If we got an area root attack, that would be the definition of unbalanced. Being able to root one player is quite powerful enough for the sole reason that a person with a melee template is going to be slaughtered helplessly unless they shorten the duration, put in a timer, or put in a counter to Concussion shot.

i have to disagree. if we're supposed to be controlling crowds then we should be able to do just that.
the current timer on Improved Concussion shot is 30 seconds i think. the attack does such little damage that i feel it's already balanced well.

another reason the root attack is balanced right now is because ranged gets very little in the way of defense. with a root we can keep a melee player at bay for enough time to deal some damage. because once they're unrooted they'll get within the 6m range and start wailing on us.

if they were to make an area root attack the timer would of course be shorter than a single target root attack, so that it would be balanced.

Could someone define the term "Mezzing"? This is my first and only MMO and I've picked up on most lingo but For the life of me can't figure out what a "mezz" is or how someone does it. To my best ability I've determined it's a form of crowd control but I normally see that as "CC" so this leads me to believe that "mezzing" is a special form of CC?

Sorry if this makes you roll your eyes, but remember, we we're all noobs at one point... except fishbrains who was born 30 years old.

I'm not entire sure of the proper definition, but I think that mezzing falls under damage and movement suppression.

Well, aren't our state attacks area-of-effect? You can cut 20% of the damage potential of an enemy group with Intimidate Shot and 10% with the stun shot. That is a 30% reduction in firepower from an enemy group, and that is decent for crowd control. If Low Blow worked and Panic Shot was worth using, then a smuggler could pick out a really dangerous foe from an enemy group and neutralize that foe.
Of course, you don't think that an area root is unbalanced, but it doesn't make sense that a single person with a pistol would be able to root an entire army of people. Wouldn't an area snare attack be more appropriate???

i wasn't aware that our state attacks were area attacks. if that is the case then i wouldn't call for an area root attack (i don't want us to be god-like by any means).
many of our attacks aren't working right. from what i've seen Intimidate shot only affects your target and is not an area attack. i could be wrong and just not have noticed it's AOE though.

i'd definitely settle for an area snare attack, if our snare attacks actually worked.
the only snare i've seen work was from a Combat Medic. he threw something nasty at me that made my movement VERY slow.
our snare attack doesn't seem to cause any reduction in speed right now

actually i'd be quite happy to get a working area snare attack.

hehe it's ok. this is my first MMO too, and i asked the very same question the day the CU documents were released.

apparently "mezzing" is short for "mesmerizing" and comes from older RPG games, where a certain type of character was able to cast spells on enemies, thereby removing them from combat or making them less effective in combat.

so from what i understand "crowd control" and "mezzing" go hand and hand. it's basically the ability to affect an enemy in such a way that they can't fight as efficiently or at all.

Don't quote me, but I think I noticed that Intimidate and the stunning shot are AOE.

if by the stunning shot you mean Burst shot, then yes, that one is AOE. but it's a Pistoleer ability not Smuggler.
i'll have to try out Intimidate shot tonight to see if it is AOE or not (is Intimidate shot Pistoleer too? i have a bad memory hehe).

I think Intimidate Shot is pistoleer, but you are right, we are talking about pistoleer specials.

Without the pistoleer specials, we would just have the rooting shot, an ensnaring shot that doesn't work, and two shots that slow down an attacker's attack speed, but one of those two shots is garbage.

Translated that means that we can keep one guy from moving and slow down his attack speed to a negligible degree.

I'm going to judge the smuggler mez abililty at 2 now. With pistoleer, you can do 3.

I don't think we are a 5 either, I would give us a 3 at best. My idea of 'crowd control' involves actually controlling a crowd, not 1 target at a time.

I don't think making improved versions of our specials to be cone effects are that unbalancing. Have the basic be target specific, and the improved be a cone. This properly demonstrates better skill being used more effectively. It also maintains a use for the standard version of attacks in our hotbars. You would want both for those cases where you don't want the extra aggro, or there is one particular foe that needs to be affected.

I also think that there needs to be some increasing in effectiveness for some of the shots, I just don't see the trade-off on some of the shots where it would be more beneficial to just shoot for damage over shooting for an effect. Why shoot 1 target for a 10% reduction when you could kill it in 5 more shots with a damage dealing special?

There is a difference between being in a group and keeping things debuffed and "controlled" so the heavy hitters can manage the fight; and losing your own ability to contribute to damage by usingdebuffs that haveonly a modicum of an impact on the fight. Is the trade off worth it? Are the debuffs worth using in a solo fight? or are they only going to be used in groups where your damage output doesn't matter (in which case most likely your debuff output doesn'tmatter much either).

I would prefer to have aglaringly obvious benefit to using a debuff special over a heavy damage dealing special. Right now, I am not seeing that difference. At least not with Smuggler only, throwing in Pistoleer helps, but I wouldn't put it on par with the any "mezzing" class in other MMORPG's.

i don't think we need all of our improved attacks to be AOE. i think just one or two of them would be enough.
i dunno about anyone else's experience, but when i open my actions window (crtl+A) i don't see any of the lower versions of my abilities. i only see the "Improved" or "Advanced" versions. so that might pose a problem. also the icons don't change so it would be hard to tell if you're selecting the regular or AOE version of each attack from your toolbar.

i think the two best candidates to become AOE attacks would be restraining shot and reckless shot.

maybe restraining shot could become an AOE attack and cause all targets within an area to slow down (like really slow down so that it's noticeable like they're walking underwater) the Combat Medics have a thing that does this to a single target. maybe ours could effect multiple targets but not slow them down quite as much or for quite as long as the CM ability. (although this would make Restraining Shot redundant with Carbineer's Surpression Fire, if Surpression Fire was actually working)

also reckless shot currently makes no sense. maybe it could apply a state like intimidate in an AOE, but also give us a slight penalty like it's supposed to.

Panic and Low-Blow being somewhat redundant with each other, I'd say they should make panic a Cone attack (as it once was)

This way you would have a reason to use one or the other. I do not think that all of our abilities should be AoE. One of the appeals of being a commando is to make your combat specials AoE with use of special weapons. Still I don't think Smugglers should all have to be Commando's in order to reach thier Crowd Control potential.

So I believe the weaker ofredundant State attack should be inately AoE. This way we improve our crowd control ability without taking from the benefits of other support proffesions.

Examples:

Low Blow: Strong Delay, Single Target

Panic Shot: Weak Delay, AoE

Concussion Shot: Root, Single Target

Restraining shot: Snare, AoE
