No worries....the real smugglers here are used to all the hype, double talk, false hopes, and negativity.

Anyone else notice smugglers don't get their own emoticon?

I hereby dub the "official" smuggler emoticon. Hey, what can I say, smugglers ARE cool. The kids with glowsticks just think they are.

(I read through a few of the preceding posts but was unable to retain much of the info. in them so forgive me if I add nothing new here or make littleor no sense...)

Summary 1: The key argument was over the impact of "visibility" punishments for ripping off suppliers or failing smuggling missions. There is a portion of the player base that desires PvP and a portion that does not. The main issue is the possibility of "involuntary PvP" or a player gaining a bounty who wants to be a smuggler but not participate in PvP.

My response: I agree with the whole risk vs. reward concept. Although I know I'm no good at PvP, I would love being handed my own head to play with by a Master BH if I've fouled up too many missions or just gotten too greedy for my own good.

Let's face it, the content of the game isn't that great; there's only so many destroy/deliver/escort/combinations of all three missions you can bear to do. I think the possible risk of PvP action is a good risk. See my response to summary 2 before reading on... read it? Good. With an inclusion of an underworld rank systemgoverning the types of missions you are eligible for (high UW rank = high importance missions with high rewards and high penaltiesfor failure) thesuccessful completion of missions where you behave and don't skim could benefit your status and potentially lift you out of the danger zone and possibly remove a death-mark.

In a nut-shell; you've been skimming/fouling up too much, your visibilty goes up, your employer decides you're too much of a liability and puts a death-mark on you, you can either slice terminals to try to scrub your name off them, live fast and loose and take whatever or whoever comes after you with good grace or you can try to redeem yourself by carrying out successful missions with no skimming and/or do other jobs, say a single difficult mission or many smaller, easier ones in a limited amount of time/number of missions.

What about normal players scanned with illegal items? For now, it seems reasonable that we don't add visibility for normal players. That's too much to ask of the player base as a whole. Later, we could possibly add a level of illegality above Highly Illegal (say, Military Class) that gains visibility. It seems wise to leave this area open for future discuss, but not include it in a revamp.

My response: What about some kind of system similar to that of crafters where the smuggler's tag is applied to each slice or spice created? When a normal, law-abiding citizen is scanned the tag is registered and the smuggler's visibilty is increased in proportion to the slice/spice discovered.

The normal player will not be aversely affected and slicing and spice creatingwould become a much more risky (and exciting) affair. There could even be a slice which might disguise your handiwork or the scan itself could have a possibility of failing to detect the smuggler's identity in proportion to that smuggler's skilland/or to the presence of a "disguise handiwork" slice.

With a "disguise handiwork" slice taking up a weapons customisation potential (just a little bit, say 5 or 10%) then a smuggler would have to put some consideration into what his last slice should be.

Summary 2: The second major issue revolved around the punishments for being caught with contraband:

My response: I remember reading a suggestion that underworld rank/status could/should be taken into account when it came to the missions you could recieve. Maybe as a result of failing a mission/getting caught skimming/being caught with illegal goods on youcould result in a reduction in underworld statusbeing applied in addition to potential fines, loss of faction points/rank, threat of death.

No crime-kingpin wants to be associated with sloppy criminals.

In regards to who does the scanning, I don't see why it should only be Imps who carry out scanning.

The Rebels, although technically criminals, are Robin Hood types trying to get the support of the general populaces and not conform to Imperial propaganda, whilst groups Like CorSec and NRSF would just be doing their jobs in scanning shady types.

A concession to make could be that scans not done by Imps or Rebs aren't as effective and the risk of discovery are much less.

Summary 3: The third major issue was that smugglers are worried that increased punishments for using illegal items, like spices and sliced gear, will cause a depression in their markets.

My response: My first suggestion (see above, right under the second bit of yellow text, got it? good) would somewhat mitigate the possibilities of punishments being incurred. It would not affect the player carrying the illegal goods unless they were the smuggler responsible for them which means the demand would remain unaffected.

What it would affected would be the willingness of smugglers to carry out the slicing, a rank system to slices (which kinda already exists) could be further developed with this. Level one/two slices could result in a fine or could just be ignored whilst high level slices (the really good stuff) would be more likely to attract unwanted attention to the smuggler.

Fits into the whole idea of "Oh yeah, I can do/get this for you but there's no way I'm doing/getting that, do you know how much trouble I could get into, do you know what they do to people like me in prison? Ask Thingy, he's willing to take that risk."

Creating a hierarchy in the smuggling profession of those willing to do the highly illegal things that are worth more, it's the whole risk vs. reward idea again. Also it will not affect the players who are capable only of making low level slices before they're ready for the big time should they so choose.

In regards to the PvP thing for consecutive failures of missions and illegal actions (Visibilty) could there be some mechanism by which the BH can appropriate the object in question? Say your job was to smuggle some fantastic guns and you decide to keep a couple to yourself, you get found out, your visibilty threshold gets pushed into the level where you nowcarry a death-mark, the BH kills you and retrieves the stolen goods or decides to accept a pay-off (one of those spiffy hand-cannons you've skimmed) potentially increasing his visibilty with the consequence that he may end up on the terminals. The old switcheroo, hunter becomes the hunted. Would any bounty hunters like to become targets themselves, being killed by another BH or killing him would remove your death-mark. Hmmm...

It is a period of civil war. Rebel players, striking from player reviews, have won many victories against the evil LucasArts Empire's web-propaganda.

because it needed devs that actually gave a crap about this game and knew how to do their jobs. Both of which are seriously lacking in the current gaggle of quacks at SOE.

So are we actually gonna get a revamp or is this just a bunch of talk??? I totally love the idea of doing smuggler missions, dodging / sneaking through checkpoints & actually smuggling things, being hunted by BH's ect.. thats what being a smugglers all about... I just hope they make it happen sometime soon... I don't get the whole ranger thing but ooh well... anyways, I haven't played my smuggler toon in forever because honestly, I got bored with him... so comon devs lets bring some life to this profession.....
