Scotch is an aperatif, you drink a whisk(e)y, (Scotch, Irish, Bourbon if you're an ignorant savage) before a good meal, wine during, dessert wine with the sweet course and THEN you some your cigar. With a brandy. You infidels.

if it has 40% or more, it is a digestif... means you drink it after meal. But you are perfectly right about the ... wait a minute... brandy? Make that cognac, you brute!

Hey, it's a cognac if it's french. I don't give a damn where it comes from and will happily drink Calvados at the end of a meal. Brandy is far less specific.

Yeah, but would you drink calvados to a good cigar?

Oh yes, Calvados accompanies a really good cigar perfectly. So does Armagnac. Specifying cognac is wasting the opportunity to experience these delights.
True and bizarre story.
A while ago, i had dinner with a few friends. To finish, i choe a 12 year-old reserve Calvados. One of my companions chose a 14- year old Armagnac. After a few sups, she decided she'd had enough to drink that with that meal and offered her brandy to me. I accepted and without thinking, tipped into my own glass.
The horror at the table!
And then i tried it.
It was fantastic. Without doubt the richest, smoothest, most delicately balanced brandy i've ever had.
Not that i recommend you blow that amount of money on trying it out, but the fact remains one can limit onesself too far.
