According to Wes although its good this idea has been mentioned before by others, including me, I think its a great idea to be able to modify a weapon's stats directly (like experimentation).
Here's a link to my variation of the same idea and the actual post for your viewing pleasure.
If we can discuss this futher and fine tune it we can probably keep pushing for it until it happens?
Or maybe I'm too optimistic? hehe, I'm relatively still new here
Here's my post for your viewing pleasure:

Smuggler Concepts: Slicing/Modifying
Slicing: A definition
Slicing in the Star Wars world consists of hacking into a computer
system/network and gain or alter information. Thus making Slicing a
synonym to Hacking in our world. It involves activities such as slicing
through encrypted codes, data disks, computers, droid programs etc.

Nothing in the Star Wars EU mentions the ability to slice weapons and armor.
Weapons are not a computer system. But they can be modified. The ability to
modify weapons and armor should be a skill in itself. But it is not slicing.

More about my slicing/Crypting ideas in a later post.
Proposal for Skill tree: Modifying Weapons and Armor
(Tree name suggestions welcomed)

The ability to modify weapons and armor should be a smuggler only ability.
I consider the smuggler to be something of a rogue in terms of fantasy games.
One who delves in illegal activities, underworld, organized crime,
raketeering, gambling etc.

Weapon Modification Process: Concept
- A player that wants his weapon modified will contact a smuggler.
- The two parties will then form a group.
- The smuggler will start a Modifying session based on the item (Weapon or Armor).
- A screen will appear on both player's interfaces, like that of the Image Designer
- The screen shows the current item's picture and its current stats
- Below the stats it will have sliders like the experimentation screens that crafters get.
- Based on the mod skill of the smuggler they will be able to alter these values
- These alterations will be based on a point system like that of artisan experimentation
- At this point there are 2 options and this should be discussed further:

NOTE: This process does not require the transfer of the item, smugglers may be
the most trusted profession but it would give us much more business if customers felt safe
with the mod process (even if its illegal)

1) Modify the sliders X amount of times depending on your skill level?
2) The option to add points to the overall mod process thus enhancing the item further?
3) Both options as you level up the mod tree?

Items that can be modified in the world: Rules
An item has to have some sort of mechanical component, no blunt or edged weapons
Vibro motor based weapons and hammers can be modified in this manner but not for range or speed (Only damage)
Armor that has mechanical qualities like composite
Anything with a vibro motor or machanical firing mechanism
Vehicles can be modified for speed and durability
Crafted starship components (Not loot)
- Since crafted components cannot be reverse engineered it would be a good idea to be able to mod them

BTW, a secure interface do not create lag anymore than the normal trade window do, it is basically a trade window with a few more stuff on it.
Interesting, darf13

It is a measure put in place to protect our clients from our bad apples, not to protect us from bad clients, but it is a start. You have a point, it show at least an awareness of the problem. Maybe it will be better solved as part of our revamp, like I think happened to IDs.
