Thread: publish 17....
The Devs have stated a number of times, regarding why this or that came out before that other things, something that's common in any large software company: they add some things in wherever there's time.
Software companies divide large projects up into small projects and hand them to people. Smuggler has been cheifly coded since its inception by GreenMarine, I believe. Now, we know he's supposedly hard at work on us. That's ONE Dev. Did they put more on the Smuggler project? Probably not, or just a couple. Why? GM knows the Smuggler code, how it works, what it does. Devs that DON'T usually work on Smuggler do not, and would therefore have to be taught. It would probably take longer to teach people how Smuggler code works and to iron out bugs that were made due to unfamiliarity with the code than it would to just let the people that usually do Smuggler to work on it, even though it means there's fewer of them. Well, what're the rest of the devs going to do? Simple, they have their own projects to muck around with, whatever those may be.
Multipassenger ships? Eh, so someone worked that out, finally. Remember when the ID revamp came out? It came out when it did because the devs that work on ID stuff had some spare time, figured stuff out, got it done around other projects, and it happened to be all ready to go just then. Nothing else was in the way, so bam. Make a publish out of it. Opportunity knocked, ID happened.
I'm sure this is the same thing. Some programmer has been mulling over the problem since vehicles came out, poked at the code now and then when they had some free moments, and finally figured it out and got it written. It may have been slowly taking shape over... maybe the last year, in little pieces of spare time. It's done now, it's something they and the players always wanted working and in, so now's the time. Nothing else on the schedule is ready to go, the art department's free, so they knock out a couple extra vehicles so it's a slightly big deal, and slip it in as a surprise for us during some otherwise pretty normal patching. They didn't drop Smuggler Revamping or anything else to do it, it just *happened* to have gotten done, and why sit on it?
Simple as that. Devs that don't work on the Smuggler portions of the game don't stop working just because "we're doing Smugglers now". they work on whatever their job is, and things that get done get published whenever they come up and can fit into the publish planning. Every revamp, update, feature addition, etc that was the focus of a Publish (Mounts, Vehicles, Jedi trials, ID, etc) have carried with them a whole bunch of stuff that had really nothing to do with the focus of the publish. Because, simply, many things are worked on at once.
In other words... sure, we were told they'd hit us first. this publish doesn't invalidate that, nor does the new feature imply that we've been delayed any further just because someone figured out the multiplayer vehicle thing finally. Time to relax a bit. Now, if they say "Hold on Smugglers, we needed to pull GreenMarine and his team over to completely redo Jedi first," THEN we can start yelling at them. But this... this is fluff, nothing more. The important part is, as far as we know, GM's still coding for us, and as long as that's the case, they can slip in whatever other stuff comes up that they want-- it's not going to really alter how quickly or slowly we get what we're after.
12 professions, not one of them smuggler. hey wow, jedi's in there...

1. CapnKate, true enough about LD/FD
2. I still see your point, but you are talking patches. This isn't a patch, isn't even a mini-publish. It's a full publish. Which I believe was the proposed "soon (tm)" for the slicing revamp.
3. Ackehace, anyone can use camo kits? Maybe you haven't heard about the Devs' distinction between Smuggling and smuggling. The latter being something EVERYONE can do, without any prerequisite Smuggler skills. It's also the ONLY form of smugglingin thegame right now.Rangers are still crafting the kits right? That's one level more involved than we are to smuggling. We've been dealing with that little issue for quite some time now. In fact, pretty much any problem a profession can come here and say, "Well look what happened to us/them" has happened, or is happening, or will happen to Smugglers. It's the fundamental Law of Smugglery.
Any bug, nerf, or imbalance that can be applied, will be applied to Smuggler, without good reason, and without explanation, or even mention
I think Stephen Hawking came up with it, not sure.
Good point. I'd only point out that we were told they'd be adressing each profession in it's own little revamp after they work "some" kinks out of the CU and RotW, and smuggler would be first. Even given that the new vehicle stuff is a major sort of feature thing, they still haven't broken that. A few tweaks to other professions ahead of our revamp is a lot different than another prof revamp ahead of ours. I just see the profession notes here as being those tweaks and kinks they said they'd be working on first, I guess.
Mostly, though... I just want to say that it's not time to get our the pitchforks. Yet.
There's priority, and then there's priority. I could care less about priority for the little things if thee's a big thing coming, so long as I can play my class to some extent... and Smuggler's more playable by itself than I remember it EVER being.

and no revamp yet... uh... Wes... whats up? i thought we were first
Yep the Revamp will happen with the Devs just magicly waving a Magic wand around. No real work needed.
Most bugs and fixed we got in P17 are stuffs that are easy to do and not time consuming compared to something as big as the Smugler Upgrade.

No one is suggesting that. They have had nearly two years now.

I expect the Jedi FRS Revamp to go life as fast as the Battlefields Revamps went live.
Well, they were thinking of doing that to smugglers, too. But that would require having useful skills to begin with.

well at least you did not get hit with the biggest nerf ever.... Poor Squad Leaders from barely worthwhile to worthless in 10 easy words....
check out what happened to Squad Leaders and Rangers
- removal of the main abilities of a SL command(and pretty much the only reason people grouped with them)
- removal of a core principle of Ranger and giving it to the community at large...
If this is simply a case of "working on it but it isn't done yet," then that means they have a scheduled due-date. If they have a planned due-date for the smuggler revamp (however many stages it is coming in), then simply tell us.
As their clients, it is not too much to ask that they keep us posted on their progress.
