Solo,

I am glad to hear that others have finally seen the level of disrespect as paying customers, that we have been shown by SOE and the Developers. I have written many posts calling for answers, and even called for any Smuggler Correspondent to step down in protest, and I was roundly criticized for that post.....I had known months ago that we were being led on, and Lied to!!!

I will lookinto City of Heros and I am waiting for Pirates of the Burning Sea....All smugglers should leave this game!!!

Just as a side note, I have been playing a TKA , still a novice 2-1-1-1, and this character is more powerful then my Master Smuggler / Pistoleer 4-4-3-4.......I wish I hadknown where SOE's favortism was months ago, I guess the Devs play TKAs, Jedis, and Bounty Hunters

If I had stepped down at your urging, chances are yall would never have seen that announcement until the revamp itself. Sad but true.

I for one would like to say that I'm glad you didn't step down Caylin. You're doing an awesome job and don't let anyone else tell you otherwise!

26 August 2003 - Devs make their first detailed promise to overhaul the Smuggler profession.

27 September 2004 (03:10 PM) - Smuggler_Caylin tells fellow smugglers that he is stepping down as Smuggler Correspondent.

I wasnt going to say anything but after rereading through this thread a bit I decided I would. First off let me just say that I only know Solo4114 from these boards, which he always seems to have a firm grasp on what he wants this game to be. After reading his original post the first time I was like"Ya, me too , I totally agree, I'm cancelling tomorrow" But after logging in and goofing off a bit , made fun of some rebels, talked with some friends, some I know in real life , some only in the game. I realized this game is what you make of it, there's alot I havent seen or done.Plus as someone replied, this is the closest I will ever get to stepping into the movies. Now I have my limit to what I will endure as a paying customer, but I havent reached it yet.

So to Solo I say farewell and good luck.

Solo,

Excellent post. I agree with everything you said. I too have felt misled about this game since beta. Holocron use to post hypothetical /conceptual game mechanics as if they were things that would be in by launch. I remember the day they said they would include the smuggler profession. I asked Holocron how it would work... how would we smuggle without the game having player created missions. He then went on to describe customs checkpoints, the very thing we are now being told is impossible to do. Holocron did this, by the way, during beta 3. That was late enough into the beta process, that I assumed that if a developer was going into that much detail about a game system, then it would make it into release. Sadly enough, one year later that system doesn't and apparently *can't* exist.

They've led us on since the beginning. They knew what their customer's expectations were: "to smuggle". If they knew it wasn't possible, they should have told us.Instead they allowed us to believe that someday in the near future, our profession would be revamped and we *would* smuggle. They even implied that it would probably be all space based smuggling, as customs checkpoints at star ports would not be possible from a network / database structure standpoint.

"The thing is that smugglers essentially are a "space based" profession (at least the way we think of it)and giventhe inherent client/server limitations, its atough proposition any way you look at. For instance, lets say Imperials do a search for contraband at starports. Can you imagine the lag if we even did an item check for everything inevery player's inventory as they entered and exited a starport?" - TH

Saying that land based or space based smuggling is a "tough proposition" is not the same as being honest and saying "It can't be done right now."

One thing I think people need to consider here:

If we don't smuggle for player characters, do we smuggle for non-player characters? And if so, how much fun is it going to be without customs checkpoints?

Imagine and NPC gives you some spice to deliver to another NPC. Without customs checkpoints, where is the fun? Where is the challenge? Personally, I think it's safe to say that "no player smuggling" really means "no smuggling at all."

I've played since the first week of beta 3. I bought a one year subscription that expires on June 26th.. I've commited far too much time and money to this game, which is nothing but a bastardization of Star Wars. I've got a few months left on my account, but I'm deleting my character tonight, and cancelling my account.

How do I feel right now? I'm filled with a mixture of disappointment, sadness, and anger. I think that SOE should be financially or legally repremanded for their behavior.

