People using this arguementagainst others wanting things that Han just so happened to have is one of the pansiest things I've ever heard. Let's take the thread "Wes, please help us get our gun back!" as an example, since this has become the "I can't come up with a good counter point and want to post" response everyone seems to be using there now. Myself and others have posted how the DL-44, while popularized in the movies and such by Han, was actually documented to be a fairly popular pistol in the underworld. We have posted this as the reason that we believe smugglers should be able to use the weapon. By that same argument then BH could make a claim for it, could you acceptthat? What do we get as a response? "Don't be a Han clone, Be your own smuggler". Ok, so as I said above, I'm supposed to be my own Smuggler and not pursue something I want by listening to you? Or for god's sake, quit accusing us of being bloody Hot Topic Are you a human male smuggler?Oh, I'm sorry you must be a Han clone. "Be your own smuggler". Are you a smuggler that has done Jabba's themepark? You don't have to work for Jabba you know. Oh, I'm sorry you must be a Han clone. "Be your own smuggler". Are you people getting the picture yet of how stupid this cattle mentality that has developed is? I think you are reading FAR to into the 'be your own smuggler' thing. It's just the demanding theings cause 'han had it' that bothers me. I don't care what race or what themepark you have. As for calling it a cattle mentality, /hi5 for your maturity as well. good on ya.

To add more logic to disrupt your reasoning, yes Han was not a "successful smuggler" in many ways. But how can you prove that he wasn't representative of smuggler's as a group? Actually by reading many EU books I can say that there are as many types of smugglers are there are jedi in SWG. By this I mean if you were involved in activities that might be considered illegal, wouldn't you want a gun that provided one heck of a punch for those armored goons/troopers that you might encounter during your various activities? and it looks like we are getting that Sounds like you would want a heavy blaster pistol for this. Oh wait, what is the most documented well known heavy blaster pistol, one that you can depend on when it counts? Hm... I've heard the Blastech DL-44 is the standard, might be good to find one of those. There you have it, all the reason a smuggler needs to want a DL-44. Why Han probably got a DL-44 in fact. Could have been a factor. Does it mean we want it to be like Han? Nope, not at all. Smuggler's needed a powerful gun to survive, the gun with the reputation was the DL-44, that's good enough for my character. That's good, but there are other guns that may have been as powerfull. I'm just saying it seems a trifiling issue to get worked up about. My character in game is much different than Han when it comes to backstory and personality. I refuse to ship spice and if I had to define my character by another known character, I would probably define him as a smuggler along thelines of Mirax Terrik. I obtain rare objects(which just so happen to be illegal under Imperial Law) and"find/obtain things"other need thingsfor people.the only things that are close are the DL-44 that I carry and that I have a YT-1300. They YT I only have since I wanted a multiplayer ship and that's what you get with Master Pilot. In reality though, I only went Neutral Pilot because I wanted the non-factioned ships for my character (so they can be more of a personal ship), getting the YT was just how it ended up. But wait I've been doing it all wrong.Since I havea YT and like DL-44s, I must be a Han clone. "Be your own smuggler". At least according to the current "Smuggler Bandwagon" I'm just a clone. /sigh, not what I mean by 'be your own smuggler. at all.

I'm sorry for the rant, but I find the whole situation very hypocritical. Be my own smuggler by listening to what you tell me not to do, ha. There are reasons for people wanting things that Han had other than "being a Han clone". I'm sorry that some peoplejust can't understand that and choose to dismiss it that way. Finally, this rant was not directed at fishbrains exclusively (he's been a strong part of the community for quite a while and I respect that), he just putthe target on himself by making this thread. just as my reply is not intended as a personal attack. well except for the maturity part. I got a little steamed there. anyhoo peace and all. let's focus on teh love and teh money. /kowtow

hmm...

i think the whole idea of "be your own smuggler" is the promotion of diversity among players in this game.

the devs put these weapon certs in various spots to create diversity among what we see in the game.

the DL44 was a great gun, but there were other great guns. and it's not like the devs kept the DL44 down in the ranks of pistols. they made the top end version of it! it's in the game! it's there if you want it.

and with the amount of skillpoints we have, smugglers can still get the powerful version of the DL44 if they want to.

but they'll have to make a choice if they want to use that gun.

choices and consequences. that's what a game like this should be all about.

