should be the method for all hybrid professions - give a lot of options and let the player choose the path they want.
BTW: even though its not in the sig, I am also master smuggler - and have been a smuggler in fact or in spirit since the moment the trainer was finaly activated in beta 2. I keep gaining and dropping bits of smuggler as dreams of something to do are shown, and hope that eventually something will be illegal enough to actual need smuggling.
First off, GreenMarine, thanks for showing up
JustG seems to have disappeared after dropping the bomb about our delay and his post that we're pissed off. Good luck w/ JTL, and i hope you get your own team to finally re-vamp out prof![]()
And to the bounty hunters, and jedi on our boards. You have you own forums to whine on. Stay the he!! off ours.
cheers,
Soma
Hi Green and all of the rest of my fellows,
so far what i can say about this all smuggler are so bad stuff. Will there be ever a balance to the whole system? This will be very hard with all the thingys in combat professions not working properly. But i am no person thats to say this profession is stronger than mine nerf the other or upgrade mine. The smuggler community is getting fewer as i speak but i am a smuggler as I like being one. Not for the possibilities I got but for the RPG part. Its really fun if you "life" your character and as leaders of crime we should do it this rule the worlds of the shadows.. Its always fine if the community plays along and you can bribe the votes in a city or if you are carnapping bikes and the people play along. Also its quit funny in a RPG-PvP Event. The highest bidder get my support or pays me for information of the names of docs etc.. There are a lot of things beside the ingame abilities. Last but not least there are friends ![]()
Looking forward to the revamp i expect a lot of fun coming along and that we have another purpose than to slice stuff (My fingers are going nump *giggle*)
I also had ideas to lift up the Underworld Skilltree as it would not impact balance in combat. As include shuttletimes int this skill. My Idea is as follows:
Novice Smuggler: None
Connections I: 25% less waiting times. E.g. 4 Minutes would be 3 Minutes
Connections II: 25% less waiting times. E.g. 4 Minutes would be 2 Minutes
Connections III: 75% less waiting times. E.g. 4 Minutes would be 1 Minutes
Connections IV: No waiting Time at all.
Master Smuggler: May travel from any star-/shuttleport to any other star-/shuttleport. E.g. From Ancorhead/Tatooine to Imperial Outpost @ Dantooine paying the full price.
Getting of the requirements... Hm i would think that these two are good requirements for a smuggler even as i look back there where more requirement to it in artisan. Even these seem quite resoaning. But i think the requirements doesnt matter as far as the results you get in the profession afterwards are good enough ![]()
But what ever will show up in the revamp please make the smuggler some bloody cool guy as Han Solo ![]()
Kind regards,
Cyric Rasczak, Master Smuggler and former Squad Leader of the Imperial Troops

- Smugglers will get a revamp. I can't say when. If I did, and we missed it, you'd kill me. A revamp will happen.
- No more smuggler B.S. No more announcing a date and not delivering. We're going to put together a plan for smuggler and post it here so you guys can review it. We'll have a plan determined before we start writing the code so you know whats going to happen to your profession.
- Because we will do a lot of stuff you asked for. Better spices. Spice experimentation. No more pistol requirement. A lot more new stuff as well.
If they do answer, another question I would have would be... why should I, or any other member of the Smuggler community, believe you this time after so many broken promises?
- No more broken promises. I had some very frank discussions with several smugglers at Fan Fest. I KNOW you guys are frustrated. We aren't going to string you along. There will be a revamp. It might happen after JTL, but it will happen. There will be a public plan for the revamp ahead of time (possibly soon) that you guys can start tweaking for implementation.
- I take this profession very seriously. I know its flaws. I'm going to level up a new smuggler character, myself. It's very important to me that Smuggler is improved and turned into a fun, rewarding profession.
What do the "Suits" think about the disgruntleness of the SWG Customer Base? I've broken deadlines, and if I was in a line of work that aloud to be canned, I would have. I'm not advocating any such thin over this. I'm curious to know, as an employee how does this affect your job? Does it screw with moral when a "suit" comes in and starts micro-managing, not to mention the Fan-Base getting more and more angry.

Opinions are not facts. I don't find mindless grinding or camping for rare items fun. The only fun I've had is because of the people I've played with. We can play other games, and we will.- JTL is coming.
Based on previous experiences, I will NOT be buying this "excuse for us to not work on anything else while we make more money" expansion pack. What happens when everybody complains about how you screwed it up, and now you have TWO broken games to fix?- Smugglers will get a revamp.
Hey, how's it going? I'm quitting.- No more smuggler B.S.
Oh, I'm not joking around either. I'm serious.- Because we will do a lot of stuff you asked for.
Well, you picked the wrong time to start doing that. It would have been appropriate several months ago, if not during the beta test.
Despite my negativity, there was so much potential in this game, but it's now obvious that money is the priority, and just like most things done for money, everything else suffers.
Why should I pay you guys to develop a game I won't buy?

we have no reason to believe what GreenMarine said, and this is true because the past speaks of what will happen in the future if nothing changes. that's why we say history repeats itself. however, you have to give those in the new timeframe the chance to be the one that changes things. don't attack the devs on this subject anymore. they answered the thread. GreenMarine's tone was that of a person fedup with being told "you failed". no matter what devs have done in the past 12 months, they continually hear from a large part of the community, "you failed... again." Green wants to make sure that doesn't happen this time and said we will get a say in the developmental changes that will take place to revamp the profession. this is how it should have been with EVERY profession revamp, but hey, better late than never. and this time if we don't like what we have we can say, "well i didn't expect it to work out like that," instead of, "gawd, you devs dropped the ball again. this isn't what we wanted!"
if you are still flaming this thread, i challenge you to rethink before you post. think about how your words will read and which direction they would push you if someone walked in and barked out those words. would you try harder? would you feel you have the support of those you are working for? would you become resentful? i know some of the things i have said to those working for our game weren't very kind, and they can testify that i apologize when i over step my bounds. don't be so critical of someone before they have a chance to prove something. we are all frustrated taht smuggler has not been enhanced in any way since the launch of the game, but we just have to continue to be patient and remember that the game is not fun because our profession is the coolest or has the most options, but rather it is fun because of the interaction we get with other people in game. this game is not for a solo artist. it is a community, designed to work and function like the real world. sometimes you need help, so you better have some friends. sometimes you need cahs, so you beeter take a profession to earn some cash to travel or buy new supplies. is it all a little tilted right now? yes, but that is why TH said to stock up now. when the combat rebalance hits, you won't so "uber" anymore when it comes to combat...
three cheers for you, Green. you stuck your neck out there knowing someone was bound to take a whack at it. now all we need to do is work on TH's answers for the 19 questions. the combat ad GCW revamps are close enough he needs to start giving some direct answers and quit poosey-footin around it because he doesn't want to give anything away. we have been waiting for a year, TH. stick YOUR neck out there now. Some of us are more kind and supportive than others. And from what i have read, your image is the most tainted and in need of a revamp. If there were an election coming up for your job, Green would now be considered the incumbant. Give us a reason to trust you, TH. We deserve that much at least...