Such a nice speech, but you blame the wrong company. Before you leave, please realise that SOE is the host for Star Wars Galaxies. Think of SWG as a paracite. SOE does nothing for Lucas except give it server space. The devs, hired by Lucas, paid by Lucas, on the Lucas Arts payrole. Lucas pays SOE for server space. The only thing you can blame SOE for is the server crashes during the first day of live. Everything else is Lucas' fault.

ok so i understand then that it is lucas arts that is the deciding factor and the main boss?. my point in questions is.. was it lucas arts that says nerf ch. lucas arts is the ones who nerfed bh, added the speeders, mounts and tells soe what to fix and add. im a little confused in this post. if lucas arts is pulling the strings and telling the developers what to fix and add to the game, then we all need to spam emails to lucas arts and give up on the wasted time trying to talk to the moderators and developers in these forumns

i am smuggler, fear my cork guns
episode II: i am no longer smuggler i no longer fear the cork guns or the delay on the delay for the revamp.. leave a message after the beep when revamp comes and then i shall return. but then maybe i will show them and do a delay on my return.. ha!!! take that soe (if they have not frustrated me more then i already am)

For some reason I couldn'tget on to the second page of this thread, so not sure what was said on there.

I can understand your frustration Solo and it is truely a sad day when one of the better voices for smugglers decides enough is enough.

I myself have all but quit smuggler.

I am having more fun now as Commando (the last bit of smuggler I have is feign death)

I guess I haven't quit as the player smuggling was never teh be all and end all for me. I just wanted to have some fun.Unfortunately it takes going to another profession to do that.

I still have 100k slicing xp saved up so I may go back to it some day. But certainly the "smuggler revamp" has nothing at all in it that I find vaguely appealing.

Its a shame that the "revamp" is all smugglers will be getting for a very long time, as in my opinion it doesn't amount to anything.

Hope you have more fun in and a greater feeling of trust in the developers of which ever game you play next

I agree 100% with you Solo...and may not be far behind you.

We have TONS of good and flat out excellent ideas posted in the main SWG smuggler forum. Sad fact is that not of it will be used for the revamp, despite the fact the Devs asked us for it and have been promising us that smugglers will be able to smuggle. That's been since pre-beta and it still won't happen.

Smuggler is a cornerstone profession in Star Wars and has sold alot of copies of SWG to people, like myself, that wanted nothing more than to live as Han Solo. Forgive me, but I'm a tad bitter about the treatment we've received from SOE and the flat out lies they've given us.

Out of ALL the professions, smuggler is the ONLY one that cannot do as it's name suggests...we cannot smuggle. Smuggling isn't slicing armor or weapons for others, improving your factional standing, nor is it becoming the local drug kingpin. Simply put, smuggler is:

1. To import or export without paying lawful customs charges or duties.
2. To bring in or take out illicitly or by stealth.

I've posted to great lengths about this on the main forums and plan to let this one die here after this post. As a final thought, imagine you're a rifleman that cannot use a rifle, a doctor that cannot use medicine, a creature handler that cannot use a pet, a dancer that cannot dance, an armorsmith/weaponsmith that cannot craft....

I too just now cancelled my acct. It runs out on May 18th.

My first master profession was Master Smuggler. I feel it had the potential to be the funnest profession in the game. After therecent so-called "luv" from the devs, I was sorely dissapointed.

I still feel the smuggler community is something special and goes past thesimple "misery loves company". Back when I was a smuggling n00b, I had some great help and support from this group; through all the pistol xpto container hell.

Will I return? Well, will the devs actually give us "luv"? Fool me once, shame on you. Fool me twice, shame on me.

Bye.

/bump (always wanted to do that)

In all seriousness, while I am personally not leaving the game, and I would hope that others would still enjoy their gaming experience enough to continue, there are several valid points in here.

