Quick question about the underworld factions: How would they interact/relate to the Imps and rebs? You would think they might be concerned with various criminal factions having turf wars on their planets.

Yeah. I could see the Rebels enlisting the aid of some Seuggelrs Alliance people, or a BH from the Guild. I could also see the Imperials allying themselves with the law enforcement personell, and cracking down on criminal elements. Ect....

Also allow players to join one civil war faction(Rebel or Imperial) and one non-civil war faction(police force or criminal). The reason being that the Empire was known to hire unsavory characters(Boba Fett, anyone?) as well as working with local law enforcement(more as puppets, but still). And for the Rebellion, many of thier members were criminals one way or another; the Empire viewed them as criminals & traitors, and some members were wanted for a number of reasons(Han Solo).

I like this kinda idea. If we were to allow the Empire and Rebellion to also give missions to players who are aligned to either the criminal or authority factions, I think this would be cool.

The two wars, being the civil war and the criminal/cop war, would not have to be separate entities.

For example, the Empire could hire some local authorities to ferret out some local Rebels who they claim are wanted under criminal reasons. They could also hire criminals to hit a local Rebel facility.

The Rebellion could seek the help of local authorities to hide them from the Empire. Likewise with with asking for help from criminal players who know safe places to hide.

I like the turn of the recent discussion--to have a truly deep and interesting underworld, it's going to need to have a place for non-smugglers as well. If we want something more than a theme park and a couple delivery missions, the best way to go about it is to include roles for as many other types of players as possible, be it vague (hired muscle open to anyone who wants the job) or specific (a new type of patrol droid for DEs). Ideally, it would be a system that supplies some of the general populace's need for content while ensuring the smugglers a special role in the process.

I'll try to come up with something more concrete later, but think of it this way: the wider underworld is the room, and us smugglers are the rug that ties that room together.

Yea, Tomo. Check out the ideas here for players to join local law enforcement or criminal factions.

I think there is alot of content there that could be added no doubt.

Mmm what about using already existing "cop" factions? Like, for example, a Correlian native joining CorSec? But the problem is that thoses only have influence on their own system.

I like the idea of robbery, and of the potential for the "victim" to attack the thief if caught. Maybe then gain a TEF with the local security? Like, the victim yelling "THIEF!" hehe

Yea, that's the idea. Convert local authorities into a faction

Some ideas that I feel would enhance and improve the 'underworld' feeling
of Star Wars Galaxies.

  1. Players able to create their own criminal syndicates, as player run
sub-factions that could compete with established criminal factions or ones
    created by other players.
  2. New profession that can more directly influence the criminal world.
Smugglers are great but they are not really thieves or a number of other
things that involve criminal activities. We need a more generic criminal
profession capable of doing the things a smuggler can not or *should* not.
  3. Various NPC criminal factions having 'events' that decide a form of
criminal dominance that can have an affect on the players day to day
    activities.
  4. A strict risk/reward system when a player gets involved with criminal
factions by eitherassisting or affiliating themselves with that
society.Faction perks, mission rewards, the works.
  5. Player bounties of law-breaking individuals.
  6. The capability to work for an NPC criminal faction if the player does not
wish to pursue joining a player run criminal faction. With missions, perks and
    rewards all of their own.
  7. Have many missions operate in a theme-park fashion with many of the actual
    mission areas in instanced locations.
  8. ...

I'll probably mention things later. Tried to get to
ten but it's been busy here

Hell Wilbur, I think any faction would work. The thing is that once a player is aligned with an authority or criminal faction, they are confined to do the work of that faction only on the particular planets where that organization has influence. This might actually breathe life into NPC cities as well.

A criminal who works for the Hutts will have to pick his prey in cities on Tatooine. The Tatooine militia, or who ever tries to counter the Hutts, would only have thier abilities to scan on players on Tatooine as well.

You could also have a message run across a player policeman's screen that says, "A robbery has occured in Bestine". If this player cop successfully finds the criminal player through asking the victim or by what other players witnessed, and conducts a contraband on the correct criminal player, then they could recieve a TEF on the criminal, a special reward, or a payout.

You could also grant a criminal player say... 100 faction points every robbery they do. After, say, 5 consecutive successful robberies the criminal is placed on the BH terminals, because the police couldn't take care of the problem. If the criminal is killed by the BH, they loose 800 faction points of the crime faction they work for. If a criminal is killed by a player cop who detects them on their beat, the criminal looses 200 faction for being caught for a robbery.

Wow, some cool ideas emerging!!!

I like that. But, thinking in the Star Wars universe, some factions have galaxy-wide influence, especially the Hutts and Black Sun, along with the Smuggler's Alliance.

First, we have Rebel vs. Imperial.

Now we've got the Criminal Factions vs Law enforcement.

Yea, just give those players who align themselves with one of these factions their powers on all the planets their factionoccupies.

Like zones of control? (More like "turf" of control).

This is getting good....

I think I'll just write up a big doc on this.

Well I'm not sure I like the turf control idea. It could be cool, but how are you going to have criminals robbing and authorities scanning in the same area if there are only certain areas they can do it in? Well, maybe that is not what you meant.

Zones of control would be really awesome if depending on how many successful robberies or crackdowns happen in an area determines it's crime/cop alignment. Areas that fall under police control would have tough NPC's stationed at random points in their turf, as well as the NPC cities in that region as well. Criminal areas would have tough thugs placed there too!

Oh yea, allow robberies and crackdowns (scans) to occur at any location in the planets that the faction is associated with (Hutts = Tatooine for example). The number of successful robberies or crackdowns in an area determines which faction "controls" it.
