Well I started out intending to read this entire thread but there's just too much of it! Therefore I'm jumping to the end here so pardon me if I end up repeating something that's already been covered...

Personally I have trouble picking between option A and B. I agree, A is more realistic and more 'smuggler-like'. But here is my concern:

First, the devs propose to take away our ability to make spice, instead it will be a reward from 'smuggler missions' (we can also hope they change the stats to make spice more useful...all I have people looking for is Booster Blue). Second, they plan to keep spice and sliced equipment off vendors and the bazaar so that people will have to come to us directly. That all sounds well and good, finally we're acting something like real smugglers. But think about it...

Let's say you only have an hour or so a day to actually play the game. You can't have a factory crank out crates full of spice while you're off-line, now you have to go work for it. You have to spend time to run missions to get it. How much will we get per mission? Who knows, but probably only a crate at a time is my guess. These same missions will hopefully also drop the smuggler tools sometimes, so you'll also want to run missions to collect those. So now you're trying to do a mission but people keep sending you /tells. They want to buy spice, or they need the new set of armor they just bought off a vendor sliced. The first couple of times it isn't a big deal, but soon you're spending so much time replying to /tells that you can't even get your mission done.

And it's not just people passing you in the SP that are contacting you...people are searching the profession listing for smugglers. This guy wants you to meet him in the local cantina to sell him some spice, another wants you to meet him at the Dant MO where he is to slice his rifle. You can't spend all your time running all over the galaxy so you start telling everyone they need to come to you. Before long smugglers are stationed in the Cnet SP just like docs used to be pre-CU...long lines of customers waiting their turn. Now all your time is spent just serving as a living vendor, instead of being out in space dodging patrol ships or whatever it is the smuggler missions will consist of.

I know, you say "I'll just change my tag when I want to do missions...they won't know I'm a smuggler". Wrong. After the first few days all the people you've already dealt with know you. They've got your name on their friends list, and everytime their friends ask "Do you know any smugglers?" they'll pass your name along. Oh, and I also forgot...what if the spice doesn't stack like the tools do? You've got a long list of people who want to buy 5, 10 or even 20 crates at a time. You're inventory is stuffed full just to handle half a dozen sales, so before long you can't even set up at the SP...you have to have people come to your storage house so you don't spend all your time running back and forth to restock. You might even have to set up several houses to store it all, because of course you can't use a storage vendor anymore to keep it in until you need it...

I see this as a very real possibility. Smugglers could easily get bogged down so much with the need to deal with each and every customer personally that they don't have time to do anything else. I don't know what the solution is. Maybe a 'smuggler vendor', one that only a smuggler can place. It can't be listed on the planetary map, and it can't be accessed by the vendor search. Only way for people to find out about it is by word of mouth...you have to know the right person, or know someone who knows him. In other words, just like real black market sales are handled. And if they really want us to be able to feel like smugglers, give us the ability to place a cantina like entertainers can. That way we can set up our own shady little operation in some out-of-the-way location, a place to set a vendor or two down in a setting that makes you feel like you really are dealing with the criminal fringe...

A - Illegal goods should NOT be sold on vendors.

I like option - D

Change the requirments to enter smuggler. Do away with the unarmed branch of brawler and replace it with the business line of artisan. Then at Master Smuggler you get an option on ALL YOUR VENDORS to sell your smuggling goods.

For those who make no money selling spice, what the hell are you doing wrong? I sell crate on crates of spice daily.
