In general, I like the idea in the original thread. But personally, I would rather see completely unique skills and abilites and not something that will build on the existing elite and hybrid classes.
Right now, SOE is still trying to balance the worth of a master's box against the utility of the rest of the class. I also believe that masters should get master level perks but one thing I haven't ever liked is for novice skills, abilitites, and professions to be devalued.
In the case of smuggler for example, it would be interesting to see additional items that can be sliced rather than just an increase in percentage. For me, the concept of different -- not better, has a certain appeal to it.

Cool feedback folks -
It seems pretty much evryone believes there has to be a viable alternative to the FS path for those that don't want it.
My view is that any system put in place has to be Profession specific quest driven - tho gated by other factors such as experience gained etc.
It should be noted tho, that Legendary has to be difficult enough that not everyone wants to get it - maybe even increasing the amount of SP it costs.
I'd also be very much for the idea of 'cooldown' between quests so that it takes a couple of months to get to Legendary status
As for Legendarydevaluing master services and products - that's an issue that would need to be looked atin depth - perhaps the solution is to give Legendary toons entirely new abilities that don't feature in the Main profession tree.
As an aside does anyone know if there are any plans to implement ANY alternative to the FS system?
I'm simply asking because I don't really want to to play in an environment where FS is the be all and end all of the game.

I like, but agree all current professions must be fixed up properly 'first'.

I still think it shouldn't be months. 2,3 weeks tops or else no one will want it, which actually I suppose is good. It could limit the amount of them...

Lo folks -I got to thinking about an alternative for those who don't wnat to go down the force sensitive path and this is what I came up with - as ever it needs a little work, but this might help balance out teh hordes of people who could end up FS/Jedi. Anyway, any constructive feedback is welcome.
Legendary Professions
Eg. For Smuggler
Your Underworld Quest might be to Travel to Jabbas palace and conduct negotiations with the Empire and the Rebels for Jabbas covert support
Your SlicingQuest might be to travel to the Geo cave and retrieve an encrypted data disk, which you then have to slice, which gets you a schematic for a Legendary Smuggler only clamp or laser knife for improved slicing results.
Your DirtyFighting Quest might be to pick a fight with a particularly tough enemy in a cantina, who will drop a schematic for an upgraded DL-44 usable only by Legendary Smugglers
Your Spices Questwould be to travel to an advanced world(s) and assemble the ingredients for a particularly obsucre spice, which then becomes a schematic you can use at Legendary level.
Actually, this would work well for the Crime Lord profession. I'm reading "Tales from Jabba's Palace" and according to that, Ephant Mon and Jabba started out as small time smugglers.

Early in his career, he was a gunrunner. Stealing weapons from the empire and selling them to the highest bidder. "He was thinner then, quick and tough and strong. Never seen a better fighter, except maybe me."

one, i think this is a great idea, but would have to wait
as for PvP based leveling, think of how easily exploitable that would be, cmon

Finally some other people who, like me, realize that this cross-breeding of normal skills and Force skills will be the ultimate undoing of this game
The different skills of this game made it unique to me, but I really see that starting to fade away as it looks like things are going from skill/profession combinations to something like"(normal)skill/profession/FS/Jedi hybrid or suck" kind of thing. They went all the way from no player Jedis in the game, to having to at least dabble in Jedi to keep your normal skills from becoming obsolete

IMHO"The Powers That Be"(TPTB) have made some strategic mistakes in terms of development strategy.
The investment in Jedi has been rediculous considering how many professions are broken. I am not talking about fixing everything, but leaving 2 devs to work through a list ofmoderately easilyrecitified bugs within SWG would have been a good move; both for the sake of the game and SOE's relationship with its customer base.
I think TPTB will be surpised when they dont see amass exodus to Jedi, they took a huge gamble applying all spare resource outside JTL to it. What on earth would anyone want to do Jedi for? the two or three Jedi's I know well constantly complain of the huge grind to do anything useful.
Here we sit as smugglers with nothing in the master box (how long could this take to fix?), and only half a profession since Beta. Surely at one of the meetings in Puzzle Palacesomebody put there hand up and suggested fixing the code before they add something to it?
Personally I feel sorry for the Devs, its not them who make strategic decisions regarding who should be working on what code, etc. No, its the producers, marketing and finance men who decide. You could see this with the enthusiasm of Green Marine's smuggler revamp posts; the guy loves the profession. Then he dissapeared, not hearing anything from him, I think was very telling.
So... We live with it for now; but remember to cut the Devs some slack, they are not the decision makers at Puzzle Palace, no, it appears Excel is used a lot more than the C compiler...

Then why would anyone go force sensitive if they can just take the legendary profs which you can get a lot quicker than force sensitive skills. Force sensitive is a reward for people who grind out millions upon millions of experience. There should be no alternative for people not wanting to get force sensitive because not everyone will have it. What you have suggested wouldn't be very hard to get while the force sensitive abilities take a signifigant amount of time. If you don't want to pursue force sensitive, then you should get no bonuses.

Sorry, have to reply to the last post by Teioh
I'm not saying someone witha legendary prof should be anyhting like a FS or Jedi - what I'm saying is it involves people who don't see their character as FS in the ongoing game. It expands the scope of the game.
The current FS system is now the endgame - but it ignores the original professions completely - it's also a licence for min/max games and munchkins to exploit a game system that's already too easy to exploit.
I don't have any porblme with people pursuing FS and Jedi - but there needs to be an alternative.
Because if there isn't 6 months from now 75% of people will be FS, and the other 25% will be working towards it to compete or leaving.
Feel free to disagree - but I think it's not healthy for the game.

*wonders how long it'll be before the name of the game is changed to Jedi Online*