Drakoon, it's possible to be into a lot of the same things Han was and not be a Han clone, and I think most of the people posting here realize as much. The difference comes in the motivation: are you in love with the DL-44 because Han had one (which is a perfectly legitimate reason--but not enough to justify it as necessary for the entire profession), or because, like you, you know there's a long and strong use of the DL-44 in the underworld? Do you fly a YT-1300 because it's the Millennium Falcon, or because it's a great cargo ship? (Or because you're your own man, baby, and to hell with this war?)

Even if you're only a smuggler because Han Solo was that dirty of a dude, I'm not going to think any less of you for it: you're still a smuggler, going through the same things we're going through, coming from the same place.

But it's when a debate or line of thought gets too Han-centric that things get problematic. As smugglers, we're about as diverse a group as there is, and to argue for something based solely on the actions and appearance of the movies' most charismatic smuggler is a dangerous practice. We don't want to start limiting ourselves to a single role model.. great as he may be.

That's the heart of what Fish and others are getting at, I think. I don't think they're trying to enforce a "Be an individual by doing exactly what I say" mentality.

Well, I'm not a smuggler because of Han. While I don't actually roleplay per say, I like to come up with well fleshed out characters (I used todo a lot of creative writing). When I came up with this character, It was essentially putting me "into the Star Wars universe".As I mentioned, I would probably not even have a YT if there were more options to multiplayer ships when you reach Master Pilot. I coulddo a whole point on the background of my character to showhow unique he actually isthough andI don't want to besidetracked by the point at hand.

My point is essentially what you are saying though, people should be the smugglers they want to be and not worry about what anyone else wants. Telling someone that something is too "Han-centric"(going to borrow your term if you don't mind)and using that as an arguement as why we shouldn'tneed/want something, whenin the same post telling them to "Be your own smuggler" is hypocritical. Even saying things are Han-centric is limiting in it's own right. Yes Han used certain things. But how did he make his choices in the first place? I'd wager it was based on need and things he heard and decided to go with. There were probably many smugglers using the DL-44 before Han. Han probably heard what a quality pistol it was for getting out of tight situations. People saying someone is a clone just because they happen to want the same thing whenthey don't know their reasoning is ignorance plain and simple. Using this rational to say a thread should be closed or it's not important are arrogant. If you don't want something everyone else does and don't understand why they want it, it's just plain disrespectful to dismiss them asa "clone" and tell them a bandwagon statement over and over. That's my point.

I'll start off by admitting I was a bit ticked off aswelland have cooled down some. Finding people being called "Han Clones" and such just because they wanted DL-44s to be a smuggler weapon along with "Be your own Smuggler" seemingly pasted repeatedly in a thread where people were simply voicing what they wanted to see was extremely disrespectful in my mind and enough to tick me off. I'll address your points though (didn't make it easy by putting text in my text).

-The hypocritcal part, in my mind, is telling some to not be a certain way and then tell them to "be your own smuggler". As admitted above, the primary thing that set me off about this is that it was pasted all over a thread where people were simply speaking up for what they wanted.

-The saying people only want it because Han had it is a misnomer though. Sure some people want it for that reason, but whenever someone says that they like/want something that Han just happened to have also, it gets old . Especially when you don't know their entire rational for wanting said item.Calling people "Han Clones" most often is a put down. It's often used to make someone seem as "less of a true smuggler" than the person who says it.

- Yes, due to the nature of the pistol, I would have no problem with the BHs having it as well. I'm almost done eating, but am going to try to find a source I know I have. It mentions the DL-44 being restricted in serveral systems (or something along those lines) and as a result, often being carried by those that are part of the "underworld". Please don't take this as an exact quote however. I'll try to find the exact info shortly

-Not sure what you mean by the "Hot Topic". I was attempting to point out how stupid it was to use the rational being used as a reason not to get something or dismiss someone else's thoughts.

- It is a cattle mentality when everyone just jumps on the bandwagon and start labeling people because they want certain things. That is what people have been doing with the line in threads. I don't need to see the same huge red text 10 times on a page. If you actually don't like it, say why. There's no need tobe disrespectful/dismissive to others thoughts and ideas.