Like I said, I have no desire to encourage anyone else to leave this game. Now that I've jumped on board this shuttle, I can't imagine abandoning the fight. And the satisfaction once we have a genuine, wanted, needed, loved, SWG necessary profession that provides more content for other players outside our own board.... lets just say when we win, the brandy will be a flowin' from every smuggler in every cantina in this game.

Ok, need to keep on subject. Since Caylin has asked to present our "definition" of PC vs. NPC smuggling, and that post being linked to TH so HE can finally understand it, I dug this post up incase TH might be interested in why one very respected and elder statesman of this profession finally left the gamme. Perhaps he would have time to read it, once he's finished finding out what "smuggle" means.

So, seeing as how I'm now allowed to post again, however briefly, I figured I'd make the most of it and add to this thread.

It's now six months since I quit the game, and I've come back to look around on the boards. What I see is essentially a game that, for smugglers at least, has not changed in that entire six months. The space expansion is out now, and I assume many smugglers have purchased it, since I see questions relating to Ithorian armor slicing and such.

So here are a few new questions for smugglers to ask themselves seriously, before they decide to keep hanging on for the fabled revamp (Remember, that's been in discussion for almost a year now -- I believe November of '03 was when smugglers were first told they'd be getting love "next", but check electronicnomad's post on that).

1.) Has the space expansion changed the smuggler's experience? Aside from being able to fly around space, are smugglers in any way unique or capable of doing more than other players? For that matter, has the space expansion made the game more "star wars" to you in terms of giving a feel of being IN the star wars universe?

2.) Has the underlying technology of the game changed in a way that will allow players to smuggle for other players? Anything less than this will be pointless, at this point. The devs have had AMPLE time to develop a system to allow this.

The next few questions require you to look at something first. Look at my original post in April of '04. Notice that there was a discussion of the revamp happening back then. Now go look at a calendar. What date is it? Is there a revamp yet? Is there any generally projected date by which the revamp WILL happen? So far, all I can see is "after [insert major system fix here]", which is currently the combat revamp (but which doesn't account for the GCW). So, here's the questions:

3.) Do you expect the devs to split the development team to work on smugglers at the same time as working on the GCW or combat fixes? If so, how will that affect the revamp? If not, how will that affect the schedule for when the revamp happens?

4.) When the revamp is underway, do you anticipate that smugglers will get the full attention of the dev team? Or will the revamp be lumped in with other professions as well? How do you think this will affect the end product? Will a partial focus on smugglers be enough to get smugglers smuggling for other players?

And now a few overall questions about the game and SOE.

5.) Look at the dev tracker. What do SOE representatives post about most these days? Where is their time and energy being spent? Are you happy with this?

6.) Is the game providing you a Star Wars experience? Does playing the game feel like you're in the Star Wars universe, or do you feel like you're playing just a random MMORPG with star wars graphics and sounds? Are you happy with this?

7.) Do you feel SOE is honest, forthright, andup-frontwith its customers about the products it makes? Do you feel they communicate with you, the customer, in a meaningful, useful way?

If you answer those questions and are happy with the results, by all means, stick around and enjoy yourself. However, if the answers to those questions indicate that, overall, you are not satisfied, I STRONGLY encourage you to cancel your subscription. SOE will not care if you switch professions. They won't care if you post nasty threads on the boards or stand around the Mos Eisley spaceport and stage a protest (well, they will, but only enough to ban you). SOE will listen to one thing and one thing only: cancelled subscriptions. What's more, my own belief is that SOE has not changed since I have left and neither has SWG. Sure, some systems are different, but overall, the game is still the same. They're still talking about "just over the next hill" for pretty much all improvements to the game, but each time a hill is crested, the downslope doesn't look quite as nice as one might've hoped.

The SE is out now. Smugglers still don't smuggle. Apparently, nothing has changed. If you're having fun, great. But if you're not really having fun and just play this game to maintain a character in the hopes that SOME day you'll geta fun game....you're fooling yourself. Quit now and save your money.
