however, i've been a Smuggler since 2003, so if i start posting more and more in the near future, please know i'm not some young upstart

I think there's a few factors that will determine exactly how FOTM Smuggler truly becomes. If the revamp is released relatively soon after CURB hits, all the revamped combat professions will still have most of their luster on, and we'll be left alone for the most part. Unless, of course, "we pwn post-CURB." I don't see us being hit hard by the 1337 d00ds because we're primarily a support role, not a profession that racks up the body count. And if the CURB does it's job right, grinding will be a more difficult (yet enjoyable) process. While powergamers will find ways to zip through it, if we're lucky, they'll still be trying to figure out what the ultimate template is around the time our revamp hits.
Also, while I really like the ideas for the new slicing interface, it's not exactly the most time-efficient model. And since the FOTM crowd want everything and they want it NOW, they'll get frustrated and give it up. I also see a few bans coming from those 1337s jacking other players' weapons during slicing, because they think that's what Smugglers do, and they might gain an advantage. So if you're going to be interested in slicing post-revamp, make sure you have a good, solid clientbase that will vouch for your honesty before the revamp hits.
Finally, a lot of the attraction to Smuggler will be the credit return we're worth. If Smuggling jobs are highly profitable and easy, people will jump on board just for that reason. Think about the influx of Docs and Chefs when buffs started showing up. The difference is, if our Smuggling jobs, while profitable, tend to be time consuming, non-"Smugglers" will abandon because they can earn their credits easier somewhere else. They won't understand that the difficulty of the job is what appeals to us.
Of course we'll have a significant influx of newer Smugglers, but I think we'll mostly attract players similar to ourselves. Players who want a challenge, don't need to pwn everyone, and really want to absorbe the role of a Smuggler. They'll primarily be the ones who've stayed away because we didn't Smuggle in the past. And yeah, we'll get a handfull of jerks too, but so does every profession. To be same, we ought to try to get a lot of Rangers and SLs to join our ranks, and then when their time comes, go and try out their professions for a while. Spread the ignored profession, kindred spirits love a bit.

I was talking with someone the other day about the revamp and we both agreed that Smuggler will become flavour of the month, it's almost inevitable. I'm only hoping that it does not drive slicing prices down as there will always be one person who likes to undercut everyone else and not work with other Smugglers. I'll probably be having nightmares of going to Coronet and seeing about 20 Master Smugglers spamming their slicing services in spatial soon!

OOOO Let's make a LIST, and on that LIST, we can put all the current smugglers who post on the boards. And when the revamp comes, anyone who posts that isn't on the LIST, will have to prove themselves to be not a 1337 d3wdz0r.

I'm a nub smuggler right now, though I'm mostly in it to manipulate people with faction perks and for the evasive moves. I'l leave the actual smuggling and sliceing to you old schoolers, for the most part, because I'd rather have others do the dirty work for me and I'm not too eager to dance with bounty hunters wherever I go.
I'm well aware of what you all are fearing though. I was a long time Diablo 2 player and every time they would 'balance' a race, we'd get an all new godly character with all the elite gear they bought off ebay. Don't sweat it too much though, all the one week wonders might try to put on a good show, still, they won't have a grasp on any of the fundamentals.

Been a Master Smuggler since about 5 or 6 months after launch and all I care about is that my favorite (idea) of a profession is about to get some love.

Always keep in mind, there are some of us that have been Master Smugglers for just as long as anyone, but just dont post in the forums. Just my 2 cents.