- Grouped these two points together because the answers to both work well together. Yes there are many different types of smugglers. If there is only one "top of the line" smuggler gun though, every non-pistoleer smuggler will end up carrying the same pistol. Not much variation or individuality there.

-It may not be what you specifically mean as "Be your own smuggler" but it's how it is being used. As I mentioned, I considered it disrespectful to simply dismiss people with the statements made. Essentially the problem is not with "Be your own Smuggler" but rather the nature in which it was used (telling people not to be Han Clones). The telling people they are "Han Clones" has been a putdown that has been around these forums for a while. People use it whenever someone says they would like to see something that Han just so happend to have had. See the second - above for more on why it's a problem.

Once again, the reason you got the response is because you made the thread, nothing personal. I like the smuggler community and have kept up with it since the game started. I have many things on my plate so I'm not quite as active when it comes to posting as some. Seeing people be disrespectful and dismissive to other Smugglers ticks me off. I have higher expectations for how the community should treat each other. Especially after how long some people have been here and been through delay after delay. I think I hit all the points you made. If I missed anything let me know. Time to go find some stuff and take care of few things. I'll swing back by later and check if you want me to clarify anything I mentioned.

While this whole thing is interesting I have to mention a few points, and hope that it doesn't come off in support for one view and not the other.

Saying that "be your own smuggler" is cattle mentality is completely the opposite message. The statement implies that all Smugglers should be unique...cattle mentality implies that everyone is the same and following the same path as everyone else in the herd. Hmmm.

I agree it is not very conducive to stereotype smugglers who want things they saw Han with as "han clones" however we also see that in of itself as a stated reason many times when it comes to new things or new desires. It gets old, and I think this is what drove Fishy's thread. I do agree with not stereotyping these Smugglers though.

I think it is important that we here in this forum help nurture fellow smugglers out of the shell into the realm of possibility for Smugglers and not limit their views of Smugglers to that of only Han. This profession gets a lot population from people who liked Han in the movies and want to play something like him in the game. However, we know that he is not the only example.I like the idea of new people coming to this profession for the initial desire to be Han, and then learning there is more to it...and then being their own smuggler. I think it is important to the growth of the game, this profession, and this community for that to happen. In this regard I support Fishy's intentions.

I've enjoyed the fact that Drakoon has been able to stick up for his views and bring a counterpoint to Fishy's thoughts...we need the diversity so I applaud Drakoon for it. I think the point here is that as a profession we shouldn't limit ourselves to the one vision of a Smuggler (two if you count Lando) we saw on screen. When some want to claim rights to something for that reason and that reason alone...they need to be reminded to think outside of that limited view. I think Drakoon would agree with that. Drak did a great job bringing up his points with data to back it up in the other thread, so please don't think I am pooling him in with that group.

I have no problem with peoples wanting or not wanting the DL44. I only had a problem a while back when a Master Smuggler I know told me he was using the DL44 exclusively and (here is the problem part) that he really believed every true Smuggler should too because it is Han's weapon. Now THAT caused me to reply with "No thanks, if I wanted to play a clone I would be a stormtrooper."

Some really have fun emulating, in part or as close as possible, their fav hero. And you know what? It is ok. As long as they have fun. Who am I to critisise their playstyle choices? What irked me in the story I shared was NOT that this Master Smuggler (who is a really nice guy, that little story asside lol) had the desire to play a "Solo-inspired" Smuggler, it was the assumption that he was a "true" Smuggler for it and that others weren't. Like I would be irked by the other extreme, being looked down at for being too much "Solo-like" because of clothes, or my choice of ships, or weapons, or whatever.

This stuff with calling anyone that wants a decent DL-44 or whatever a Han Solo clone and shouting this "Be your own smuggler" catchphrase is getting old fast. I honestly wouldn't care if Han Solo carried aBowcasteror an EE3, I like pistols and I think the DL-44 is a very cool looking pistol. My character attended the Imperial Academy like Han Solo, but so did billions of other people around the Galaxy, doesn't make me a Han Solo wanna-be.

When you get an iconic profession such as Smuggler, you are bound to have some similarities with the character that is argueably the reason that our profession is even in the game. I don't think everyone should feel bound to being "just like Han", but I don't think we should go around spouting catchy phrases and degrading other players over it either.
